The One Thing You'll Never See Anna Wintour Wear

Rules are meant to be broken, especially when it comes to fashion. At some point, we all have to stop listening to the invisible little demon dancing on our shoulders, screaming to us that we can't wear gold and silver jewelry at the same time or mix patterns to the point we're looking like our grandmother's living room. It's too difficult to live inside a box our entire life! This rings especially true for those in Hollywood, as all eyes are on them to jumpstart the next biggest fashion fad. While time has passed, we all can still perfectly recall Lady Gaga's meat dress from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and the all-denim look worn by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, via Yardbarker. Experimentation with fashion can pay off, and it's often worth trying things you might usually shy away from.

That is, unless you're Dame Anna Wintour, British-American fashion icon and the rumored inspiration behind Miranda Priestly in "The Devil Wears Prada." The editor-in-chief of Vogue and Artistic Director of Condé Nast has made it clear over the years that there's one item she refuses to wear even in the direst of circumstances.

So, what does the woman who directs the tides of fashion despise? And what's the reasoning behind her disdain? Read to find out more!

Anna Wintour will never wear an all-black outfit

We often refer to the color black as a symbol of the elegance and sophistication of the modern career woman, but that couldn't be further from the case for Anna Wintour. In a 2019 episode of "Go Ask Anna" for Vogue, where the editor-in-chief answers burning fashion questions from curious pedestrians, Wintour dished out her distaste for the tones for black when asked how she would "spice up an all-black outfit."

"Just don't wear all black. It seems too gloomy and as if one's going to a funeral. So I would definitely think about adding some color or a favorite piece of jewelry or maybe white boots. Just something that's a little bit unexpected," the London native suggested. However, it doesn't seem that Wintour has always hated the color black, as Who What Wear did dig up an all-black fit she rocked in her younger years that featured black shoes and flowy pants with eyelet detailing, paired perfectly with a gold watch and an indigo clutch.

So, is there anything that has stayed in Wintour's closet throughout the years?

Anna Wintour will never take off her signature sunglasses

If you search for images of Anna Wintour, you'll rarely find a snapshot of her without her iconic, oversized black sunglasses, wich frequently cover more than half of her face. During an interview with CNN in 2019, Wintour revealed that her signature sunnies are her forever fav "because you avoid people knowing what you're thinking about." Besides helping her hide her emotions, Wintour's sunglasses also serve as an item of comforting familiarity "And maybe they've just become a crutch in part of who I am," the journalist admitted.

In a similar vein to her sunglasses being a core tenet of her personality, Wintour seems to be a big fan of having your clothes speak for who you are. In another episode of "Go Ask Anna," the Vogue editor discussed the range of outfits she sees at job interviews for her magazine. "Sometimes you feel they're wearing clothes that they just bought that morning, or maybe the night before, and not something that in any way suits their personality and who they are," Wintour stated. "And I think what everybody should remember, whether they're interviewing at Vogue or, indeed, anywhere, [is] that we're not hiring your wardrobe. Your wardrobe is not going to be doing the job for you — it's who you are."
