The Real Reason Cher Always Wears Wigs

Many refer to superstar Cher as the "Goddess of Pop" and we can totally see why. With a career spanning more than six decades, she's an all-around entertainer who's greatly admired by millions across the globe.

After establishing herself as part of the singing duo Sonny & Cher, the "Just Like Jesse James" hitmaker went solo and became a pop icon. As of this writing, Cher has released an impressive 26 studio albums since 1965. According to Billboard, six of her LPs have entered the top 10 of the US Billboard 100. In 1998, Cher released one of her biggest singles to date, "Believe," which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Billboard noted that the song is one of four of her singles to reach the No. 1 spot on the US Hot 100. Aside from music, Cher has also established herself as an award-winning actor, starring in a number of big-screen movies — "Mask," "Mermaids," and "The Witches of Eastwick," to name a few. For her 1987 role as Loretta Castorini in "Moonstruck," she took home an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Throughout Cher's long and successful career, she has transformed and reinvented her image. One thing fans have always recognized is her ever-changing hairstyles — thanks to the magic of wigs, of course. Keep reading to find out why Cher chooses wigs over showing off her natural locks.

Cher says wigs are 'low maintenance'

Gwen Stefani's staple is red lipstick, while Ariana Grande's is her high ponytail. When it comes down to Cher's signature look, it has to be her iconic range of wigs. As noted by CheatSheet, the "Strong Enough" chart-topper is rarely seen without one on and very few fans have never seen her natural locks. According to The Sun, with there are so many to choose from, that Cher demands to have a room just for wigs and accessories while on tour. Sounds fair enough to us!

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Cher described her real hair as "long and brunette" while explaining why she chooses wigs over displaying what's underneath. "There's nothing wrong with my hair, but I love wigs, and always have. They are so low maintenance. It just makes it easier to change my image," Cher stated.

During her "Living Proof" era, the living legend sported long blonde locks, which some assumed wasn't a wig. When questioned at an event whether dying her hair was any hassle, she expressed why it wasn't. "It's no trouble at all being blonde because it's not my real hair, it's a wig. It's made from real human hair, and feels just like the real thing," Cher said, per CheatSheet.

Cher doesn't just wear wigs when making public appearances

It goes without saying that Cher is one of entertainment's most glam stars. Whether she's on the red carpet, on stage, or even getting papped, she's always dolled-up, looking as flawless as ever. As seen in paparazzi photos shared on the Daily Mail in July, Cher rocked a long, straight black wig with a pair of shades while walking the streets of Italy. She cemented her status as a style icon and wore a purple sequined top with a black jacket and leggings of the same color.

In a 2019 interview with Vogue, the "If I Could Turn Back Time" hitmaker told the fashion magazine that she doesn't care what others might have to say about her appearance. "I've always taken risks and never worried what the world might really think of me," she said, adding, "Until you're ready to look foolish, you'll never have the possibility of being great."

While making an appearance on "The Graham Norton Show" in 2013, Graham Norton referred to Cher as "Classic Cher" as she was wearing a dark black wig in a red tartan outfit. With so many legendary looks, the chat show host questioned whether the music superstar decides "which Cher you'll be" on any given day. After jokingly asking whether Norton was out of his mind, Cher explained all of her ensembles are different versions of herself.
