The True Meaning Behind Can I Get It By Adele

On October 1, strange projections that simply read "30" started appearing around the world on famous landmarks like the Louvre and the Empire State Building, per Pitchfork. Fans speculated that it was a hint at the release of Adele's new album. It had been six years since the release of her smash third album "25," and with the state of the world, many could use a little more Adele.

Not to mention the anticipation over wild sales and streaming numbers. It took less than a year for "25" to become diamond certified — over 10 million units sold — by the RIAA, Billboard recapped. For critical recognition, Adele cleaned up at the 59th Grammy Awards and won Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. For her soaring song "Hello," she took home Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance — the first artist ever to sweep the three major awards twice.

In her personal life, Adele had a son, got married, and then three years after the release of "25," went through a divorce. That meant "30" would be filled with emotion, and she delivered with her first single "Easy on Me." When she dropped the album, one highlight was the up-tempo "Can I Get It," and the lyrics give a glimpse as to what this superstar went through after a breakup.

Adele's Can I Get It is a song about moving on

Following her separation from husband Simon Konecki, Adele was understandably upset. Though the split was amicable, according to The New York Times, the singer then went through an emotional rollercoaster. "I just didn't like who I was," Adele revealed to Rolling Stone about what motivated the split.

But she vowed to look again for love and jumped into the dating scene. Adele was a little rusty because she and Konecki had been together since 2011. Plus, it was complicated for the superstar to find the right person. "I lasted five seconds," she said about dating in Los Angeles. According to the singer, the city didn't work for her because "everyone is someone or everyone wants to be someone." She added, "I've been so lucky that no one I've been with has ever sold a story on me. I feel like that could really be a possibility."

After her attempt at dating, Adele penned the track "Can I Get It," which is about looking for real love in a sea of so many others looking for casual hookups. The lyrics imagine Adele talking to her ideal love, who she wants to go "Through it all, the good, the bad, the ugly, and divine / I will be the melody, the rhythm, and your rhyme / All I want is for you to be mine, mine," per Genius. Adele is a woman who knows what she wants!

Adele tapped into a little thing called hope

To give the song "Can I Get It" life, Adele worked with Max Martin and Shellback, The New York Times reported. The Swedish pop duo worked with Adele previously on her song "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" from the album "25," per Pitchfork. Adele placed "Can I Get It" mid-album as a lively song to put a break in between her slower, more classical songs. The pace reflects the lyrical content, too, as Adele explores the wild world of dating. Plus, according to Rolling Stone, the order of the tracks on "30" mostly follows a chronological order of real-life events for Adele.

The upbeat tune mirror Adele's desire for a real connection amid all the fakery, as Adele reflects on her previous relationship in hopes that her next one will be everlasting. She sings to her ideal partner, "I'm counting on you / to put the pieces of me back together." Ultimately, "Can I Get It" is a song about hope. And Adele makes it clear she doesn't want to be hoping for too long, asking, "can I get it right now?"

The good news is Adele seems to have found her person in Rich Paul (pictured above), a sports agent, who she told British Vogue just "incredibly arrived" in her life.
