The Real Meaning Of On My Way By Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez has had a decades-spanning career, from being a household name as a singer to starring in various films like "Maid in Manhattan" and "Hustlers." Lopez doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon, as she is promoting her latest upcoming rom-com role alongside Owen Wilson in "Marry Me." The movie's premise may even mirror Lopez's own relationship with ex-fiance Alex Rodriguez, as she plays a pop singer who catches her boyfriend — played by fellow musician Maluma — cheating just before a public proposal. Although Lopez and Maluma were never romantically involved in real life, both play global sensations (just like in their own lives).
In honor of her role in "Marry Me," Lopez recorded a special song for the movie's soundtrack called "On My Way" — which she performed live at the American Music Awards. The song itself starts out as a piano ballad, before Lopez belts the lyrics. And there may be more to the song than meets the eye.
Is Jennifer Lopez's On My Way about Ben Affleck?
Prior to the announcement of her new rom-com, Jennifer Lopez discussed how she is in a completely different (and better) space mentally in an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music. No doubt her happiness has to do in part with her rekindled relationship her early-2000s ex, Ben Affleck. While he doesn't star alongside Lopez in "Marry Me," he could be contributing to her change of mind.
As JLo sings on "On My Way," "And every heartbreak was a yellow brick road / Pointing me straight, just taking me home / I was never lost, I was just passing through / I was on my way to you." Of course, that invokes some "Wizard of Oz" imagery — and is most likely about her character's relationship with Owen Wilson in the film — but it could also apply to her reconciliation with Affleck. "And you don't believe in meant-to-be," she croons, "But somehow you were meant for me, it's true / Yeah, you were on your way too."
In the Apple Music discussion, Lopez divulged, "I'm super happy. ... I've never been better," she revealed. " ... I've really gotten to a place in my life where I'm great on my own. I think once you get to that place, then amazing things happen. Things that you never imagined in your life happening again." A hint about Affleck?
Lopez also spoke to "Today" in preparation for the film's release, revealing her thoughts on marriage in the future. "I still believe in happily ever after, for sure, 100%," she said.
Jennifer Lopez spills the details about the Marry Me soundtrack
Prior to Jennifer Lopez's official release of her new song "On My Way" in November, the multi-talented musician and actor had been teasing it for quite a while. Although it seems like a long time to wait — "Marry Me" comes out in February 2022 — both the movie and Lopez's soundtrack for it have been even longer.
Back in February 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the world, Lopez appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." On the show, per Billboard, she revealed the status of the movie, along with the soundtrack and Fallon's personal part in it. While "Marry Me" and "On My Way" didn't have release dates at the time, it's likely to have been sooner, had the pandemic not hit a month later.
"I did an album with this movie, so there are all new songs, new music with it, so it's exciting. I have six to eight songs, and Maluma does two or three," Lopez shared. We can't wait to hear the full thing — and see the movie!
