The Parenting Advice Mandy Moore Received From Justin Hartley

Mandy Moore became a mother in February 2021, when she and her husband Taylor Goldsmith welcomed their son August Harrison — whom they call Gus — as she announced on Instagram. After the new year, the "This is Us" star took to Instagram to celebrate the "strange but overwhelmingly magical" year that 2021 was, owing the latter to the birth of her only child. Moore told Romper in January 2021 that she had been struggling to conceive for some time.

In summer 2020, Moore saw a specialist who detected an issue, potentially caused by endometriosis. "I was fully prepared to go have surgery and fix my uterus and hopefully get rid of the endometriosis, if it was there," she said. Shortly before the procedure, however, Moore discovered she was pregnant. But Moore and Goldsmith continued to be apprehensive. "Because of this issue with my uterus, I was very hesitant to believe it and put any stock in it," she added. "I sort of was holding my breath until 12 weeks."

Luckily, the pregnancy went smoothly, and Moore gave birth to a healthy baby boy. As she prepared to give birth, though, she received some pretty solid advice from her "This Is Us" co-star Justin Hartley.

Justin Hartley told Mandy Moore to enjoy those ZZZs

Just a few weeks before Mandy Moore gave birth to Gus, her co-star Justin Hartley shared a piece of parenting advice that most moms and dads will vouch for during an appearance on "The Kelly Clarkson Show." Hartley, who shares a daughter with ex-wife and former "Passions" co-star Lindsay Korman, said, "Get your sleep now. When the babies come, you're not gonna sleep much. And when you do sleep, it's not gonna be the same quality of sleep."

In addition to the tip, Hartley also praised Moore's form during those last difficult months. "You would never know she was pregnant. She looks like she could run a marathon," he added. Despite remaining in great shape, Moore was unable to fully apply Hartley's wise advice — just a month before giving birth, she told Romper she found herself "waking up at 3 a.m. for no good reason."

Her first trimester was no walk in the park, either. On top of worrying about losing her pregnancy amid her uterine issues, Moore also suffered from "major food aversions," which kept her from enjoying one of her favorite beverages, she said in an Instagram Story (via Romper). She wasn't overly concerned about it, though. "I'm fully accepting that my love for coffee will come back. And if not, it's all good. Small price to pay," she told her followers at the time.

Justin Hartley also supports Mandy Moore's husband

Not only does Justin Hartley dole out parenting advice to Mandy Moore, but he also supports his pal's marriage. Moore celebrated her engagement to Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith with a lavish party in September 2017, according to Entertainment Tonight. By that point, the cast of "This Is Us" was already super tight, so Moore's engagement was a family affair, so to speak. "We found out via our group text chain that we are constantly on, the whole cast," Justin Hartley told Elle that same month. And the response was overwhelmingly positive. "Taylor's an amazing guy. He found a wonderful woman," Hartley gushed. "They're like-minded. They're two of the nicest humans and smartest people I've ever met. They're going to be great together."

Milo Ventimiglia, who plays Moore's husband on the show, joked on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in September 2017 that he expected Goldsmith to ask for his blessing. "I didn't get asked for her hand in marriage, like (as her) TV husband," he quipped, drawing laughs from Moore and Sterling K. Brown, who plays Ventimiglia and Moore's son. Jokes aside, Ventimiglia shares Hartley's opinion of Goldsmith. "Taylor is the kindest soul, as is Mandy — she's like the most beautiful of human beings. So the two of them coming together, it's right and it's good," Ventimiglia said.

Moore and Goldsmith met in mid-2015, shortly after Moore filed for divorce from Ryan Adams. "You met me at such a broken time and never skipped a beat," she wrote on Instagram to celebrate their three-year wedding anniversary in November 2021.
