James Corden Says Cher Gave Him The Best Life Advice

As a world-renowned pop icon, she's one of the few singers who's known by a single name. It's no secret the Goddess of Pop and "Believe" singer, Cher, is one of the world's best-selling musical artists, having sold over 100 million records and having an estimated net worth of $360 million. She began performing as a duo with Sonny Bono in the '60s which spanned the iconic and influential "Sonny & Cher"-era, becoming famous for her sultry voice. The two were known for the song "I Got You Babe" and "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour," according to Biography, and they were married from 1969 to 1975.

The Emmy-award winning actor and "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" star has since been described as embodying female autonomy in a male-dominated industry. Today, she is recognized as the poster girl for cosmetic surgery and her voice is better than it's ever been (per The Guardian). "I've worked my whole life to keep my strength in my body. There are 20-year-old girls who can't do what I do." Celebrities look to her as a role model and describe her as the epitome of flawless beauty and aging. Even celebrity comedian and host James Corden says Cher helped him find "tranquility," per HuffPost.

Cher's advice about love and fear changed James Corden's life

Cher has captured hearts around the world with a career spanning multiple decades and she's widely regarded as a cultural icon. It's a good thing the Emmy award-winning actor isn't shy about sharing some of her wisdom on social media, adding to her Twitter bio her now-famous advice from a 2018 interview with talk show host Graham Norton, where Cher spoke of a tip she received from her mother: "If it doesn't matter in five years, it doesn't matter." James Corden, one of the most well-known personalities in late night television and host of "The Late Late Show" on CBS says Cher's advice has changed the way he thinks about life and stressful situations (via HuffPost).

After actor Melissa McCarthy shared some advice she had written to her future self as a teenager on Corden's CBS show in September 2021, she and her "Nine Perfect Strangers" co-star Nicole Kidman asked him to contribute his own. Corden's newest advice: "If in doubt, just ask — what would Cher do?"

"She's got this great thing where she says, if you're in a spin or really angry and stressed about something, ask yourself: Does this matter in a year's time? And if it doesn't matter in a year, it doesn't matter. And if you think it will matter in a year, then it matters," he recounted. As Corden added, Cher's advice encourages one to assess what's truly important and focus on those things that matter most.

Who does the 'Goddess of Pop' turn to for advice?

The "If I Could Turn Back Time" singer has won three Billboard Awards, including the ICON Award in 2017, and she has credited her success and good headspace to her mother (via People). "I want to thank my mom because when I was really young, my mom said, 'You're not gonna be the smartest, you're not gonna be the prettiest, you're not gonna be the most talented, but you're gonna be special.' I've had so much help," Cher explained during her acceptance speech. "I just have to say that I think that luck has so much to do with my success — I think it was mostly luck and a little bit of something thrown in."

Cher's mom, nonagenarian Georgia Holt, knows a thing or two about love and success from her own six marriages and pursuits in the entertainment industry, (per Yahoo! Entertainment). Holt, who was abandoned by her own mom, left for Hollywood at a young age and gained experience as an actor by appearing on "I Love Lucy" and "Ozzie and Harriet." After giving birth to Cher at the age of 19, Holt mostly stayed out of the limelight and has focused on supporting her daughter — although she has taken the opportunity to show off her musical talents (like mother, like daughter!) and released her own album nearly a decade ago titled, "Honky Tonk Woman" (per Country Music Family).
