Inside Patrick Mahomes And Brittany Matthews' Relationship

Very few athletes make it to the NFL, and even fewer do it with the same partner by their side throughout the whole ride. But that's the story of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his longtime girlfriend-turned-wife Brittany Matthews. Before the glamorous life of Super Bowl rings and foreign cars, the two were up-and-coming student athletes in Whitefield, Texas. Scrolling back to their earliest Instagram posts, the couple look like any other "it" couple from your high school (you know the one), but fast forward almost nine years, and Mahomes and Matthews are NFL royalty with a combined total of nearly 6 million Instagram followers. That's not counting the fans that follow their dogs, but more on that later.

But of course, being in the public eye also comes with skeptics, trolls, and haters, and this power couple could tell you that firsthand. Matthews has been the center of a few controversies along the way, while some fans credit her for always supporting her man. Love them or hate them, Mahomes and Matthews are in Kansas City to stay for at least the next 12 years, thanks to Mahomes' history-making NFL contract. Let's dive into the details of this couple's relationship.

The couple were high school sweethearts

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews started out as friends at Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. When he was a sophomore and she was a junior, Mahomes gave her a card and rose on Valentine's Day, taking their relationship to the next level. Their seemingly normal beginnings are apparent if you scroll back to 2013 on Mahomes' Instagram account. There's typical high school posts of the two before fame, on casual dinner dates and collages wishing Matthews a happy 18th, then 21st birthday.

"Love her and hope her 18th is the best!" Mahomes wrote on Instagram in 2013. That same year, Matthews shared a picture of a cookie cake Mahomes used to ask her to his senior formal dance. "Cute and simple," she captioned the photo.

The future football star also shared pictures on his account of the couple all dressed up. "Best prom date a guy could ask for!!" Mahomes captioned another photo in 2013.

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews are both athletes

Patrick Mahomes is known as the NFL's highest paid player, but his wife, Brittany Matthews, is an athlete in her own right. After graduating high school in 2013, she played college soccer at University of Texas at Tyler. The school was close to home, so she was still able to cheer on Mahomes during his senior high school sports career. He went on to play football at Texas Tech, and the two had a long-distance relationship while they both worked to further their careers.

The distance grew more in 2017 once Matthews graduated and went to Iceland to play professional soccer with UMF Afturelding/Fram. This was the same year Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, and life for the couple would change forever.

Once Matthews' team won the league, she returned to the United States to be with Mahomes in Kansas City. Matthews became a certified personal trainer and launched her own fitness and fashion website called Brittany Lynne Fitness. She also co-owns KC Current, Kansas City's professional women's soccer club.

Her social media posts have sparked controversy

Being in a relationship with someone like Patrick Mahomes comes with fans — and critics — of everyone around him. Brittany Matthews was very active on Twitter during Super Bowl LV, expressing her anger with referee calls against her then-fiancé's team. "That was bull," she tweeted, with a poop emoji as punctuation. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl 31-9, and after Kansas City's loss, ESPN posted an uncaptioned picture of Mahomes with a blank look on his face during the game. Matthews didn't like that, either, using emojis to call it "corny."

Matthews faced backlash again in 2022 when she popped and poured champagne over Kansas City fans. Some social media users were quick to shame her for pouring cold liquid on freezing fans, while others said she simply celebrated the Chiefs moving on to the AFC finals. "I just wish I could do what I want without getting attacked every week," she tweeted after comments starting rolling in.

A week later, Charlie Hustle Clothing Co. and the mental health organization Red Cars teamed up to sell "Team Brittany" t-shirts. Matthews said she would match the proceeds from the shirts and donate it to a campaign to end bullying.

Both Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews got a ring at Super Bowl LIV

Patrick Mahomes continued his Super Bowl LIV winning celebration by proposing to Brittany Matthews three days later. Nearly nine years into their relationship, the two returned to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to get his championship ring when he led his future Mrs. into a skybox decorated with flowers, candles, and light-up letters that read, "Will You Marry Me." Two of Matthews' friends and Mahomes' brother were there to capture behind-the-scenes snaps for the couple's social media followers. The following day, they shared the news on Instagram.

"On a day that was meant to celebrate you, you turned it into celebrating us," Matthews wrote, in part. "It's always us, it's always you and me. Mahomes simply captioned his post "#RingSZN." Brilliant Earth's Kathryn Money told Page Six that Matthews' ring appears to be an estimated 8 to 10 carats. Ajay Anand, founder of Rare Carat, agreed, and estimated the sparkler to cost around $500,000.

The pair love their dogs

Patrick Mahomes told Woof Republic that he was scared of dogs "until I was in high school. Then I went straight to a pit bull." That indeed he did in 2016 when he gave Brittany Matthews a furry friend named Steel for Valentine's Day. The two have been obsessed with the pupper ever since.

"I hate how they [pit bulls] get stereotyped as aggressive. Any dog can be aggressive, it's basically the way they're raised. This is the sweetest pup ever," Mahomes told Woof Republic.

The couple also adopted a cane corso named Silver in 2019. Matthews even created an Instagram account for the dogs that has over 213,000 followers. The pups are often photographed sporting Kansas City Chiefs gear in support of their dad. But they're not just Instagram models. The dogs are also part of life events, like the couple's baby gender reveal party

They had to sleep in separate rooms due to COVID concerns

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews spent some time apart while Matthews was pregnant with their first child as a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19. After the Kansas City Chiefs beat the New England Patriots on October 2, 2020, Mahomes high-fived New England Patriots defensive end Stephon Gilmore, who later tested positive for the virus.

"Obviously, knowing that I went up to him after the game and just gave him a high five like I've done my whole career and not thinking about it was a little bit of a mental lapse," Mahomes said at a press conference after learning about Gilmore's positive test.

The quarterback and dad-to-be said he returned to his home the following weekend but avoided Matthews as much as possible by sleeping in a different bedroom. "Like I said, obviously with Brittany being pregnant, I try to do whatever I can to social distance and stay away, even be available to the team, but even more ...  just kind of stay and keep my family safe," he said. The precautions seemly worked as neither Mahomes nor Matthews tested positive for COVID-19.

They're set thanks to Patrick Mahomes' NFL contract

In July 2020, Patrick Mahomes became the highest paid NFL player when he signed a 10-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs worth $503 million. That gave the quarterback more than enough wiggle room to spend some serious cash on, frankly, whatever he wanted. Mahomes was 25 years old at the time and bought Brittany Matthews a Lamborghini for a reported $230,000. "Nothing like waking up at 8am to a new car on Monday," Matthews wrote in an Instagram story.

Instead of any reckless purchases, Mahomes invested in his family's future by buying a plot of land in Kansas City. "I figured my contract has a couple of years on there so I will be here for a little bit," he said in an interview with Dan Patrick. Mahomes said he plans to build a house on that land with amenities such as a half-football field, basketball court, and golf putting greens. The money undoubtedly came in handy for their wedding in 2022.

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews' had a daughter in 2021

In September 2020, Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews announced that they were expecting their first child together. "Mom & Dad, taking a small detour to the wedding," Matthews captioned the Instagram post of the two holding a sonogram. Matthews continued to stay on brand with Brittany Lynne Fitness during the pregnancy by regularly posting workout videos with her baby bump. She and Mahomes also shared their pictures from an extravagant pregnancy photoshoot in which Matthews posed in a few ruffly gowns. The images were criticized by some social media users who claimed the former soccer star's body didn't look the best in the gowns. "Well ladies, not trying to look 'skinny' in my maternity pics, I'm very pregnant and not here to try and make myself not look pregnant," she said on her Instagram story, via Daily Mail.

Regardless of public perception, the couple were overjoyed when Sterling Skye Mahomes was born on February 20, 2021. The duo broke the news on, you guessed it, Instagram with a picture of Matthews wearing a necklace of her daughter's name and holding the newborn's hand. Sterling quickly became a Kansas City Chiefs fan and appears regularly on both her parents' social media feeds.

Why they decided to stop trying to hide their daughter

For an almost four-month span after Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews welcomed Sterling Skye Mahomes to the world, Matthews only shared a handful of photos of the little girl on Instagram. In all of them, her face was turned away from the camera. There was a picture of Sterling's proud papa holding her in his arms and gazing at her adoringly, a family photo snapped at a Kansas City Royals game, and a few precious Mother's Day pics. Matthews finally gave her followers their first look at her daughter's face when she shared two snapshots of the entire fam all decked out in Adidas gear. "Hi, my name is Sterling," she captioned the carousel.

In an interview with Today, Mahomes explained that Sterling played such a long game of peek-a-boo with the public because he and Matthews simply wanted to protect their family's privacy. When the game grew tiring, they decided it was time to let their little social media star shine — they even shared a photo of "Ster" dressed like a star for Halloween. "It almost became like a burden to try to hide her at all times when we do stuff," Mahomes said. The parents also wanted to start bringing Sterling to Mahomes' NFL games, and their little cheerleader was on the sidelines celebrating with them after the Chiefs' 2023 AFC victory stamped Mahomes' ticket to his third Super Bowl.

Their wedding was an island escape

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews treated their guests to a mini vacay when they became man and wife in March 2022. The couple got married in Maui, where a few recognizable faces joined them to soak up some sun and celebrate their union. Per TMZ, members of their wedding party included Jackson Mahomes, who had the honor of being his big bro's best man, and Patrick's Kansas City Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce, who served as one of his groomsmen.

In a post on her Instagram Story (via People), Matthews explained that she and Patrick chose to have their destination wedding in Maui because the island was the location of their first romantic getaway as a couple. "The weather and views are just perfection there! I wanted somewhere where people couldn't just pull up to lol," she added.

Matthews' gown was a Versace design with cutouts on the bodice, silver sequin trim, and a dramatic, oversize bow detail on the back with layers of fabric folds cascading down beneath it. In Instagram photos, her long veil was pictured blowing in a sea breeze as she and Mahomes kissed in front of beach backdrop. In another post, Matthews revealed that her daughter was the coolest flower girl ever: Sterling cruised past their wedding guests in a baby Bentley convertible. She even had crackers to munch on in lieu of petals to toss while she fulfilled her duties without putting in any legwork.

Brittany Matthews got pregnant again soon after getting hitched

While fielding questions from her Instagram followers during an April 2022 Q&A, Brittany Matthews seemed taken aback by the number of fans who were asking her about a potential second pregnancy; after all, she'd only been married a month by then. "Ok, y'all really out here wanting us to have another baby," she wrote (via E!). "We don't exactly know yet! Y'all need to calm down." But despite her indecisiveness at the time, she found herself making a pregnancy announcement on Instagram just one month later.

"Round 2!" Matthews captioned a family photo of herself, Patrick Mahomes, and their daughter Sterling, who frowned while gripping a sign that read, "Big sister duties coming soon." Speaking to USA Today Sports about the happy news, Mahomes said, "Hopefully we get a boy, but I'll love him or her either way. It's going to be awesome."

Mahomes ended up getting his wish. Matthews shared some footage of their gender reveal party on Instagram, which began with shots of a number of their guests guessing that she had a son-bun in the oven. She and Mahomes learned the sex of their second child by squirting water guns filled with blue liquid at a sign reading, "Baby Mahomes: Boy or Girl???" Upon seeing blue splatter appear all over the words, an overjoyed Mahomes celebrated by leaping into a pool fully clothed.

Their son made the family podium with his unique name

Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews are fond of metallic monikers. After the idea of naming one of their dogs Sterling came up, Matthews explained why the pup had to settle for the similar name Silver instead. "I said no, when I have a daughter one day I want that to be her name," she wrote on her Instagram Story (via Today). "So now we have Steel, Silver and Sterling."

When Patrick and Matthews took to Instagram to announce the arrival of their son, their fans learned that the couple had put an end to their alliterative naming trend. "Patrick 'Bronze' Lavon Mahomes III," they captioned a photo of their baby boy's legs and his first piece of a bling: A jewel-encrusted "Bronze" nameplate necklace. While explaining the name choice, Patrick said, "I've always wanted to do Patrick Lavon Mahomes III. I've thought about that since I was literally like five or six years old," per FanNation. However, he also wanted his son and daughter's names to share some sort of meaningful connection. Patrick's brother, Jackson Mahomes, offered his input by suggesting the nickname inspired by a metal that's often associated with sports. "Whenever we were trying to find something that was a little unique and different, he said, 'What about Bronze? It fits perfectly with Sterling,'" Patrick recalled. "We went with that, and I think it works out well."

Patrick Mahones doesn't want to be a pushy sports parent

Athleticism is in Patrick 'Bronze' Lavon Mahomes III and Sterling Skye Mahomes' blood. In addition to having two parents who are athletes, Bronze and Sterling have a talented grandad who played a professional sport. However, Pat Mahomes Sr. was an MLB pitcher, and he told TMZ that he once wanted Patrick to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a career in baseball like him. He was also fine with his son taking a shot at playing basketball professionally, but he attempted to dissuade Patrick from trying to go pro in the NFL. "I said, 'We're just wasting time with this football thing,'" Pat recalled.

When it comes to his kids, it doesn't seem as though Patrick plans on trying to influence their decisions about which sports they pursue. "I'm going to help teach my son, my daughter, all the fundamentals and whatever they want to learn," he said in an interview with "Football Night in America" (via People). "But at the same time, I want to stay out of the way and let it be about them." He told USA Today Sports that he was already starting to see athletic potential in his daughter before she even reached age 2, and in a 2022 joint Instagram post with the KC Current soccer team, Brittany Matthews was pictured teaching Sterling how to kick a soccer ball. "Start 'em young," the caption read.

The couple's home has a unique feature

In 2019, Patrick Mahomes purchased a home in Kansas City for somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.8 million, per the New York Post. It was downright cozy and quaint compared to some of the palatial properties owned by other NFL players, having just three bedrooms and 2 ½ baths, but it did come with a gym and a wine room.

Mahomes and Brittany Matthews gave Bleacher Report a tour of their humble abode in 2021, and they revealed that Matthews chose all of the furnishings and décor. However, one addition was designed especially for Mahomes: an entire room to display his 180-pair collection of shoes. The space was large enough to be a bedroom, but according to the sneakerhead, his "babies" needed all that breathing room to be their best selves while chilling on their lighted shelves. "When you don't have enough room, I feel like you lose the value of some of your shoes," he said. "Some of the shoes that you've worn once, you forget about 'cause you don't see 'em." His goal: to rock each pair he owns twice annually. One of the room's most important features was a camera. Mahomes explained that he had it installed to catch his brother in the act if he ever tries to borrow any of his beloved kicks. As parents, he and Matthews have also likely learned about the destructive force of a toddler armed with a permanent marker.
