Inside Awkwafina's Relationship With Simu Liu

Awkwafina and Simu Liu blew Marvel fans away in "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." Liu told Variety that he thinks the movie has the power to "change the world." The movie is Marvel's first superhero movie with an Asian lead, and lead star Liu joked with the outlet, "No pressure." "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" was the first pandemic-era film to earn over $200 million at the global box office, per ScreenRant.

Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, was an established star before the superhero movie. Awkwafina got really famous on YouTube, then broke out in popular films "Ocean's Eight" and "Crazy Rich Asians." After winning a 2020 Golden Globe for her role in "The Farewell," Awkwafina became an acclaimed superstar. Even though Liu is the main star of the Marvel film, his claim to fame before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in the Canadian comedy series "Kim's Convenience."

Fans wonder if "Shang Chi" characters Katy and Shaun will become more than friends in later movies. Awkwafina told The Hollywood Reporter, "I think it makes perfect sense where they're at, and even if their relationship were to extend into a romantic one, it would still be rooted in the strength of their friendship." But what about Awkwafina's relationship with Simu Liu?

Awkwafina and Simu Liu's goofy friendship

Awkwafina and Simu Liu are friends, and they goof around together. According to People, the two stars of "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" had fun behind the scenes. The outlet reported the two stars created a bit for the movie's blooper reel. In the reel, Awkwafina tells Liu, "Yeah, we can be responsible. We can do that. Or ..." The actors then raise their eyebrows, smirking and turning towards the camera, which cracks up those behind the camera. People reported the two made each other and the crew laugh while working. But outside the set of the movie, it appears Awkwafina and Simu Liu are pals.

According to The Things, Liu organized a Toronto screening in 2019 for Awkwafina's movie "The Farewell." After the screening, the "Kim's Convenience" star posted on Instagram and wrote, "Thank you to everyone who showed up for our #GoldOpen screening of @TheFarewell! I can't describe to you how amazing this film is; the emotional truth of the story cut through to my very core, propelled by the amazing work of @awkwafina and @thumbelulu!"

Based on Liu's social media, it looks like he and his "Shang-Chi" co-star hung out together later that summer. In August 2019, Liu posted an Instagram photo with Awkwafina and two other friends with the caption, "Swaggiest asian tour group evah." LOL.

Awkwafina and Simu Liu's friendship grows with the MCU

Awkwafina and Simu Liu's friendship will likely grow stronger because the two "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" stars are now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with "The Corner Shop Network," Liu talked about a possible onscreen romance. "I think Shaun and Katy have a really wonderful relationship where they support each other, where they love each other in their way, and they have this carefree energy where they can really, truly be themselves around each other," Liu shared. "Whether that's romantic or not, that's not necessarily up for me to decide. I think the door is certainly open."

Awkwafina talked to Etalk Canada about working with Liu. "I think Simu did superbly in all of this," she told the outlet. "He's incredibly easy to work with. He really brings something to this role that we haven't seen before. He's just a really talented guy."

The "Shang-Chi" actors (and friends) will suit up for upcoming Marvel adventures, but those details are under lock and key! In the meantime, Liu recently revealed the extreme pain required to be in the "Barbie" movie, while Awkwafina is working on a new comedy with Sandra Oh for Hulu.
