Farmer Wants A Wife: The Biggest Drama From The Reboot

The premise of "Farmer Wants a Wife" sounds like a real-life rom-com: four attractive, successful farmers set out to find their one true love amongst a gaggle of city women who have little to no experience living in a rural environment. What could possibly go wrong with that setup? A lot, it turns out.

The original iteration of "Farmer Wants a Wife" premiered in the UK back in 2001. A short-lived American adaptation of the series ran for a handful of episodes on The CW back in 2008, with a reboot that hit Fox in the spring of 2023. In this current version of the series four farmers— Farmer Allen, Farmer Hunter, Farmer Ryan, and Farmer Landon— each selected five women from a larger pool to spend several weeks on their respective homesteads. Throughout the course of the season, the women have to prove they're cut out for life on a farm while the bachelors have to determine which single lady is the best match for them. The dating show has a much more laid-back feel than other major franchises like "The Bachelor" (there are no awkward rose ceremonies or forced eliminations, for one thing) which seems to make it appealing to a much wider audience.

But that doesn't mean the show lacks dramatic moments. As of this writing, the season is only half over, and there have already been a handful of emotional explosions and juicy revelations. Here, we've rounded up some of those big dramatic moments in a single list. Read on, and then head over to Hulu to watch the episodes for yourself!

The Divorce Bombshell

After the speed dating and group selections in Episode One, each of the four farmers got to choose one lucky lady to have an uninterrupted, 24-hour solo date with before the rest of the group arrived at the farm. For this all-important honor, Farmer Allen chose Cassidy Jo, a sales rep and former beauty pageant contestant who lives in Phoenix, Arizona. So at the start of Episode Two, after a quick tour of the farm, the couple sat down to a homemade dinner in one of Allen's barns, where they dug into some meatier conversation.

Cassidy Jo wasted no time getting to the point and started by questioning Allen on his former relationships and dating history. The conversation seemed to be flowing smoothly until she asked him why his last serious relationship ended. A clearly flustered Allen stuttered a bit before replying, "Didn't I tell you I was married? ... I was married once before." Cassidy Jo, obviously shocked by the revelation, replied, "I don't really believe in divorce."

From there, the conversation took a tense turn, and Allen explained he had "tried everything" to make the relationship work, and that the divorce ultimately hadn't been his decision. Somewhat mollified by his explanations, Cassidy Jo eased up, telling the camera that he seemed like he was in a good place and really wanted to find a partner to spend the rest of his life with, so she'd be willing to overlook his previous failed marriage — for now.

Questioning Farmer Landon's intentions

Compared to Farmer Allen, Farmer Landon made it through the first two episodes relatively unscathed. But that all changed in Episode Three.

While on a massive group date with all four farmers and all of the women, Zoe, a photographer from Nashville, confronted the bachelor about his intentions. She first expressed her frustrations to her housemates, explaining that she felt as if she had no idea what Landon was thinking about the whole experience because he hadn't taken the time to talk to any of them about anything substantial nor had he pulled anyone away from the group for the all-important one-on-one time. "I just want Landon to really try to get to know us. I feel like he hasn't really been on a deeper level with connecting with the girls, which is just making me have doubts and concerns," she told the camera.

So when Landon approached his bachelorettes at the table where they were all gathered, she decided there was no time like the present to address her feelings. "I think there's a lot we wanna say," she started, before boldly asking if he actually wanted to get to know them or if he just agreed to the experience for other reasons. Landon attempted to reassure her, saying that he was "trying his damndest" to develop stronger connections with each of the women but was slightly overwhelmed. This seemed to help a bit, as Zoe conceded that he was in a tough spot, but she still maintained that he needed to do more to prove himself.

Calling Farmer Ryan out for wasting time

Zoe wasn't the only single lady concerned about her farmer's intentions and priorities. In Episode Four, Porschia confronted Farmer Ryan about the exact same thing.

It was clear to even the most casual viewer that Farmer Ryan and Porschia had failed to find that immediate spark between them. But she, at least, seemed to be holding out hope that after getting to know each other better there would be some sort of slow-burning connection. She'd been a good sport throughout the first three episodes, gamely taking part in the process as best she could, but by Episode Four she was over it, telling one of her housemates that she didn't feel like their relationship was progressing at all and admitting that she was beginning to be concerned that he wasn't interested in forming a connection at all.

Later that night when the group gathered for dinner, Porschia pulled Ryan aside to share those concerns directly with him. "I just wanted to say my piece," she told the rancher. "Let me say what I want to say, and then you can talk after ... I just feel like, since I was picked, you haven't actually tried to pursue me like everyone else." Ryan shot back, "If I can be truthful, I just feel like we don't connect that well, and so I didn't know how to move about it." Unwilling to let him off the hook that easily, Porschia replied that he should have been honest earlier, because waiting so long to be upfront about his lack of feelings meant she wound up "wasting her time."

An unprovoked attack

Porschia's frustrations weren't the only ones bubbling over in Episode Four. Cassidy Jo was also fed up with Farmer Allen's reserved nature and was quick to let him know.

From the jump, Farmer Allen was proven to be the shyest of the bachelors — the kind of man who demonstrates his love through actions, not words, and who wasn't prone to carrying on a conversation just for the sake of conversation. While that was okay with some of the ladies, others were having a harder time adjusting to his emotionally reserved personality, Cassidy Jo among them.

So after dinner one evening, Cassidy Jo asked to speak with Farmer Allen privately. In a confessional, she told the camera she had asked to chat with him because she was starting to have doubts about whether or not he was really that open to finding love. "I wanna know, are you ready for this?" she asked her suitor, continuing, "Are you scared? You're not afraid to have a wife again?" Allen attempted to calm her fears, telling her was more than ready to find a lasting love, but that he was also just the type of person to take things slow. When she continued to lay on the pressure, the calm, collected country man finally exploded telling her "not to attack him like that" and to let him handle things how he felt was best.

While the confrontation was dramatic, the show of emotion seemed to be exactly what Cassidy Jo needed, and she relaxed a bit, apologizing for doubting him and demonstrating that she was ready to move forward with getting to know him.

The kiss heard round the world

Following that confrontation between Cassidy Jo and Farmer Allen in Episode Four, the pair shared a kiss. Cassidy Jo had been pushing for a more physical display of affection from the bachelor for several episodes, but he had so far refused, explaining that he wanted to take things slow. But after their fight, he seemed to have decided it wasn't worth the effort to keep resisting her on the issue and gave in, giving her a chaste peck on the lips. Cassidy Jo, of course, was delighted.

But she didn't share the big news right away like you might have expected. It wasn't until a big group outing in Episode Five, that she admitted to her housemates that she had, in fact, kissed Farmer Allen. The revelation sent off shockwaves. For starters, her housemates were upset that she had kept the kiss a secret from them for so long. They felt that if things were getting more serious between their suitor and another woman it was only fair that they know so that they could decide how to proceed accordingly. Additionally, the kiss took place just hours after Khelsi's solo date with the farmer wrapped up, leaving her questioning where she really stood in his heart.

For his part, Farmer Allen was much more direct about what happened. He answered Kehlsi frankly when she questioned him on the smooch, reassuring her that he was still very much interested in getting to know her better, and then sealed the deal with a (much more passionate) kiss than the one he gave Cassidy Jo.

Hayley R. storms off set

Farmer Allen's group of ladies weren't the only ones experiencing some drama in Episode Five. Farmer Ryan was also going through it with his picks.

Right around the same time Allen was making out with Khelsi, another contestant was threatening to walk off the show completely. Hayley R. had been Ryan's pick for the first 24-hour solo date, and the two had seemingly had a pretty good time together. However, since that first week, some distance had sprung up between them. There'd been less flirting, fewer side conversations, and not a single kiss (despite the fact that Ryan had been free with the PDA with other women). As Hayley explained to the cameras, "I feel very vulnerable right now because it's hard for me to see him with the other girls and know that he's forming connections." She later sobbed to an on-site producer, "This man acts like he likes me, he doesn't. I don't want to be here. I didn't come here to be a background character ... I'm done."

The producer convinced Hayley to sit down with Ryan and express how she was feeling directly to him. He was somewhat sympathetic but revealed that her tantrum had him thinking twice about keeping her around. Her emotional nature, he explained, wouldn't be a good fit for him as he didn't want to spend his life walking on eggshells in order to make sure she was happy. So (spoiler alert!), he sent her home at the end of the episode.

A tearful goodbye

Finally, the most heartbreaking dramatic moment from the first half of this season of "Farmer Wants a Wife" is Meghan's exit from Farmer Hunter's homestead.

Up until this point, quiet Meghan had been a front-runner for Hunter. Their personalities and desires for the future really seemed to align, and she was more than willing to lend a hand on even the dirtiest farm tasks. Hunter had chosen her for a solo date early in Episode Six and had gone so far as taking her to meet his family. It genuinely felt like, barring any big shake-up, she'd be the one he'd ask to stick around at the end of the show.

But then a shake-up came, right in the middle of the episode. Early one morning, Meghan knocked on Hunter's door, crying and explaining that her grandfather had died overnight. She would, of course, be dropping out and heading home to grieve and be with her family. The moment was hugely emotional — even Hunter was tearing up, clearly feeling a lot for this woman he'd just begun to fall for. After driving her to the airport, he told the cameras he was struggling because he rarely gets this close to people, but acknowledging that she had done the right thing. He was so broken up over her departure that he refused to eat dinner with the remaining contestants that night. As a viewer, there was definitely a feeling that Hunter had just watched his soulmate walk out of his life for reasons that were beyond either one of their control. It was heart-wrenching, to say the least.
