Does Miley Cyrus Regret Her Marriage To Liam Hemsworth?

Even though it's over, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's decade-long romance remains the stuff of pop culture lore. The pair met on the set of "The Last Song" in 2009, raising eyebrows because Cyrus was just 17 while Hemsworth was 19. Several breakups, 15 pets, and one infamous foam finger twerk later, the pair tied the knot at their home in Tennessee — but it wasn't meant to be. "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time," Cyrus' rep told Us Weekly in 2019. "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers."

Years later, the "Wrecking Ball" singer opened up about the conflict in their relationship. "When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone," Cyrus said on "The Howard Stern Show." "I don't get off on drama or fighting." Instead of the love ballads she'd once penned about Hemsworth (i.e. "Malibu"), her lyrics shifted towards independence and self-empowerment (see: "Flowers"). She was also candid about the pitfalls of her short-lived marriage. In 2022, Cyrus played Cupid when she helped a fan propose to his partner onstage at Lollapalooza. "Congratulations! Honey, I hope your marriage goes better than mine. Mine was a f***ing disaster," she said.

Disaster it may have been, but there was plenty of good to come out of Cyrus' time with Hemsworth. In fact, the "Plastic Hearts" hitmaker doesn't regret her marriage to the Aussie actor.

Miley Cyrus embraces her marriage to Liam Hemsworth as a formative life experience

Just because something doesn't work out doesn't mean it wasn't worth experiencing — at least according to Miley Cyrus. "I wouldn't erase my story or want it to be erased," she told British Vogue, referencing her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. "Having an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling." It's this storytelling that has influenced her music, bringing out a versatility that's demonstrated through Cyrus' exploration with different genres. However, the songbird also told British Vogue that her 2023 album, "Endless Summer Vacation," isn't about any one ex in particular. Rather, she sees her music as representing various life experiences.

That said, Cyrus' relationship with Hemsworth was still a formative part of her life that helped mold her into the person she is today. "I had a very public, very big breakup that was a 10-year span of a relationship," the songbird said on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast in 2020. "I tried not to get lost in the emotion ... it's like a death when you lose a loved one, it's that deep. It feels like a death." Separately, she expressed on "The Howard Stern Show" that despite the divorce, her feelings for Hemsworth will always remain. "I really do and did love him very, very, very much and still do, always will," she said. Those aren't the words of a girl who's looking back on her marriage with regret.

How does Liam Hemsworth view his marriage?

As for Liam Hemsworth's feelings about his marriage to Miley Cyrus, that answer is a little more complicated. After the two broke off their first engagement in 2013, Hemsworth hinted to Men's Journal in 2015 that he still had feelings for his ex-fiancee. "You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose ... We were together five years, so I don't think those feelings will ever change," he said. Cue all the feels for Cyrus-Hemsworth stans! Given the way the "Hunger Games" alum was speaking about his ex, no one was *that* surprised when they reconciled circa 2016.

But after their ill-fated marriage and divorce in 2019, Hemsworth shut down. On Instagram, he noted that he and Cyrus had split, adding, "This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false." Since then, the actor has remained tight-lipped on his marriage, though a source told ET in 2020 that he "was very hurt when they initially broke up."

Hemsworth isn't one to speak publicly about painful personal matters, but it could be that he thinks the split was for the best. Incompatibilities arose early on: he is conservative-minded and Cyrus is free-spirited. Add in the fact that Hemsworth wants kids while Cyrus plans not to have children, and maybe all's well that ends well with these two.
