Strange Things About Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom's Relationship

Actor Orlando Bloom and songstress Katy Perry gifted fans with a sweet surprise on Valentine's Day 2019 when they confirmed their engagement. Instead of a formal announcement, Bloom and Perry both took to their respective social media accounts to share the happy news, posting identical photos of their faces against a backdrop of heart-shaped balloons. Perry, who showed of her gorgeous engagement ring in the snap, captioned the shot: "Full bloom," while the Pirates of the Caribbean star wrote, "lifetimes." Aww.

Although this is undeniably a special time for the pair, the road to the altar has been packed with twists and turns. It's a bit difficult to ignore, for example, that much of their romance was fraught with headline-making drama and rumored uncertainties — we're talking Bloom's cozy moment with a certain singer not named Perry, a breakup, and a dash of public nudity (don't worry, we'll get to that soon enough). While Perry and Bloom might want to leave the questionable footnotes of their romantic history in the past, there's a good chance fans won't forget them anytime soon. Let's revisit the strange things about Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's relationship.

When art imitates life

One of Perry's well-known hits is a little tune called "Hot N Cold," a song about an on-and-off again romance. "We fight, we break up/We kiss, we make up," the pop star croons in the 2008 single. (The video features Perry standing at the altar in a white dress as her groom gets cold feet.)

Little did Perry know at the time, but her romance with Bloom — which reportedly started around January 2016 — would somewhat mirror these lyrics in real-life. That's right, folks. The couple's relationship wasn't always on steady ground and the duo reportedly took a break around March 2017. Eagle-eyed fans noticed the two hadn't been photographed together in a while, and the duo's reps eventually confirmed the breakup rumors via a joint statement (via E! News): "Before rumors or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time."

Perry was the one who supposedly called it quits, with a source telling E! News: "Katy pulled the plug. It was a few events that happened over the past few months. They both still love each other very much, though, and getting back together could happen once they have some space." Making matters even more curious? The insider claimed Perry was considering rekindling her relationship with singer John Mayer.  "She still has a strong love for him," they alleged.

Wait, what about Justin Bieber?

If you're curious about how pop star Justin Bieber factors into Perry and Bloom's relationship, you're probably not alone. Talk of the bizarre connection kicked off in October 2018, when Perry posted photos to Instagram of her standing in front of a poster featuring a shirtless Bieber. "Teen idol/american idol," she captioned the seemingly random shot. Hmm. At first glance, this might seem like an innocent promotion of American Idol, the reality series in which Perry as a judge, but you'll probably want to heat up a bowl of popcorn because there's a lot of history attached to this shot.

Bloom and Bieber were once embroiled in an allegedly heated rivalry that turned violent in July 2014 at Cipriani, a popular restaurant in Ibiza, Spain. Bloom was supposedly upset over rumors that the Biebs had hooked up with his ex-wife, model Miranda Kerr, before their split in 2013. Rumor has it that when Bieber and Bloom crossed paths at that hot spot in Ibiza, the actor refused to shake Bieber's hand, which inspired the pop star to make a comment about Kerr. "Bieber said something rude to Orlando, like, 'She was good,'" a source told Page Six. Punches were reportedly thrown, and the two had to be separated.

Bloom seemingly addressed Perry's odd social media post in the comments section, writing (via People), "thirsty." Well, that's one way to put it.

Yep, Selena Gomez is involved, too

As if the situation involving Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom's ex-wife isn't sketchy enough, the Bieb's most famous ex, songstress Selena Gomez, allegedly has some eyebrow-raising history with Bloom. Here's the deal: In May 2016, Bloom and Gomez were spotted getting cozy at a nightclub in Las Vegas. This allegedly went down while the actor was in a relationship with Katy Perry. TMZ published photos of the pair hugging and embracing. In one shot, Gomez appears to be nuzzling Bloom's neck. Yikes.

Shortly after the news broke, Perry tweeted a link to the 1969 song "Is That All There Is?" The ballad references disillusionment and heartache, and fans were quick to assume she was referencing her situation with Bloom. One verse says, "And then I fell in love with the most wonderful boy in the world ... And then one day he went away and I thought I'd die, but I didn't. And when I didn't, I said to myself, 'Is that all there is to love?'"

In an odd twist, Perry soon appeared to backpedal on that tweet, sharing an article about Bloom's charity work: "Instead of giving energy & eyeballs to dumb conspiracy, check out how COOL this is," she tweeted. Gomez responded to that message with a raised-hands emoji and added her two cents in a separate tweet: "#killemwithkindness – one day they'll get it lol." Wait, what really happened here? We're seriously baffled.

Jealous much?

It's not uncommon for a celebrity to go on a date in the name of charity, which is exactly what Orlando Bloom did in December 2018 for a concert benefiting victims of the California wildfires, according to People. The weird part? Instead going on a date with a fan or admirer, the honor went to Katy Perry. Uh, say what?

Apparently, Perry didn't want her man go out with someone else, even if it was all in good fun. The singer's trepidation became evident as she presented Bloom to the audience, saying: "You can do a motorcycle ride with him to a lunch destination to have lunch with Orlando freaking Bloom. That also means that when you are on the motorcycle with him you're holding him in a way that I am not excited about." A fan named Laura placed a bid of $20,000, but Perry stopped the auction before it went any further. "Laura, I'm sorry — I'm buying it for $50,000," she tells the hopeful bidder.

While we understand why Perry wouldn't want her guy to get cozy with someone else, couldn't she have put her jealousy aside for a good cause? The whole thing is a bit strange, if you ask us.

Boundaries? What boundaries?

It's not atypical for couples to go through growing pains when they move in together, especially concerning personal boundaries, but would could be considered abnormal? Completely disregarding your partner's personal preferences to benefit yourself, something Perry arguably did when she threw away Bloom's beloved toiletry bag. Perry confessed to the questionable move in February 2019, during a conversation with Paper magazine. "My boyfriend doesn't even know that I threw away his toiletry bag while he's been gone," she said. "I told him I got him a new one for Christmas. He said, 'Oh, this has been around the world for 10 years and he wanted to keep it in a drawer. I was like, 'The moment you leave is the moment this thing is going in the trash.'"

Perry might have had good intentions here (There's nothing wrong with sprucing up your style, right?), but we wonder why she didn't run it by her beloved first. In the immortal words of Aretha Franklin, it's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Perry's TMI remarks don't add up

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are reportedly very private about their relationship, which is why we're confused about the songstress' penchant for TMI remarks. Case in point: In June 2017, Perry admitted on The Late Late Show with James Corden that Bloom was her second best sexual partner (via The Cut), a tidbit she revealed when asked to rate the abilities of her exes. Musician Diplo came in first, while her other ex, John Mayer, clocked in at number three. Um, thanks for the info, girl?

That's not the first time Perry dished the dirt on her sex life. Check out the comment she left on a May 2018 Instagram photo marketing Killer Joe, a play starring Bloom. "I need a season pass for that a**," she quipped, according to a screenshot (via CommentsByCelebs). Um, tell us how you really feel. The pop star tried to downplay the gaffe, adding that she meant to send the racy remark "privately," but her track record arguably indicates that she's occasionally willing to drop bombs to mark her territory.

Did we really need to see that?

One of the most bizarre and memorable moments from Bloom and Perry's romance took place in August 2016, when the couple was photographed paddle-boarding in Italy. Although this outing might sound innocent on the surface, it garnered national attention because Bloom was completely nude at the time. While the actor looked perfectly content as he paddled along with his twig and berries on full display, Perry didn't appear as pleased.

"He asked me if I wanted to be [naked] and I was just like, It's one of those things where I was like, 'oh nah,'" she explained in a June 2017 radio interview (via Metro). Kind of an odd request to make of your partner, no? Perry also said Bloom was "just trying to show off for all the people back at the shore," which is interesting when you consider a comment he made in November 2017 about the situation. "Yes, it was extremely surprising," he told Elle about the media's wild response to his birthday suit. "I wouldn't have put myself in that position if I'd thought it would happen." Oh, c'mon. Bloom has been a Hollywood A-lister for a long time, and yet he claims he didn't think the press would lose it over his privates. Okay, buddy.

Say what you will, but we can't wait to see what strange developments the future holds for this fascinating pair.
