The Real Reason Taylor Swift And Joe Alwyn Are So Secretive

The 2020 Golden Globes ceremony was a big event for many Hollywood duos, including Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson, Michelle Williams and Thomas Kail, and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. There was even a buzz-worthy reunion between exes Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. However, one of the most surprising pairs to show up at the award show was Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, who stepped out in public for a rare date night together.

Swift and Alwyn have been dating since 2017 but have kept their relationship very private. When they decided to both attend the GGs this year, fans were quick to hop online to celebrate the somewhat unexpected situation. One Twitter user shared a photo of a sweet moment between Swift and Alwyn during the ceremony, writing, "Taylor Swift gets a warm welcome back to her seat from bf Joe Alwyn after she presents onstage." Another social media sleuth tweeted a clip of the two talking with a fellow attendee. And, of course, what's a pop culture moment without a gif, like this one of the couple applauding in unison

All that may seem silly, but to Swifties, these moments were a big deal. "TAYLOR SWIFT AND JOE ALWYN IN THE SAME ROOM IN AN HD VIDEO, THIS IS NOT REAL LIFE?" tweeted one fan. But the Beverly Hills Hotel wasn't the only place this secretive pair was spotted that night.

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn even hit up an after-party

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn apparently didn't want to end their date night when the Golden Globes wrapped, so they dashed off to one of Hollywood's hottest after-parties.

Swift and Alwyn were guests at the CAA affair — the same exclusive soiree where Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt met up. The songstress and her actor beau were photographed making their way to the event after Swift made a quick outfit change. The singer ditched the yellow and blue floral gown by Etro that she wore at the awards show in favor of a glittery navy blue dress (which was perfectly on-trend) with fitted, full-length sleeves and a cinch at her hip. The star also let her hair down and added a bright splash of red lipstick to complete her second striking look of the night.

Alwyn stuck to the same tux he wore to the Globes, and considering how it looked on him, you can't really blame him. If the way Swift affectionately held his face in her hands was any indication, she certainly approved. Considering these two seemed to enjoy their night so much, let's hope we get to see them out and about more often in the future, but first, how about a short trip down memory lane?

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn may have met at the Met

It's generally believed that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn started seeing each other sometime in 2017, but they actually may have met before that. According to Glamour, both the songstress and the actor attended the Met Gala in May of 2016 and might have been introduced at that time. However, even if they had shaken hands at that particular event, they weren't destined to begin dating right away because Tay Tay was taken.

When Swift showed up to the gala that year, she was still reportedly dating DJ Calvin Harris, whom she'd been with for more than a year. Although that relationship fizzled out soon after, Swift quickly rebounded with Marvel actor Tom Hiddleston, whom she also happened to meet at the Met Gala. Although Swift and Hiddleston stirred up their fair share of headlines while they were together, that love affair was short-lived and by September of that same year, it was over. That's a good thing for Alwyn, who became Swift's next (and final?) fella.

Taylor Swift wants to keep life with Joe Alwyn 'manageable'

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn may be getting more comfortable when it comes to showing off their love, but these two still appear to be protecting their privacy. While we caught glimpses of them together at the Golden Globes, they still opted not to walk the red carpet as a pair.

Swift opened up about why she doesn't talk about Alwyn in interviews. "I've learned that if I do [talk about my relationship with Alwyn], people think it's up for discussion, and our relationship isn't up for discussion," she told Elle. "If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we'd be talking about it — but it's just that it goes out into the world. That's where the boundary is, and that's where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable."

As for Alwyn, he talked to The Times about the public's interest in his relationship with Swift in December 2019. "I just don't pay attention to what I don't want to pay attention to," he said. "I turn everything else down on a dial. I don't have any interest in tabloids. I know what I want to do, and that's this, and that's what I am doing." Sounds reasonable and it certainly seems to be working for this famous couple.
