The Real Reason Maisie Williams Missed Her Best Friend's Wedding

On Game of Thrones, actress Maisie Williams played Arya Stark, the sister of Sansa Stark, who was brought to the screen by Sophie Turner. In real life, the two young stars formed a special bond and became besties. "I thought Sophie was the coolest thing I'd ever seen," Williams told Rolling Stone in March 2019. "I get why they do chemistry reads [for TV shows], because when it's right, it's so right. Like, we're best friends. And they could see that all those years ago, and it must have been real magic watching these two girls have the best time together."

In turn, Turner sat down to chat with fellow star Jessica Chastain for Vogue Paris and opened up about her relationship with Williams, saying in June 2019, "My best friend, Maisie ... she and I have a very, like, intense friendship, a friendship that, like, I haven't had with any of my other girlfriends before."

So, if they're so close, then why wasn't Williams a guest at Turner's (first) wedding to Joe Jonas? Well, there's a perfectly good explanation.

Maisie Williams wasn't invited to Sophie Turner's wedding for a spontaneous reason

When Sophie Turner decided to marry singer Joe Jonas, the pair planned an exciting, love-filled event in France. "There was reported to be a star-studded guest list in place, more Game of Thrones cameos than the Red Wedding, and even Sophie Turner's on-screen sister and real-life BFF Maisie Williams as a bridesmaid," according to Marie Claire U.K. And that ceremony did happen — eventually. It even looks like Williams attended, based on an IG photo.

However, being the quirky couple that they are, Turner and Jonas decided to first spontaneously tie the knot while in Las Vegas in May 2019. Marie Claire explained that their elopement "was so last minute that Sophie didn't even call her mother until the evening of the wedding to let her know." Williams also didn't have time to travel to the location of the unexpected nuptials.

But that doesn't mean that the couple was alone at the time. In town for the Billboard Music Awards, they were joined by "Khalid, Diplo, and musicians Dan and Shay," and "in place of Maisie, Sophie had her now sister-in-law, and fellow J-sister, Priyanka Chopra as her maid of honor."

Considering Williams is well aware of Turner's nature, we're sure that she wasn't offended that her BFF got hitched so suddenly.
