Dr. Phil & His Wife Robin Say Haters Have Had It All Wrong About Their Marriage For Years

Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin McGraw, would like to clear the air about those wild divorce rumors. For years, the talk show host and his long-time partner have faced plenty of speculation about their relationship, including talk of their imminent split, despite having been married since 1976. In a special episode of "The Dr. Phil Podcast" in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary, the couple talked about how absurd they find the gossip.

"Through ... 25 years of our marriage, tabloids have been saying we were getting a divorce," Dr. Phil said. "I saw something on the Internet yesterday that said, 'Why Dr. Phil divorced Robin.' It's like they went from saying we're going to [divorce] to why we did [it]." But in reality, things couldn't be further from the truth. "I think clickbait is, they put up what'll sell tickets," Dr. Phil lamented. Robin agreed, saying, "You know, they write it, but they never ever would show the papers where we filed. They couldn't do it because it never happened."

Dr. Phil and his wife haven't escaped the rampant divorce gossip surrounding their 50-year marriage. Some have proven especially harder to shake, including a particularly outlandish claim involving a $400 million divorce settlement, which he and Robin simply found amusing. "I remember [...] telling you, 'Hey listen, if you can do this, do it," Dr. Phil recalled with a chuckle. "I'll meet you behind the courthouse. We'll get remarried, and you'll have $400 million."

Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw have repeatedly tried to squash the rumors

This isn't the first time the McGraws have debunked divorce rumors. In 2009, an article published by the National Enquirer claimed that Dr. Phil was on the verge of divorcing his wife after Robin McGraw allegedly threatened to publish a tell-all book exposing the truth about their marriage. "Robin reveals how Phil has humiliated her by his cheating and lying," an insider told the outlet, per Snopes, which stated the story was false. "She's also written about their secret divorce deal — which is already done." This, and other claims about the TV host being emotionally and physically abusive toward his wife, prompted Dr. Phil to file a lawsuit against National Enquirer in 2016, though the case was ultimately dismissed. Throughout their marriage, he and Robin have repeatedly tried to squash such salacious claims, but they just never seem to go away.

In 2008, for instance, Dr. Phil and his wife pushed back against the chatter during a joint appearance on his eponymous talk show, fresh off celebrating a major relationship milestone. "I am not getting a divorce. Trust me," said the psychologist (via Snopes). "She's here. [...] We just celebrated our 32nd anniversary." Meanwhile, Robin seemingly had enough of the false claims, saying, "It really bothers me, because you know what? I'm not even mad at him, and they have me divorcing him!"

They also brought up the divorce rumors during a 2019 episode of "Dr. Phil," while discussing how sensational stories can be misleading. "Not only are they completely untrue, we've been married for 43 years," Phil stressed (via Facebook). "We've been together — happily — for 47 years. I think she's decided she might as well keep me now."
