'80s Heartthrobs Who Married Much Younger Women

From silver screen icons Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall to modern-day talents Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the showbiz world has always served up plentiful age-gap marriages. And the heartthrobs of the 1980s have been responsible for more than their fair share of celebrity couples with bigger age gaps than you thought. Indeed, although the likes of Matthew Broderick, Rob Lowe, and Patrick Dempsey all married within their age range, some of their peers ended up walking down the aisle with women who were years, decades, and even more than a quarter-century younger. 

While the divorce courts soon beckoned for many, a select few inter-generational couples remain very much together. So, which movie idols are still keeping up with their other halves? Which TV pin-up appears to have finally found the one at the fifth time of asking? And which proud conservative is now wed to someone technically young enough to be his granddaughter? Here's a look at 13 unlikely age-gap match-ups. 

The truth about John Stamos is that he first walked down the aisle in 1998 with Rebecca Romijn, the "X-Men" star who was 10 years his junior. But following their divorce in 2005, the "Full House" favorite went for a much bigger age gap, getting hitched to another actor who was young enough to be his daughter. Yes, in 2018, the then 54-year-old Stamos said "I do" to the then-31-year-old Caitlin McHugh, best known for playing Sloan in "The Vampire Diaries," with the pair going on to become parents to son Billy just two months later. Despite being the much older party, the occasional Beach Boys member believes that he's the one who's learned — and indeed gained — the most from their marriage.

Stamos, who shot to fame in the '80s playing Uncle Jesse, paid tribute to McHugh and their young child in 2024 for how they've helped him to maintain his sobriety. "They have kept me on this path because going down the road of being sober and taking care of yourself, everybody tries. Everybody does it," he told People. And he believes that McHugh has also expanded his horizons, adding, "The other day I was listening to some political book or something. I was like, 'I never used to care about this.' And she said, 'That's because of me.' But she brightens up the house. And it's not just political talk, it's being a good human talk."

Following in the footsteps of Kim Basinger, Hilaria Hayward-Thomas became the second Mrs. Alec Baldwin in 2012 when she exchanged vows with the man who — thanks to roles in "Beetlejuice," "Working Girl," "Married to the Mob," "Talk Radio," and "She's Having a Baby" — pretty much dominated the cinema of 1988. Interestingly, unlike many celebrities in significant age-gap marriages, Hilaria has acknowledged that hers has both benefits and drawbacks. "I don't believe that age is just a number, at least in our situation," she told podcast "Uncut and Uncensored with Caroline Stanbury" (via People). "I think that there's certain things where I have to look at him and say he has 26 more years of experience. And sometimes that's a flex, and sometimes that means that we need to do a little therapy."

Hilaria, who famously allowed the cameras to delve into their relationship and family life with their seven kids on TLC reality show "The Baldwins," believes that things have become much easier since she turned the big 4-0. "You know what you want, and there's probably a confidence that you have now that is extremely sexy and extremely just comforting," she said. "Whereas the ups and the downs and the insecurities that we often have when we're younger and not knowing ourselves. "

Bruce Willis, who made his name in will-they-won't-they rom-com series "Moonlighting" before reinventing himself as a bona fide vest-clad action hero in the "Die Hard" franchise, became one half of a Hollywood power couple when he married Demi Moore in 1987. But following their divorce at the turn of the century, he walked down the aisle for a second time with a British-American model 23 years his junior. Willis went on to have two kids with Emma Heming, adding to the three daughters he shares with his first wife, and the pair are still very much together, albeit in wildly different and desperately sad circumstances. 

Indeed, in 2023, the superstar was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, resulting in an earlier-than-planned retirement from the world of showbiz and his partner also becoming his caregiver. "I've had to learn to walk alongside the grief," Heming explained to Vogue about the desperate situation. "It's always with me. I can't shake it, but I'm going to breathe, and I'm going to be sad and all the feelings and emotions that I'm going to feel, but I am also not going to just allow it to be this one note of that." She went on to add, "What my girls are seeing is love in action — the care we've built around Bruce and the people who show up for him. That's how they understand love: through care. In the end, we'll all either need it or give it."

The oft-tragic David Hasselhoff, who found fame playing opposite a talking car in "Knight Rider" before launching the world's most-viewed show "Baywatch," was as confident and forthright as ever while discussing his early relationship with Welsh model Hayley Roberts in 2012. "I've thought about the age gap and it doesn't bother me or Hayley I hope," he told the Mirror. "But look, I've just turned 59 and I'm good. I'm fit and healthy. I can outlast almost everybody in the gym." It's perhaps fair to say that few would have expected the pair, whose age gap stretched to 28 years, would have lasted the distance. However, six years later, they walked down the aisle and a further eight years on, they're very still much an item. 

The man famously nicknamed The Hoff first met Roberts in a hotel lobby during his stint on the judging panel of "Britain's Got Talent." As smooth as ever, he agreed to give her an autograph in exchange for her telephone number. And from then on, they remained inseparable. In an interview with OK! magazine, Roberts backed up Hasselhoff's earlier claims that neither party is concerned with the fact they're of different generations. "David acts so much younger, he doesn't see his age," she claimed (via People). "I'm probably older than my years. I don't feel like he's that much older than me."

76-year-old Richard Gere caused quite the stir in 2026 when he was cast as the love interest of 28-year-old Diana Silvers in romantic dramedy "Asymmetry." And the Hollywood veteran, who was lusted after in the '80s thanks to roles in "American Gigolo" and "An Officer and a Gentleman," is no stranger to such age gaps in real life, too. Yes, Gere is 33 years older than Alejandra Silva, the Spanish publicist who became his third wife in 2018 following marriages to Carey Lowell and Cindy Crawford, both of whom were also significantly younger. While the latter has admitted that their generational gap contributed to their split, Silva doesn't appear to have such concerns.

"I'm not ignoring our age difference and what it means to be with a Hollywood star, but when there's such a strong karmic energy, the problems disappear," she told Hola! in 2018. The political activist, who also has two children with Gere and another from a previous marriage to mining magnate Govind Friedland, also insisted that her other half still has plenty of stamina: "[Richard] has promised me at least 20 good years! But I have to confess that he has much more energy than me, is much more active. It's hard to keep up with him."

"I didn't go out looking for an age gap or someone really younger than me," Dennis Quad insisted to The Guardian in 2019, just a year before tying the knot in Santa Barbara with Laura Savoie, a yoga instructor 39 years his senior. "You have no control over who you fall in love with." The star of '80s classics "Innerspace," "The Big Easy," and "Great Balls of Fire," who'd previously been wed to actor P.J. Soles, A-lister Meg Ryan, and realtor Kimberly Buffington, was first introduced to Savoie at a business function while she was studying at the University of Texas at Austin for her Ph.D. And it was apparently love at first sight.

The truth about Quaid and his wife, both of whom have also established a professional relationship as the co-founders of faith-based production company Bonniedale Films, is that they are still going strong. In 2026, Quaid told Us Weekly that their shared faith has been key to their marriage: "God is in our relationship. That [had] never even occurred to me before. I thought, 'Well, I have a relationship with God, so did she,' but to have God be the third entity in the relationship is kind of a new idea. But that's really the way it is ... You look to the other person to solve your problems, and we're not equipped to do that."

Best-known for his performances in '80s classics "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," and "Weird Science," Anthony Michael Hall was one of the most popular members of the Brat Pack that also included the likes of Charlie Sheen, Rob Lowe, and Molly Ringwald. The woman he married in 2020, though, wasn't even born at the height of his success. Indeed, the Slovak-Canadian ex-model Lucia Oskerova came into the world in 1990, making her 23 years younger than her hubby. This also meant that while she was only in her early 30s when they became parents to son Michael in 2024, Hall was in his mid-50s. 

In an interview with People, however, the actor insisted that this had always been part of the plan. "I couldn't be happier because I always knew, even when I was a young man, that I wanted to get started later," he said about his new status as a dad. "Fatherhood and being a husband — that's absolutely the greatest role," he added. "It's a full-time job ... but we love it. We just embrace it, and our son such a joy."

It may seem hard to believe now, but thanks to roles in "Johnny Handsome," "Angel Heart," and, of course, "9½ Weeks," Mickey Rourke was once considered the '80s ultimate heartthrob. But according to second wife Carre Otis, the model-actor who met him as a 19-year-old while filming "Wild Orchid," he was far from the model husband. Carre, who got hitched to Rourke in 1992 before filing for divorce six years later, published a book, "Beauty, Disrupted" in which she accused the troubled star of both mental and physical abusive. Speaking to HuffPost on the promotional trail in 2011, she explained that their 18-year-age gap made it much harder to walk away earlier: "We were both from really dysfunctional backgrounds, and we both had the perfect ground to feed that dysfunction because we didn't have tools and I was a kid! I was a young person and obviously greatly influenced by one of America's greatest actors at that moment."

Rourke, who'd previously been wed to "Homeboy" co-star Debra Feuer, made headlines in 2026 for a rambling Instagram reel in which he accepted responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage. "Wrong (girl) not her fault, all my mistake," he wrote (via Y! Entertainment). "I was a fool fit so many [years], not her fault at all. I just made a blind, terrible mistake, big regret, not her fault, all my blame."

While Harrison Ford's first two wives, chef Mary Marquardt and screenwriter Melissa Mathison, were of a similar age, his third was more than two decades his junior. Calista Flockhart, best known as the titular leading lady in legal dramedy "Ally McBeal," walked down the aisle with the Hollywood veteran in 2010. While the pair inevitably got tongues wagging when they first started stepping out in public in the early '00s, neither party publicly expressed any concerns about their ages. "It doesn't faze me," Flockhart told Hello! "Sometimes I even say, 'Wow, I keep forgetting that he's 22 years older than me.' It doesn't factor into our relationship at all. I like the way he looks first thing in the morning. It's not handsome, it's more cute. He looks like a little boy."

However, in a 2024 interview with The Times, she admitted that Ford's advancing years did come into her mind when they first met at the 2002 Golden Globes. "I didn't think, 'Oh, this is Indiana Jones,'" she recalled about the moment that would ultimately change her life. Christian Slater, who became an '80s pin-up thanks to the likes of "Heathers," "Beyond the Stars," and "Gleaming the Cube," certainly had an interesting meet-cute with his second wife, Brittany Lopez. After first noticing her while vacationing in the Florida Keys, he mistakenly thought she was asking for a much older lady's hand in marriage. While appearing on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" in 2013, Slater recalled how he was enjoying breakfast near a popular proposal site when he spotted Lopez, 18 years his junior, getting down on one knee (via TODAY). "I thought I'd just witnessed a nice lesbian engagement so I was coming over to say congratulations ... but it turns out it was her aunt and she was just trying to help her aunt capture the beauty and the romance of the park ... The next thing I knew we were hanging out in the Everglades."

The pair proved that they were more than a holiday romance in 2013 when they got engaged. And they didn't waste any time taking things to the next stage, walking down the aisle together later that same year. They now have a son and daughter, making Slater a four-time father thanks to the two children from his previous seven-year marriage to Ryan Haddon.

Responsible for making pastel-colored suits the height of mid-'80s fashion, "Miami Vice" star Don Johnson has quite the marriage history. He got both his first and second marriages — to women still entirely anonymous — annulled, and then he got hitched and divorced to Melanie Griffith within 10 months before getting remarried 13 years later. While that relationship lasted slightly longer — seven years to be exact — his longest by far has been with Kelley Phleger, a former nursery school teacher who once dated California governor Gavin Newsom.

The couple, who have an age gap of 21 years, walked down the aisle in 1999 and are still very much an item. When asked by People about the secret to their success on their 25th anniversary, Johnson replied, "Oh, we are just so in tune with each other that there's an unspoken like trust and kindness and respect with us. And those are the keys." Johnson, who has three now-grown-up children — Grace, Jasper, and Deacon — with Phleger, also shared how grateful he was to no longer be considered a heartthrob: "One day, I reflected on Elvis and thought, 'Isn't this kind of the way Elvis lived and died?'" he said, reflecting on his '80s heyday. "Not that I'm comparing myself to Elvis, but in terms of him not being able to have a personal life. So, I learned to manage it and vowed not to let it imprison me."

The dashing, debonair Michael Douglas brought a touch of class to roles in '80s favorites "Romancing the Stone," "Fatal Attraction," and "Wall Street," picking up an Oscar for his performance in the latter as corporate villain Gordon Gekko. And he became the talk of the town in the late '90s when he started dating another future Academy Award winner, Catherine Zeta-Jones. Indeed, the press had a field day when Douglas first stepped out with the Welsh star, who was later crowned best supporting actress for her turn in "Chicago," for the fact she was a quarter-century his junior. However, despite all the skepticism, the power couple are still madly in love with each other and recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Though, Zeta-Jones and Douglas nearly divorced after a brief separation in 2013.

Both parties have insisted that their age gap has never been a problem. "We're just very good with one another, we respect each other, and I never really feel that he's 25 years older than me," Zeta-Jones told The Telegraph. "I remember people saying, 'When you're 50, he's going to be 75.' Well, that's just maths." And during a talk with chat show host Jonathan Ross, Douglas showed he was able to see the funny side, remarking (via Express), "We joke all the time about when I reach my 80s and she's wheeling me around and I'm saying 'Whoa, where are we going?' And she will say 'Cartier darling, Cartier. It's your favourite store.'"
