Carl Dean's life away from the spotlight had many of us assuming he was the strong, silent type, and more than a touch stoic too, but an unearthed photo strip kept in Dean's army trunk for decades has given us a glimpse at his sillier side. Spoiler alert: Dolly Parton's husband seems to have been just as playful as she was. In late September 2026, the country icon's niece Rebecca Seaver spoke to Vogue about her work as the director of the Dolly Parton Archive. Seaver revealed that in 2024 she and her manager discovered Dean's trunk, which contained several sweet keepsakes from their longtime relationship. One was Parton's wedding dress and veil, while another was a photo-booth strip, which Seaver pointed out even her aunt hadn't seen in years, noting, "She was absolutely floored when we found it."

Seaver added that it was especially touching that the photo strip put Dean's fun personality on display, especially given how rare it was to even see pictures of Parton's husband. "People haven't seen many photos of Carl, and they don't really know much about him other than what [Dolly's] said over the years, so I think to see this really goofy side of him, and how happy she looks — her smile has never been brighter than it is in that photo — is so sweet," Seaver said. Sure is! She also hinted at the pictures giving a more accurate view of what Carl Dean was like in his day to day life. "It's just a perfect example of their relationship," Parton's niece gushed. Just when we thought we couldn't find the legendary lovebirds any more adorable.

Parton spoke about Dean's silly side on several occasions

While we only got to see the photos of Carl Dean and Dolly Parton after both of them had died, it's worth noting the "Jolene" hitmaker discussed her husband's silly side in her 1994 autobiography "My Life and Other Unfinished Business." In fact, she dedicated several pages to Dean's fun personality, specifically mentioning that despite them being seen together so rarely, he definitely wasn't shy. "He loves to have a great time and was voted wittiest in his high school class," she wrote. One of the ways Dean expressed that wit was by coming up with wacky characters.

"He will [spend] hours or even days working one up and putting together an outfit to try out a new one," the country icon shared. One was a "Goober character with blacked-out teeth and red underwear and a pillow for a stomach." Another was, "What he called the 'L.A. Doper.' He was this odd guy wearing Mickey Mouse ears and smoking a tampon as a big joint." Parton also recalled that her husband would stay in character for hours, even if it entailed having a cauliflower taped to his head or a Styrofoam wig head attached to his shoulder for an entire dinner party.

Naturally, Dean's antics would have everyone else in hysterics, though Parton clarified that that wasn't even his goal most of the time. "I don't think he cares if anybody else laughs or not. It's more for his own amusement than anything," she acknowledged. Well, at least Dean's adorable poses in the photo-booth strip finally gave us all a taste of his wackier side. Here's hoping at some point, the Dolly Parton Archive releases pics of him dressed as one of his many characters.
