The Canadian drama "Heartland" is one of those shows that never seems to garner much media attention, but it has built such a loyal audience that it may run forever. The CBC drama, adapted from Lauren Brooke's same-named series of books, first aired in 2007, and without ever coming close to entering the zeitgeist, has just finished filming its 20th season!

Following the trials and tribulations of a multi-generational ranch-owning family in the town of Alberta, "Heartland" is no stranger to affairs of the heart. But what about the real-life relationships of its long-running cast? Which young actor has recently announced their engagement? Which regular has found happiness at the second time of trying with a country music icon? And which relative newcomer has to go through two years of couples photos to find one that wasn't unflattering? Here's a look at the romantic lives of a dozen show favorites.

Amber Marshall and Shawn Turner embraced wedding planning

Amber Marshall has played horse whisperer Amy Fleming for 20 seasons and counting. She's been supported by her photographer other half, Shawn Turner, for most of that time.

The pair first started dating in 2010 when "Heartland" had been on air for three years. After an 18-month engagement, Marshall and Turner walked down the aisle in the summer of 2013 at the ranch they shared in Alberta's High River, the same town in which her CBC hit is filmed. "I'm a homebody and so is Shawn," Marshall explained to Hello! about the choice of wedding location. "Right away we thought, 'We're having it at home.'"

The bride, who invited several of her castmates, including Michelle Morgan and Chris Potter, to the ceremony, insisted that she took to the role of wedding planner like a natural. And the groom was no slouch, either, building the altar where they exchanged vows. And as with the TV show, Marshall appears to be in it for the long haul. The actor, who had to put on a wedding dress again for the ninth season of "Heartland" when her character tied the knot with Graham Wardle's ranch hand, Ty Borden, and Turner have just celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary.

Michelle Morgan and Derek Tisdelle can vouch for each other's parenting

Unlike her on-screen sister Amber Marshall, Michelle Morgan said "I do" in "Heartland" before she did so in real life. The actor married Derek Tisdelle in 2012, two years after her character, Lou, walked down the aisle with oil company owner Peter Morris. While the latter ended in divorce, the former is still going strong.

In fact, the couple is now parents to three children, Mara, Noah, and Celeste. In an interview with Parents Canada shortly after welcoming their first-born, the pair couldn't stop gushing about each other's parenting skills. "He is so cool and calm," Morgan said of her other half. "At those times when I am most frustrated and exhausted, he is always ready to step up and take control. He is very good at keeping his cool when Mara and I are both in tears."

In response, Tisdelle, who's worked as both a commercial pilot and a day trader, spoke fondly of Morgan's commitment to her new role. "I'm amazed at how quickly she eased in to motherhood," he added. "I can't recall a complaint coming from her."

Shaun Johnston still can't believe he's married

Shaun Johnston, another "Heartland" mainstay having played widower patriarch Jack Bartlett since the very first episode, has had wife Sue by his side throughout the entire run. Indeed, although it's not known exactly when the pair first got together, an Instagram throwback photo posted in 2017 suggests they've known each other since at least the mid-1980s.

In an interview with UP Faith & Family, Johnston revealed that he and Sue are now empty nesters but that they still manage to bring the whole family together on special occasions. "Of course, I always have to celebrate the birthdays," said the Canadian whose character eventually finds love with Jessica Steen's stable owner Lisa Stillman. "You know, we do dinners and such or maybe watch the big game together or something like that."

And judging by a heartfelt 2016 Facebook post, Johnston cherishes each day he gets to spend with his other half. "Me 'n my Sue out for a stroll on Knox Mountain over Kelowna (I still can't believe she married me)," the actor captioned a snap.

Things have worked out pretty well for Chris and Karen Potter

Chris Potter's "Heartland" character Tim Fleming isn't exactly the most reliable family man. The one-time rodeo champion ditched daughters Amy and Lou, along with their mother Marion, when they were kids, having also developed a crippling prescription drug habit. And he continues to cause problems in their lives when he returns with his tail between his legs.

In contrast, Chris has been a dedicated husband and father for decades, having walked down the aisle with ex-high school teacher, and mother of his four children, Karen Yuhasz in the 1990s. "My wife and I have an unspoken agreement that we sacrifice whatever needs to be sacrificed for the greater good," he told Your Teen Mag in 2012. "To a fault. We can go years without a vacation. We just enjoy the daily torture."

And judging by his interview with Digital Journal 12 years later, the Potters' efforts seem to have paid off. "Life is so good right now," Chris said before referencing his kids, adding, "They are grown-up and thriving, and they love their partners. Things have worked out pretty well for us."

Gabriel Hogan and Inga Cadranel love mixing business with pleasure

Gabriel Hogan played Peter Morris, the oil company owner who marries and later divorces Lou, across 112 episodes of "Heartland." In real life, he's been happily married to fellow actor Inga Cadranel. The pair have never been afraid to mix their personal and professional lives. In fact, they actively embrace doing so.

"We love working together and the funny thing is other than "Rent-a-Goalie," we never get a chance to," Cadranel told Media from the Heart in 2016. "I guested on his show "King" four years ago, but he and I didn't have scenes together. There actually may be a show (I can't say what it is yet) coming up where we might be playing husband and wife ... We've had the producers tell us that's their plan if the show gets picked up ... so fingers crossed it does!" Unfortunately, looking at the pair's IMDb credits, the show in question didn't appear to get the green light.

Hogan and Cadranel, however, have kept busy elsewhere. A little too busy perhaps, judging by what the latter said in the same interview. "I don't rest," she remarked about her hectic life as a thespian and mother to their son Ryder. "Funny 'cause it's true. My husband Gabriel is ALWAYS away shooting and I really avoid having a nanny for my kids."

Nathaniel and Jolene Arcand love publicly celebrating their anniversary

Nathaniel Arcand showed up in the first 16 seasons of "Heartland" as Scott Cardinal, the troubled teen-turned-upstanding veterinarian with an on/off romance with Lou. In real life, he has a much more stable relationship with his designer/artist wife Jolene.

Indeed, the pair are gearing up to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, an occasion they will no doubt commemorate on social media. In 2022, Nathaniel celebrated their 6th anniversary with a loved-up Instagram post. "I love you so much." Twelve months later, he informed followers they'd now reached the seven-year mark.

Little is known about exactly how Nathaniel, who's since appeared in several Academy Award favorites including "Killers of the Flower Moon," "Train Dreams," and "Sinners," and Jolene got together. Likewise, whether they have, or intend to start, a family together. But we do know that the former has a son from an earlier relationship, Griffin Powell-Arcand.

Cindy Busby and Christopher Boyd communicate every day

Cindy Busby's "Heartland" character Ashley Stanton found love with Kerry James' ranch hand Caleb Odell, but after drifting apart, they, too, end up heading for the divorce courts. In real life, however, the actor is still very much in love with her husband of six years.

As she explained to the "Hearts of Stars" podcast, Busby — one of several Hallmark Channel stars you might not realize are Canadian — makes sure to speak to other half, Chris Boyd, every single day, no matter how busy their schedules. The latter is also in the industry as a producer whose credits include the Sally Field dramedy "Hello My Name is Doris," Netflix young adult original "Sneakerheads," and faith-based show "The Baxters." And the pair aren't afraid to show public displays of affection, either.

"You're the absolute best and I love you," Busby captioned an Instagram post celebrating Boyd's birthday shortly after they exchanged their vows. In 2024, the latter took to the Instagram again to celebrate the former turning 41. "You are the life of every party and the rock in all of our corners," he gushed. "You're truly the best!" Here's a look at other Hallmark stars with gorgeous real-life husbands.

Kevin McGarry couldn't be prouder of Kayla Wallace

"Heartland" ranch hand Mitch Cutty has had several romances over the years, including with Lou and yoga teacher Maya. But since 2020, the man who plays him, Kevin McGarry, has only had eyes for one woman, fellow actor Kayla Wallace.

The pair first got together after joining the sixth season cast of Hallmark Channel drama "When Calls the Heart" and bonded over their shared love of music. In 2022, they shared the screen in TV movies "My Grown-Up Christmas List" and "Feeling Butterflies," McGarry and Wallace announced their engagement. Two years later, they became husband and wife, and in 2026, they welcomed their first child.

Wallace, who's had quite the transformation, recently joined Taylor Sheridan's universe playing Rebecca Falcone in "Landman," leaving behind the show that brought them together. But in an interview with Swooon, McGarry insisted that he couldn't be prouder. "I knew that she had that side in her," he said of her darker turn in the neo-western. "I saw the side she's doing, but she's absolutely killing it. She's fantastic. Everyone on that show is fantastic. I'm very proud of her. She deserves all of this and I'm also enjoying watching "Landman," too." Here's a closer look at McGarry and Wallace's relationship.

Alisha Newton and Trevor Best have put a ring on it

Alisha Newton joined the "Heartland" cast in 2012 at the tender age of 11 as tomboy equestrian Georgie Morris. And in news that will make longtime viewers feel that much older, the former child star recently announced she was getting married.

Yes, in 2025, Newton posted on Instagram that she and her other half, Trevor Best, were engaged alongside a loved-up carousel of snaps. "Forever my T," she later captioned a video taken at an engagement party hosted by her parents. The news shouldn't have surprised the actor's followers, though. Two years earlier, the Canadian also revealed on the same site that she and her beau had made another major life change together.

"Back in June, I purchased my first home with my boyfriend and have (not so patiently) been waiting to finally receive possession and move in," said Newton, whose credits also include young adult hit "My Life with the Walter Boys," thriller "Devil in Ohio," and crime drama "Murder in a Small Town." "I've also been DYING to share everything with you, but I tend not to share things until they are certain."

Michelle Nolden and Chris Szarka took their time getting together

Michelle Nolden joined "Heartland" in its 14th season as Jessica Cook, Lou's former boss who later becomes her stepmom when she marries Tim. In real life, the actor is wed to Chris Szarka, a TV producer she first met while waitressing in a Toronto restaurant. "Chris came in with a basketball teammate and ordered a lot of Italian wedding soup," she recalled to Streets of Toronto. "I remember thinking he was very cute and funny, and I loved that he was so tall." However, it took a while for the pair to get together.

Indeed, Nolden explained that following a serendipitous encounter, Szarka left a note with her coworker asking her out for coffee. Unfortunately, it was another four months before she passed it on. Luckily, they were both single and enjoyed a first date watching "Jurassic Park." Unfortunately, their burgeoning relationship hit a stumbling block when Nolden landed a cruise ship job that took her out to sea for six months. But thanks to letters and phone calls, the couple stayed in contact and picked up where things left off.

After five years together, Nolden and Szarka got hitched at a ceremony in Brantford before heading out to their honeymoon in Barbados. They now have three kids together, Alex, Joseph, and Michael, and in the early 2010s, they co-founded the Lakeshorts International Film Festival.

Spencer Lord is in a relationship with his best friend

Spencer Lord first appeared on "Heartland" in its 17th season as a rival ranch owner's son, Nathan Pryce Jr. He made an instant impression thanks to the Romeo and Juliet relationship with Amy. Luckily, the actor's real-life romantic life isn't so dramatic.

Lord, whose credits also include legal dramedy "Family Law," video game adaptation "The Last of Us," and Netflix rom-com "Voicemails for Isabelle," has been dating partner Jamie MacKenzie for several years. Like many of his castmates, the Canadian has no qualms about telling the world exactly how loved-up he feels.

In 2024, for example, Lord celebrated MacKenzie's birthday with an Instagram tribute that he captioned, "To a partner who gives and gives and gives. Who is a consummate human being. Whom I deeply love and who is my very best friend. Happy bday Jimbo."

Victoria Pratt inspires Trace Adkins

Victoria Pratt enjoyed a five-year run in the "Heartland" world in the mid-2010s, playing Casey McMurtry, a one-time professional barrel racer who forges a romance with Tim. In real life, the Canadian has been married twice. Firstly to award-winning director T.J. Scott for 16 years, and then to country music star Trace Adkins.

They met shooting the 2013 movie "The Virginian", and the pair exchanged vows in a New Orleans ceremony six years later. Adkins, who'd been married and divorced three times previously, has often shouted from the rooftops about their relationship, telling People in the summer of 2021 that his wife influenced his 17th studio effort "The Way I Wanna Go": "I can't take all the credit. She's my muse."

"I can't even begin to explain what a difference she's made in my life," Adkins gushed in the same interview. "She rejuvenated me and inspired me to take whatever time I have left and make the most of it ... and then just make the best music that I can make."

Madison Cheeatow found love with an entrepreneur

Madison Cheeatow joined the "Heartland" cast in 2013 as tenacious bronc rider Jade Virani and became a regular in the next four seasons, with her character's most notable love interest being Clay McMurtry. Her screen time significantly reduced, by which point she was married.

In 2018, Cheeatow walked down the aisle with Chris Spoke, a partner in real estate firm Toronto Standard and founder of software development studio August. The pair have a shared sense of humor, judging by the anniversary post the actor uploaded to Instagram in 2022. "4 years married and I had to go back over 2 years to find a (somewhat) decent photo of us... SAD," she captioned a black and white snap.

Cheeatow and Spoke also have three children together, one of whom has already built up an impressive filmography while she was still a toddler. In 2020, the couple's first-born Isla Margo appeared alongside her mom in not just one but three short films: "Heartbreaker," "Anna," and "Intro."
