Taylor Swift Earned A Wedding Crasher Reputation With The Kennedys Thanks To Her Ex
Somewhere between her relationship with Joe Jonas and her fairytale wedding to Travis Kelce, it's easy to forget that Taylor Swift once dated a member of the illustrious Kennedy family during a lesser-known chapter of her storied love life. In 2012, she had a brief summer fling with Robert F. Kennedy's grandson, Conor Kennedy — when he was 18 and she was 22 — after developing a strange fascination with the famous political clan. But it wasn't their four-year age gap that had people buzzing; rather, a wedding crashing incident ended up being the highlight of the fledgling couple's short-lived romance. While speaking to the Boston Herald, Victoria Gifford Kennedy, mother of Conor's late cousin, Kyle Kennedy, publicly accused Swift of showing up uninvited to her daughter's wedding, despite the singer allegedly being told she wasn't welcome.
Although Conor was invited, he reportedly wanted to bring Swift as his date and asked Victoria for her permission at the last minute. But the bride's mother, fearing that Swift's presence might overshadow the wedding, politely said no. "I responded with a very clear 'Please do not come," recalled Victoria, as quoted by People. And yet they still showed up. "I personally went up to Ms. Swift, whose entrance distracted the entire event, politely introduced myself to her and asked her as nicely as I could to leave," according to Victoria. But she claimed Swift just ignored her: "It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me." However, the pop star's representative Paula Erickson denied the allegations, clarifying to the Boston Herald that Swift's presence at the event had, in fact, been welcome. "Taylor was invited to the wedding and the bride thanked her profusely for being there," Erickson claimed in a brief but firm statement to the outlet.
Taylor Swift was confused by the whole wedding debacle
Unfortunately, the drama didn't end there; Kathie Lee Gifford, Kyle Kennedy's step-grandmother, who was also in attendance at the wedding, disclosed that she personally witnessed the awkward confrontation between Taylor Swift and Victoria Gifford Kennedy. She confirmed that the reason Victoria didn't want the Grammy winner there wasn't because she had anything personal against her. Instead, "[It was] a beautiful sit-down dinner that had been planned for months," stressed Gifford, who relayed what happened next after Swift was asked to leave. "I was out in the hallway, she [Taylor] was waiting, standing around, and he [Conor Kennedy] came out and took her by the hand and they left," Gifford shared on the "Today" show (via CBS News), adding, "So I didn't know there was any drama going on at the time, until I spoke to Vicki."
To be fair, it didn't seem as though the pop star was trying to force her way in. In fact, as Gifford told her "Today" show co-host, Hoda Kotb, "I'm not sure she didn't know she wasn't invited." Swift, who ended up splitting from Conor shortly after this infamous incident, didn't confirm or deny Victoria's claims when asked to share her side of the story. "I have no idea what happened there," she responded in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone. "I think that story was based on the biggest misunderstanding," Swift added. "'Cause I would never knowingly show up somewhere that I thought I wasn't invited to. And I would never want to upstage anybody."
