Romantic partnerships between stars — and the peaks and valleys they experience — are always a hot topic in today's celebrity-focused culture. Whether it's Kylie Jenner reportedly putting pressure on Timothée Chalamet to pop the question or "SNL" alum Pete Davidson becoming the ultimate modern celebrity boyfriend, the dating lives of Hollywood A-listers are a non-stop source of tabloid and social media fodder. During the late 1980s and early '90s, though, few stars generated as much intrigue as Michael Douglas.

Like Warren Beatty before him, Douglas became known as much for his prowess with the opposite sex as his star power on the screen. He may have been married at the time — his current marriage to "Wednesday" star Catherine Zeta-Jones dates back to 2000 — but his proverbial black book remains one of Tinseltown's most legendary. The legend has only grown since the release of his 2026 memoir, "One Helluva Ride," in which the two-time Oscar winner pulled no punches when discussing his love life.

From steamy on-set affairs with famous co-stars to early romances with noteworthy women, here's a non-exhaustive look at the "Wall Street" star's dating track record over the years.

Michael Douglas had a relationship with socialite Nancy Pfister, who was later killed

Long before his 1970s television success and '80s superstar turn, Michael Douglas famously lived in a California commune. In his book, the actor recalled dating a girl from upstate named Kathy, but their relationship didn't work out as they were both unfaithful. Douglas added that they reunited a decade later, but it ended when Aspen socialite and heiress Nancy Pfister injected herself into the mix.

Recalling a fateful encounter involving Pfister and Kathy, Douglas wrote (via Archive.org), "Nancy walked in. She had come all the way from Aspen to surprise me. Even when she realized I was there with Kathy, Nancy was not going to be denied. She went into my bedroom, took off her clothes, crawled into my bed, and stayed there. You know how possession is nine-tenths of the law? Nancy had claimed possession of my bed." Douglas added: "In the end, Kathy left, and I spent the evening with Nancy. That was the last I saw of Kathy."

Pfister has since been described in media coverage as Douglas' ex-fiancée, and she was also linked to Jack Nicholson. Sadly, she's now remembered for being the victim of a 2014 murder at the hands of William "Trey" Styler III, who had feuded with Pfister over rent when he and his wife were leasing Pfister's home.

He reportedly dated model and friend Pam Barkentin after college

Another woman who reportedly knew and dated Michael Douglas when he was younger was model Pam Barkentin, daughter of model Jessica Patton. According to Barkentin (via a 2022 interview on "Oh Brother, Not Another Podcast!"), her mother and Douglas' mother, actor Diana Douglas, were roommates at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and she and Douglas were "very good friends." They even had a birthday party together amid the proximity of their respective milestones, per Barkentin.

"Later, we dated when he got out of school in Santa Barbara. I was already modeling," Barkentin claimed on the podcast. As she tells it, Douglas' father, honorary Oscar-winner Kirk Douglas, got them tickets to see Barbra Streisand's "Funny Girl" around their 21st birthday. Added Barkentin (who went on to make a name for herself as a photographer): "I guess we were about 23; we started dating for about a year. And then we've stayed in touch."

The spark with longtime love Brenda Vaccaro was immediately obvious

One of the more prominent romances of Michael Douglas' life began during his earlier days in Hollywood with actor Brenda Vaccaro. The two met on the 1971 Anthony Newley-directed drama film "Summertree," after which they became a couple. "On that picture is where I met and fell in love with Brenda Vaccaro. Brenda had large, dark eyes and an hourglass shape. She was a classic Italian American beauty with a spicy New York edge to her," Douglas wrote in his memoir (via Archive.org).

"She was the whole package—she was a talented and respected actress; she was funny; and she had a great sexy voice," he added. According to Douglas, "The sparks flew with Brenda during the auditions." As a result, she beat out a plethora of talented women — including Linda Ronstadt, per Douglas — for the role of Vanetta in the film. "The chemistry between Brenda and me was undeniable," said Douglas.

Douglas and Vaccaro were an item for several years and eventually got engaged. Alas, their would-be marriage was not to be. During an October 2026 appearance on "The Tom & Mickey Show," Vaccaro revealed that she ultimately fell in love with somebody else, bringing an end to their romance. Vaccaro has been married to Guy Hector since 1986.

Michael Douglas' marriage to Diandra Luker began in a whirlwind fashion

Michael Douglas first met Diandra Luker — the daughter of a foreign diplomat — in 1977 when the two were both in Washington, D.C. for the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter. The actor first laid eyes on her during a concert at the Kennedy Center and, in short order, fireworks flew between them. "After the concert, there was a reception upstairs to meet the president, and I looked across the room," Douglas recalled in a 1979 interview with Rolling Stone. "I saw Diandra and asked her to marry me three weeks later, and we got married two months after that."

The two went on to have a son, Cameron Douglas, and they remained together until 1995. However, their marriage was reportedly plagued by Douglas' infidelity. "The other women were difficult to deal with," Luker said in 1994, via People. The outlet noted that Douglas and Luker separated and reunited multiple times and often lived in separate cities as they accumulated homes across the globe.

Their divorce cost Douglas millions; it was finalized in 2000, five years after the split, and Luker received an estimated $45 million settlement and shares of their properties, including an estate on Mallorca, Spain. She has been married to the Earl of Dartmouth, William Legge, since 2025.

He had an affair with Kathleen Turner on Romancing the Stone

Perhaps the biggest revelation to come out of "One Helluva Ride" was that Michael Douglas and his "Romancing the Stone" co-star Kathleen Turner had an on-set romance. "Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature. I instantly liked her, and we were immediately attracted to each other," Douglas confessed in his book (via Archive.org).

For years, fans had speculated about whether the amazing on-screen chemistry between Douglas and Turner in the 1984 film owed something to some greater, more intimate connection off-camera. While both performers confessed to a level of magnetism between them, no admission of an affair came until Douglas finally spilled the beans in his memoir. "The truth is that during the production of 'Romancing the Stone,' Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship," he wrote.

Their torrid affair was doused, however, when Douglas' wife, Diandra Luker, and their son, Cameron, paid a visit to the set. The actors ended their affair, and Douglas reunited with his family, despite marital issues with Luker: "I did it for Cameron." Nevertheless, Douglas and Turner worked together again on 1985's "The Jewel of the Nile" and 1989's "The War of the Roses." Turner married Jay Weiss in 1984, remaining with him for more than two decades.

He also briefly dated film writer Diane Thomas

Kathleen Turner wasn't the only woman from Michael Douglas' "Romancing the Stone" era to become romantically involved with him. Diane Thomas created the film's characters, world, and story while working as a cocktail waitress in Southern California. When her original script was sold for $250,000, she became one of the era's ultimate rags-to-riches stories. Eventually, she and Douglas — who helped bring the project to life in addition to starring — developed a relationship.

Douglas recounted in "One Helluva Ride" that he and Thomas spent a lot of time together fleshing out the script for the movie. During this time, their relationship reportedly grew into something that went "beyond work" and, as Douglas put it (via Archive.org), the resulting affair "became the foundation of a close friendship."

Sadly, their friendship was relatively short-lived. On October 21, 1985, Thomas, her boyfriend-slash-actor Stephen Norman, and friend Ian Young were involved in a tragic automobile accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in a Porsche that Douglas had purchased for her. Thomas died on the scene, while Young succumbed to his injuries later. Norman, the driver of the vehicle, was later found to have been negligent and was convicted of vehicular manslaughter.

Michael Douglas linked up with Jeanne Tripplehorn amid Sharon Stone rumors

During the 1990s, Michael Douglas was infamous for appearing in films that featured torrid sex scenes. One such film — the 1992 thriller "Basic Instinct" — saw the actor getting hot and heavy on-screen with Sharon Stone. There were even rumblings that the two had formed an intimate connection away from the cameras while the film was in production. In actuality, he had become romantically involved with another of the film's stars — Jeanne Tripplehorn (or Helen from "Waterworld" to some).

According to Douglas, Tripplehorn had little desire to get involved with a married man, but he convinced her that he and his wife, Diandra Luker, were officially separated at the time. So, once again, Douglas engaged in a secret on-set affair with one of his co-stars. Apparently, not even those who were working on the film were wise to what was happening between the two.

"While no one seemed to suspect Jeanne and I were together, everyone did assume something was going on between Sharon and me. They were so focused on a possible relationship between Sharon and me, they missed the real relationship happening between me and Jeanne," Douglas wrote in his memoir (via Archive.org). The two ultimately went their separate ways after production, despite Douglas being ready to leave his wife for Tripplehorn at one point. Tripplehorn went on to wed actor Leland Orser.

He dated journalist Elizabeth Vargas after his marriage ended

Once his relationship with Diandra Luker had run its course, Michael Douglas was officially back on the dating scene (if he ever left it at all). One of the women he became romantically involved with after the breakup was famed television journalist Elizabeth Vargas, who wrote about their alleged relationship without directly naming him in her 2016 memoir "Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction." The two reportedly engaged in heavy alcohol use while together, which Vargas pointed to as the beginning of her brush with substance misuse.

"One weekend, we were in Vienna, where he was being honored. Afterward, we flew his plane to Spain, to his vacation house," Vargas wrote in the book (via The New York Daily News). "When we boarded, there was a big bowl of caviar, cooling on crushed ice, and a big bottle of vodka. We ate and drank it all before the plane landed two hours later ... I had never drunk alcohol like this before, and I took to it."

Vargas would later report on the finalization of Douglas' divorce while filling in on ABC's "Good Morning America." The network later came under fire when she failed to disclose their personal history to viewers. ABC expressed remorse in a statement to The New York Post (via TheWrap): "It was a mistake. It should have been disclosed. Elizabeth did tell her executive producer she had dated Michael, but he made the decision she should host the segment. George [Stephanopoulos] should have done it." Vargas ultimately married singer-songwriter Marc Cohn; they split in 2014 mere days after she completed her stay in a rehab facility.

There were rumblings of a date with actor-singer Martine McCutcheon

During the Y2K era, before he married a certain "The Mask of Zorro" star, a handful of outlets reported that Michael Douglas went on a date with Martine McCutcheon. There was a significant age difference between Douglas and the "Love Actually" star (whose pop stylings yielded chart success in the U.K.) — roughly 31 years, as a matter of fact. But the two were nonetheless rumored to at least have explored their romantic possibilities.

In a 2000 interview with The Mirror (via The Free Library), McCutcheon revealed a one-time dinner date at Bluebird in Chelsea with Douglas right before he met his current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones. "He was fascinated by my accent," she stated emphatically.

A 1998 write-up in The Independent detailed their night out by describing McCutcheon as something of a seductress — a callback to her character on the BBC soap opera "EastEnders" — and sharply painted Douglas as a sex-crazed Testudine. In the end, though, a relationship did not emerge from the date. McCutcheon eventually married singer-songwriter Jack McManus; they split in 2024.

Douglas finally found his person in Catherine Zeta-Jones

After amassing a legendary dating track record, Michael Douglas finally settled down with Catherine Zeta-Jones in November 2000, marrying in a ceremony at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. By then, though, their relationship was already well-established; the Hollywood stars had met in 1998 at the Deauville American Film Festival in France. By the time she walked down the aisle, Zeta-Jones had already given birth to their first child, a son named Dylan Douglas. That said, their partnership has not been without its low points.

After welcoming a second child, daughter Carys Douglas, the couple navigated Douglas' widely reported cancer diagnosis and treatment and Zeta-Jones' bipolar II disorder. Furthermore, Douglas and Zeta-Jones nearly divorced in 2013. In the end, though, they realized they simply couldn't be apart. Douglas wrote in his memoir (via Archive.org): "From the second we separated, I never gave up hope that we would reconcile. I love Catherine in a way that I have never loved any other woman. She's my wife, my best friend, and my life partner. I could never lose her."

In 2026, Douglas and Zeta-Jones are 26 years in and seemingly as unified as ever. However, she's apparently not keen to read up on his past dating exploits. "As much as I love my husband, when I'm tired at night, I have no intention of reading about him ... at all, but everyone else should," she said during a 2026 appearance on NBC's "Today."
