The Truth About Halsey's Past Relationships
Halsey, born Ashley Frangipane, happens to have a lot going on as of this writing. While the rest of us are sitting on our couches gearing up for yet another uninspired Zoom call, the star is gliding on the heels of her Collabs EP, which was released in July 2020. Beyond that, Halsey debuted her beauty brand, About-Face, at the start of 2021, appeared on the cover of Byrdie, celebrated a year of Manic, and guested on a track from MGK's critically acclaimed, genre-shifting album, Tickets to My Downfall. Oh, and she's also expecting a baby.
Halsey's baby bump debut shocked the masses, and effectively announced her pregnancy on Instagram in January 2021. The star's path to motherhood hasn't been easy, particularly amidst her struggle with endometriosis. Although it seems like she's getting verrrrry cozy with her boyfriend, Alev Aydin, she went through the ringer to find him — through high profile heartbreak, alleged abuse, and bad timing. Here's a look at the "Without Me" singer's past relationships.
Halsey is bad at (long term) love
When Halsey sang that she was "bad at love," she wasn't kidding. The singer is admittedly terrible at long term relationships. While promoting hopeless fountain kingdom in 2017, the New Jersey native got candid with Zane Lowe and Baz Luhrmann about her love life and revealed that she's a serial short-term dater.
"I have human relationships like songs," she admitted. "So, like I can have a human relationship for like 3 minutes and 40 seconds. Like, I'm really bad at long term relationships ... in the way that people can get to know me through like ... an hour-long record or whatever, I'm like the same way in real life. As soon as the human relationship kind of extends past like a day, or a couple days, or a couple weeks, that's when I start to, like, malfunction."
That's not to say Halsey's never had long term relationships, and she's even been able to experience some personal and professional growth from ones that didn't work out. She told Rolling Stone that hopeless fountain kingdom was inspired by the end of a relationship she'd been in for years. "Sometimes you're in a relationship for so long and you become a different person. You lose yourself because you change for that person," she said. "I put the seal on that relationship and fully purged myself of the feelings for that person at the same time as I finished my record."
Don't get it twisted: Halsey is – and always was – a proud bisexual
If there's one thing about Halsey, it's that she's incredibly candid. The "Without Me" singer is open about her difficult life in her music and interviews — from her struggle with bipolar disorder, her brief stint as a homeless youth, and her battle with endometriosis, to her sexuality. Despite the fact that the star's highest profile relationships have been with men, she's a proud bisexual — and she wont stop rallying against bi-erasure despite the occasional backlash.
"I still see people on the internet saying, 'Of course Halsey says she's bisexual. It'll help her sell albums,'" she told Paper in 2017. "I never came out as a musician because I was already out when I started making music. I was out in high school! I was in high school with people walking past me in the hallway calling me, 'D**e,' you know what I mean? That was just a part of my reality."
Today, Halsey is an LGBTQ advocate. Paper claims her single "Strangers," a duet with bisexual Fifth Harmony singer Lauren Jauregui (pictured , "might just be the first straight-up, same-sex love song on Top 40 radio." In 2018, she accepted a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Artist and revealed that she'd "spent the past year and the year before that working really hard to be a better representative of the LGBT community."
A drug-addicted ex inadvertently kick-started Halsey's career
Halsey didn't always pursue relationships for the right reasons, particularly when she found herself homeless after dropping out of community college. "I was definitely dating dudes I wasn't into because I could crash at their apartment," she told Rolling Stone in 2019. "I was having sex as a means of survival. I'm lucky that that's all it was for me; for other women I knew, it wasn't just that."
Around this time, Halsey was nearing rock bottom. According to Rolling Stone, "her phone service had been cut off," "she had no health insurance," and her friends could barely afford a $1 slice of pizza between them. For a time, she had just $9 to her name and was dating a drug addict, who inadvertently kick-started her entire career.
Per her Rolling Stone interview, Halsey's "junkie ex" inspired her debut single "Ghost." This song was the product of her very first recording session with a "music guy" she met at a hotel party. At the time, she had never been in a studio (even if the so-called studio was basically just a microphone in a basement). Not long after the session, Halsey put the song on SoundCloud, where it took all but an hour to go viral. By the next morning, "Ghost" was on the charts, and she'd been contacted by five different labels.
When Halsey broke up with a producer, it was bad vibes in the studio
When Halsey was rising to fame in the wake of her Room 93 EP, she was in a long term relationship with Norwegian producer Lido. At the time, the pair shared a home, and Lido was executive producing the star's debut full length album, Badlands. Their relationship ultimately crumbled weeks before Badlands' release under the pressure of the singer's newfound fame.
"When we met, I was nobody; things changed very quickly," she told Billboard of their 2015 split. "A lot of people in my life freaked out. I didn't have the chance to say, 'I'm sorry, let me explain.' It was kind of like, 'If you can't keep up, f***k you. I have to keep going.'"
Despite their breakup, the exes didn't end their working relationship, which caused palpable tension while the pair worked on Halsey's follow-up, hopeless fountain kingdom. "There were times when (Lido and I) really f**king hated each other, and we'd still be working on music," she told Dazed in a 2017 interview. "Everyone we knew was laughing at us, like, 'What the f**k is wrong with you?' And there were definitely some nights where we'd be in the studio and we'd go in hating each other and leave rekindled with some sort of closure. But I think for both of us, it was therapeutic."
Halsey won't kiss and tell with Matty Healy
Early in her career, Halsey was romantically linked to Matty Healy, lead singer of the Brit-rock band The 1975. On the surface, it was clear that they were friends, but the nature of their relationship was a mystery for fans, who searched for clues on the star's album Badlands. Many believed that her single "Colors" — which has the lyrics "your mother only smiled on her TV show" — was about the troubled rock star, whose mom was on the long-running British soap Coronation Street. Some fans even believe her 2014 EP, Room 93, was about a hotel room they stayed in together.
Though Halsey hasn't explicitly confirmed whether or not the pair were romantic, Billboard described her as "stymied" when they asked her about Healy in an interview. "We're both attracted to characters, and we saw that in each other," Halsey told the outlet of the singer. "I spent a lot of time watching him and he spent a lot of time loving being watched. But if you think he's the first red-wine-drinking, pretty-boy rocker in skinny jeans I've — been associated with, you're out of your f****ing mind."
As the magazine points out, she "paused" before carefully choosing the words "been associated with," which is, frankly, all the proof we need.
A ruby in the rough
Ruby Rose and Halsey are, indeed, an enigma worthy of its own episode of Unsolved Mysteries. We've got some clues, but we don't have any answers. Per the rumors, the singer linked up with Australian actor after her split from fiancee Phoebe Dahl. Weeks after E! confirmed Rose's breakup, she was spotted out and about on a so-called "fun day date," where she was papped with Halsey in Hollywood while grabbing lunch and catching a movie.
Of course, Rose and Halsey's outing caused a massive buzz on social media, but the evidence was slim. Did their matching snapback hats signal a real romantic relationship in the bizarre way couples tend to accidentally look like each other? What about those heart emojis Halsey sent Rose on Twitter a few months prior? Was that a genuine flirt, forever caught in the social network's rumor mill?
All we know is that in 2018, three years after the alleged date, Halsey recited a poem she wrote for Rose and boldly told Hit Network, "Ruby's like poetry already." A rose by any other name is apparently still a wildly gorgeous Australian star with a complicated love life of her own.
Halsey won't forget Machine Gun Kelly any time soon
The degree to which Machine Gun Kelly and Halsey were romantically involved is unclear. All we know is that it happened, and MGK was the one to spill the beans in the midst of his feud with G-Eazy and Eminem.
According to NME, the pair reportedly dated sometime in 2017. The following year, Eminem released his epic diss track "Killshot," in which he claimed the Cleveland-bred rapper was "salty" over Halsey's relationship with G-Eazy. Cue a salacious appearance on The Breakfast Club, where MGK criticized G-Eazy's ability to rap and "do math," while bragging about "smashing" a litany of the rapper's girlfriends. There, MGK clearly stated — with zero opportunity for confusion — that he "absolutely" got down with Halsey.
That same day, Halsey curiously tweeted "how *absolutely* pathetic" with zero context. This led people to believe it was a subtweet directed at MGK. Regardless, this appeared to be little more than a tiny bump in their long-standing friendship, which included a stint in the short-lived Showtime series Roadies. A few years later, MGK tapped Halsey for a duet on the track "Forget Me Too," which was released on his 2020 album Tickets to My Downfall.
"I know it may seem impossible that we haven't already done a song together, because we have been friends since the dawn of time," Halsey wrote on Instagram of MGK. "Believe me ... Just seems like it's a meant to be type of thing."
G-Eazy should be sad
Halsey and G-Eazy's relationship was more than a relationship — it was a saga. The pair shifted from head-over-heels to hate twice over. According to Billboard, they originally sparked dating rumors in 2017 when they premiered their duet "Him & I" during the rapper's Bud Light Dive Bar Tour. Shortly after, they went Instagram official. Cue a series of joint performances and cutesy social media posts.
Things started to unravel in May 2018, when G-Eazy was arrested for possession of cocaine in Sweden. A month later, Halsey announced their breakup. Though they briefly reconciled, People reports that they ended things for good in October 2018. Halsey later heavily alluded to the rapper cheating on her during a shade-filled Saturday Night Live performance in February 2019. According to Insider, who captured an Instagram comment from the star, she also revealed that the pair had "an abusive relationship."
The only happy ending is that her so-called "heinous breakup" eventually led her to write her seven-time platinum hit "Without Me," the star's first No. 1 as a lead artist. The single basically played repeatedly throughout shopping malls and grocery stores for the entirety of 2019, meaning G-Eazy had to sit, listen, and think about what he'd done. According to Page Six, he was even spotted booing her song in a club.
Did Halsey pull the ol' switcheroo?
Following her breakup with G-Eazy, Halsey played old switcheroo — at least according to the notoriously gossipy British tabloids. Per The Sun, three months after G-Eazy started dating Ashley Benson, Halsey allegedly started "hooking up" with Benson's ex, model Cara Delevingne. "They've been having a laugh together," a source told The Sun, adding, "It's all very casual and just a bit of fun. Neither of them are particularly keen to be tied down and they're fine about seeing other people."
This alleged friends with benefits situation appears to be one of the many romances bred during the coronavirus pandemic. As The Sun states, the pair, who are usually buzzing around the world with their busy schedules, managed to connect while they hunkered down in Los Angeles and rode out the lockdowns.
"Cara has kissed her in front of friends and stuff. It's not a big deal for either of them," the source told The Sun. "It's actually just funny to them that their exes are together now, and there's no hard feelings."
Did Halsey break Yungblud's heart?
Sometimes relationships don't work out. There's no party at fault, no drama. Sometimes, everyone can remain friends. After her experience with G-Eazy, the "Without Me" singer undeniably deserved a gentle breakup, and that appears to be exactly why Halsey rebounded with Yungblud.
According to Page Six, Halsey and the British rocker, born Dominic Harrison, went Instagram official three months after Halsey cut ties with G-Eazy for good. A month later, they released their single "11 Minutes." By October 2019, after around eight months of dating, Halsey revealed that the pair had moved on. In a now deleted tweet (via People), she explained, "Sometimes. People just break up. It doesn't mean someone cheated or something bad happened or someone f**ked up. Sometimes. It just happens. Because life is constantly changing. And adults stay friends and move on."
As for Yungblud, it looks like Halsey totally broke his heart. In 2020, he told Rock Sound that his upcoming album was going to feature a song about the first time he "properly loved someone," had his "heart ripped out of [his] chest," and "it was all over the f**king Internet." That sounds like Halsey to us, but the singer is still in her ex's corner. That same year, she told Zane Lowe that she's Yungblud's "biggest fan" and he inspired her single "Finally // beautiful stranger." According to People, the pair sparked reconciliation rumors in March 2020, but nothing ultimately came of it.
Halsey caught Evan Peters on the rebound
The relationship between Halsey and American Horror Story star Evan Peters is proof that you can manifest success. According to Elle, Halsey had been rallying for years to get Peters to date her. In 2012, she claimed his AHS character made her "attracted to alleged sociopaths." In 2013, she tweeted a formal "Petition for Evan Peters to date me." In 2014, she followed up with a tweet, claiming, "I'm a f**king liar I'm so in love with Evan Peters I'm so whipped I'm whipped as f**k !"
Well, it finally happened. All it took was for him to break up with his longtime fiancee Emma Roberts. The pair connected around the same time Halsey split from Yungblud, and the Daily Mail broke the news after catching the duo "flirting" at Six Flags. Four months later, the pair's relationship went viral after Halsey posted a since-deleted image of them kissing in a photobooth.
Though the couple celebrated Valentine's Day in 2020, rumors of a breakup stirred the following month, particularly around her Sunday dinner with Yungblud the following month. She hasn't acknowledged it, as of this writing, but Halsey deleted every photo of Peters from her Instagram feed, which seems pretty official.
Halsey is finally going to be a mom with Alev Aydin
Halsey always had a dream of being a mother. In January 2020 — a year before she announced her surprise pregnancy — the artist told Zane Lowe that she wanted to "be a really great mom." Not long before that, the star revealed to The Doctors that she was freezing her eggs at the age of 23 after suffering numerous miscarriages and battling endometriosis. She opened up to The Guardian about her painful pregnancy loss, revealing it was the "most inadequate" that she's ever felt. "Here I am achieving this out-of-control life, and I can't do the one thing I'm biologically put on this earth to do," she said.
With boyfriend Alev Aydin, Halsey is finally on the way to realizing her dream of motherhood. According to InTouch, the singer was first linked to the screenwriter in January 2019, when Halsey took him to a Lakers game. In June 2020, they got matching tattoos. By the time Halsey debuted her baby bump, People reported in January 2021 that they had been "dating for several months."
"Halsey has been low-key about [her] relationship," a source told People, but it's "obvious" that she's "happy."
