Emily Ratajkowski doesn't want to discuss the baby's gender

New parents Emily Ratajkowski and Sebastian Bear-McClard have opted to stay mum on the topic of their baby's gender. Ratajkowski wrote an essay for Vogue on why they're steering clear of gender norms.

"We won't know [our baby's] gender until our child is 18 and that they'll let us know then," Ratajkowski wrote. "I don't like that we force gender-based preconceptions onto people, let alone babies. I want to be a parent who allows my child to show themself to me. And yet I realize that while I may hope my child can determine their own place in the world, they will, no matter what, be faced with the undeniable constraints and constructions of gender before they can speak or, hell, even be born."

Ratajkowski is not the first celebrity to vow to raise their children gender neutral, but Ratajkowksi's perspective may be different than her peers. "A lot of our life experiences are gendered, and it would be dishonest to try to deny the reality of many of them," Ratajkowski continued.

She also penned a personal essay for The Cut entitled "Buying Myself Back" that in part chronicled her modeling career through the lens of feminine constraints. "I will remain as the real Emily; the Emily who owns the high-art Emily, and the one who wrote this essay, too. She will continue to carve out control where she can find it," she concluded the acclaimed piece. Certainly Ratajkowski can later impart her wisdom to her newborn Sylvester Apollo.
