What Robin Thicke's Relationship Was Like With His Famous Father

Talented genes run in the Thicke family. Alan Thicke made a name for himself in the entertainment industry for his role as Dr. Jason Seaver in the hit '80s show Growing Pains. The series began in 1985 and ran through 1992. The actor enjoyed other notable roles in his career, including films like Raising Helen and That's My Boy. According to Bustle, Alan had three different marriages in his lifetime. He and Days of Our Lives star Gloria Loring were married from 1970 to 1984, and they had two children, sons Brennan and Robin. According to Heavy, he was married Gina Tolleson from 1994 to 1999. The pair had one son, Carter. Thicke was married to his third wife, Tanya Callau, from 2005 until his death in 2016.

Out of his three son, Robin followed the most closely in his famous father's footsteps. The singer-songwriter enjoyed his first Top 10 album in 2006 with The Evolution of Robin Thicke (via All Music). The biggest hit of his career came in 2013 with the hit "Blurred Lines" — can you even say that song name without humming the tune? The smash earned him three Grammy nominations, including one for Record of the Year. He has four children (per People) — son Julian Thicke with ex-wife Paula Patton, and daughters Mia Thicke, Lola Thicke, and son Luca Patrick with fiancée April Love Geary.

While Alan and Robin enjoyed plenty of accolades and successes in their careers, it was their own relationship that was the most cherished.

Robin Thicke and his father, Alan Thicke, shared a special bond

The entertainment world stopped for a minute when Alan Thicke died of a heart attack in 2016. According to People, he was playing hockey with his son Carter when he collapsed on the ice. Tributes from around the world poured in for the lovable '90s star, and Robin Thicke has not been the same since losing his dad.

In December 2020, the singer took to Instagram to share a moving tribute to Alan on the fourth anniversary of his death, per Today. In the post that has since been deleted, Robin shared a photo of himself and newborn son Luca along with a moving caption that described his relationship with his father. "Four years ago today, on December 13, 2016, my beloved Father passed away," he shared. "As I wake up next to this little guy his first night home, I miss my father so much, but I feel his love in my heart every time I kiss my babies on the head the same way he would kiss me."

The Masked Singer judge also expressed his mixed emotions on how he was feeling at the time. "I'm crying a little right now. Partly because I'm sad you're not here, but mostly because I'm happy that I had you to love me, guide me, and show me the way," he told fans. "I hope I make you proud. I miss you every day. Thank you Dad."
