Inside Kanye West And Lamar Odom's Relationship
The ladies of the Kardashian-Jenner family have dated a lot of famous men since their rise to fame and fortune — and for years, many have wondered why so many of the people who got involved with them eventually experienced a breakdown or career failure. Some have even gone as far as saying it's the result of the "Kardashian curse," which even Kylie Jenner claims exists. She said in a June 2016 episode of "Keep Up with the Kardashians" (via Hollywood Life), "The Kardashian curse is every male figure that comes and dates a Kardashian. Their life kind of just goes downhill after that."
It happened to Kourtney Kardashian's ex-boyfriend Scott Disick, who entered into rehab in 2015; Tyga, whose music career went downhill after dating the Kylie Cosmetics owner; and then there's Kanye West and Lamar Odom, who have arguably had it the worst after marrying Kim and Khloé Kardashian, respectively. The rapper is no stranger to controversy and has made some "outlandish statements" as Fortune put it, while the basketball star suffered a drug overdose in 2015.
The men's ties to the Kardashians have surely connected them forever. Scroll ahead to read about West and Odom's relationship and where they stand today.
Kanye West's music "saved" Lamar Odom
In October 2015, Lamar Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel after suffering a drug overdose (per USA Today). He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he spent weeks trying to recover from complications, including kidney failure and several strokes. During that time, the Kardashian family — including Kanye West — rallied around him. He eventually made a full recovery and it was later revealed that the rapper's music helped him get through it.
"There was a moment when Lamar couldn't really express himself and he couldn't really talk, but he could hear what we were saying to him," Kim Kardashian recalled during an episode of "KUWTK" (via Rolling Stone). "Kanye really felt we can cure him through music, like we can get him to talk. He would go to the hospital and he would rap and sing, and I think Lamar started to get his function back and started to talk once he started to listen to a lot of music."
She said the former NBA player had told her: "Kanye's music helped me so much. That's when I realized I could start thinking again and things were coming back to me and I could start articulating it." Khloé Kardashian added, "He's always like that. He's like, 'Kanye saved me.'"
Lamar Odom wants what's best for Kanye West amid Kim Kardashian divorce
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West sent the internet into a tizzy when she filed for divorce in February, per TMZ. One day prior to the news going public, Lamar Odom weighed in on the couple's split rumors, making sure to stay very neutral about his former in-laws. "I think it's very important to do the best thing for your mental health and our mental space," he told Us Weekly. "If that's the best thing for them, then they have my blessings."
The athlete officially split from Khloé Kardashian in 2016 and doesn't particularly have the best rapport with the Kardashians today. He also confirmed that he does not have a relationship with the "Donda" rapper anymore, explaining that he hasn't communicated with West lately. However, he hopes that changes in the future.
"I haven't been able to speak to him," Odom said. "I would love to though [after] what he did for me."
