The True Meaning Behind Doin' This By Luke Combs

Country music star Luke Combs always puts out songs that are close to his heart. Combs' emotional lyricism certainly differs from the popular bro-country acts of today (although there is always a place for party music, too).

The star's music catalog may best be known for his love songs like "Beautiful Crazy" and "Forever After All," that were inspired by his sweet love story with his wife Nicole Hocking. The couple met in 2016, became engaged in 2018, and married in an intimate Florida ceremony in 2020, per Country Living. Hocking is the subject of many of Combs' hits, as the pair continue to appear head over heels for one another on Instagram.

While Combs' love songs are beloved by listeners, his other tracks also hit home for country music fans. His song "Even Though I'm Leaving," for example, is a heart-breaking tune about grief and loss. Combs penned a song in 2020 about the COVID-19 pandemic, "Six Feet Apart," in hopes to inspire others going through the unprecedented health crisis. "People [could] listen to it and say, 'Oh, I'm feeling the exact same way right now," Combs explained in a BBC interview.

Combs' latest single "Doin' This" again goes deep, this time about his life's accomplishments.

Luke Combs' new single, Doin' This, shows making music was always his end goal

Luke Combs' song "Doin' This" is the singer's ode to his passion for music. The singer sets the stage with a long-time question he receives as a famous musician: "What would you do if you weren't doin' this?" Combs sings.

The singer goes on to confess that if he wasn't a chart-topping country music singer, he would still be making music. "I'd have a Friday night crowd in the palm of my hand / Cup of brown liquor, couple buddies in a band / Singin' them same damn songs like I am now / I'd be feelin' on fire on a hardwood stage / Bright lights like lightning runnin' through my veins,” Combs sings of his love of music and performance.

According to CMT, music without fame was Combs' reality about a decade ago in Boone, North Carolina. Prior to his big break, the outlet reports Combs worked as a bouncer in the bar below his college apartment. He reportedly auditioned with a mop in his hand for the tavern owner and earned the slot on stage. It turns out music was always in Combs' soul, as he grew up singing with his family and in his middle and high school chorus, per the Tennessean. The gig at Combs' college bar would be the start to his meteoric rise to fame.

Luke Combs' music dreams came true

"Doin' This" also touches on Luke Combs' success in the music industry today.

"At the Grand Ole Opry or a show in some no-name town / I'd still be doin' this if I wasn't doin' this," he sings. The lyric refers to one of his major career accomplishments — as Combs set a goal for himself in 2016 when he made his Grand Ole Opry debut to become a member, per Wide Open Country. The star became emotional upon fulfilling that goal in 2019 when he accepted that membership as the second youngest-ever member, according to the outlet.

"Doin' This" also represents Combs' growth as a top-selling country music artist. In a symbolic turn of events, Combs actually premiered the touching single at the 2021 CMAs where he was awarded as Entertainer of the Year, per Rolling Stone. No matter how great his success, Combs' "Doin' This" is his vow to the spirit of music above all else.
