Celeb Couples That Were Doomed From The Start, Based On Astrology

Stars, they're just like us. They fly on private jets. They make a million dollars for a single post on Instagram. They make the worst-dressed list after wearing designer dresses to the Met Gala. Okay, so they aren't just like us, but when it comes to relationships, they still (kind of) are.

If you've ever stayed up all night googling the astrological compatibility between yourself and your newest crush, then you already know how a wrongly placed sun or an ill-timed transit can make or break a relationship. The stars we know and love — and whose relationship drama we love to follow — might be richer, fancier, and have a better skincare regimen than us, but there is at least one way in which it all levels out. They might seem to barely age, but they can't escape their predetermined fate as told by the planets.

If you've ever wondered why or how some couples ended up together (um, looking at you Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian) and, more importantly, why some of the perfect ones (Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt) broke up, the answer just might be written in the stars.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

If you were a girl in middle school in the early aughts, then this breakup definitely broke your heart. We're talking, of course, about Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Per the Mirror, Pattinson and Stewart met in 2008 on the set of the first "Twilight" film, in which Stewart played a normal teenage girl who fell in love with a vampire. For years, Stewart and Pattinson denied their relationship (despite ample photographic evidence). To the relief of editors and the distress of tweens everywhere, Stewart finally admitted that they were together around the time the fourth "Twilight" film was set to come out. The admission, though, seemed to mark the beginning of the end for them. They officially broke up when Stewart was caught cheating on Pattinson with a married director.

But according to the stars (those of the astrological variety), they were never meant to be in the first place. Stewart is an Aries, while Pattinson is a Taurus, and their relationship may have been marked by the intense stubbornness of their respective signs. Plus, these two sun signs can be frequently out of sync.

You know what they say, though: Opposites attract, and that crazy chemistry paid off when it came time to shoot "Twilight." "We were young and stupid," Stewart told The New Yorker of the relationship in 2021. "Not to say that we made [the film] so much better, but that's what it needed, and that's what anybody playing those parts needed to feel."

Kylie Jenner and Tyga

Kylie Jenner and her ex-flame Tyga are another example of a pair that's just too astrologically different to work. For starters, Kylie is much younger than Tyga. The pair began dating in 2014 when Kylie was just 17. Tyga, meanwhile, was a 24-year-old father, per The Sun. By 2017, they had called it quits for what would prove to be the final time, per Cosmopolitan. "There was absolutely not one thing wrong with me and T," Kylie said on an episode of "Life of Kylie." "Him and I will always, always have a bond. There was no crazy fight. ... I don't want to look back in five years from now and feel like he took something from me when he's really not that type of person."

Kylie wasn't just younger than Tyga — if you buy into astrology, she was also just too different from him. Case in point: Kylie, a Leo, is fire, whereas Tyga, a Scorpio, is water. These elements just don't mesh.

Leos are energetic and love attention, while Scorpios are quiet and serious. Maybe Kylie wanted more attention than Tyga could give? Or maybe he was too serious for her? We aren't sure, but we can tell you that these two opposites aren't close anymore. "We're not friends," Kylie told Andy Cohen during the KUWTK reunion, per Cosmopolitan. "But we are OK. If I see him out or if I run into him anywhere, I always wish him well. I have no bad feelings toward him."

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney

Next up on our list of doomed lovers is Lady Gaga and her former fiancé Taylor Kinney. The ill-fated duo first crossed paths while shooting the music video for Gaga's ballad "You and I" and seriously dated for half a decade — all while Gaga's celebrity continued to rise. It goes without saying that Gaga is a busy woman, and that's reportedly why they couldn't make it work in the end, per People.

"We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared," Gaga wrote in a 2016 Instagram post announcing the split. "Please root us on. We're just like everybody else and we really love each other."

If Gaga and Kinney were truly meant to be, then surely they would have been able to work through some scheduling issues. A quick peep at their charts, though, reveals that they were never meant to make it down the aisle. Gaga is an Aries, meaning she's fiery and loud, while Kinney is a Cancer, a deeply emotional water sign. Fire and water are opposites, and Aries' fun-loving nature may rub Cancer's security-loving self the wrong way if any trust issues surface. We're guessing Gaga needs someone who can go "bus, club, 'nother club, 'nother club, plane, next place. No sleep," and Kinney needs someone who wants to stay in and binge "Succession."

Katy Perry and Russell Brand

Speaking of opposites, let's talk about Katy Perry and Russell Brand. Back in 2011, the comedian and pop star duo were the hottest married couple in town for all of a year. Their split was especially nasty, though, with Brand initiating the divorce via text.

Apparently, Perry's strong personality, to say nothing of her enviable career, was ultimately too much for Brand. "At first when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they're like, I can't handle the equalness," Perry told Vogue in 2013. "He didn't like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting."

That's where astrology comes in. Perry is a Scorpio — often considered one of the "most powerful" signs in the zodiac, per Bustle. Suffice it to say, she runs s***. Why wouldn't she? It's her tour, after all, so who else would call the shots? Certainly not Brand, who has a sun in the much less serious Gemini. According to astrologer Clarisse Monahan, this match doesn't usually last. "Though this can generate an exciting chemistry, the relationship might not be very stable and may swing between extreme highs and lows," she told Bustle. "This is not an easy match. It's tricky, but it's definitely exciting."

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

If you were surprised when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West filed for divorce in February 2021, you shouldn't have been. According to astrology, they were never meant to be a forever sort of thing. Now, that isn't to say that they weren't destined to get together in the first place, because apparently, they were. Kim's Pisces moon, Libra sun, and Sagittarius rising made her extremely compatible with Kanye's Pisces moon, Gemini sun, and Cancer rising. According to Lisa Stardust, an astrologer who explored the issue for InStyle, Kanye and Kim were destined to meet and fall in love because they had something to teach one another. What exactly they learned (if anything) is up for debate.

Astrology does tell us, though, that Kim and Kanye were meant to part ways on friendly terms, which might explain that bizarre "Donda" appearance. Kanye's 2021 chart contained transits that indicated "legal actions" (i.e., divorce papers), while Kim's hinted at a release of pent-up stress. "In other words, from Kim's chart, she's letting go on good terms," Stardust claimed.

Though Season 10 of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" was full of tearful shots of Kim admitting that her marriage wasn't working, these days she's more than moved on. We're talking, of course, about her rebound relationship with Pete Davidson. As for their astrological compatibility, that's another question entirely. Davidson and Kim don't have a ton in common in terms of their charts, per Bustle

Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal

Taylor Swift has a lot of famous exes. But in late 2021, the one on everyone's mind was Jake Gyllenhaal, thanks to the rerelease of Swift's landmark album "Red," which was rumored to be about their breakup and their ultimately ill-fated "twin fire sign" connection. Swift and Gyllenhaal are both Sagittariuses, and their relationship was as lively and hot as the sign itself. "Get two Sagittarians together, and they better have up-to-date passports and plenty of disposable income for travel," Merissa Brown told InStyle. Makes sense, considering that a source told The Sun (via the Irish Examiner) that Gyllenhaal once flew Swift from New York to London for a last-minute date.

That's more or less where the good times stopped, though. According to the new ten-minute version of "All Too Well," Gyllenhaal eventually called off the relationship due to the large age gap between himself and Swift. But based on other lines in the song, including Swift calling Gyllenhaal out for failing to show up to her 21st birthday, it seems like the real issue was that Gyllenhaal was just too much of a Sagittarius to commit to anything serious.

"If neither is able to be the pragmatic force in the relationship or set boundaries, they could get carried away by their shared focus on fun and thrill-seeking," Brown explained of the Sagittarius/Sagittarius dynamic, adding that in the end, they might just create "tons of enviable experiences all over the globe." Well, that or a multi-platinum album.

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt

Now we come to one of the biggest breakups of the past 20 years, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. Once upon a time in Hollywood, Aniston and Pitt were Tinseltown's "it" couple. Aniston, the star of one of the most popular sitcoms ever, was America's sweetheart, and Pitt was a serious actor who'd landed on the sexiest man alive list more than once.

The relationship, which seemed like a match made in Hollywood heaven, came to a spectacular, tabloid-worthy end when they divorced amid rumors that Pitt had had an affair with his "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-star Angelina Jolie. The rumors turned out to be true, and Pitt and Jolie soon married and started a family, per Glamour. By 2016, they were divorced. Then, in 2021, Pitt and Aniston were photographed chatting backstage at the SAG awards, per E!. Fans were hopeful they might rekindle their romance, but according to expert astrologists, that's never going to happen.

When it comes right down to it, Aniston is an Aquarius, and Pitt is a Sagittarius, two fundamentally different sun signs. According to a report by The Sun, they make great friends, but terrible lovers. Pitt has a fun-loving, impulsive nature which clashes with Aniston's intellectual leanings and private way of life. Long story short, don't hold your breath for a Ross and Rachel-style ending from these two, but chances are Pitt and Aniston will always be friends.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles

We probably don't have to tell you how incompatible Princess Diana and Prince Charles were for each other. Some blame it on Charles' love for Camilla Parker-Bowles, others blame it on the royal family's treatment of a young Diana. Then there are those who believe that pressure from the press, which Diana spoke about herself, played a role in their rift. But ultimately, if you check their birth charts, Diana and Charles had no business being together in the first place.

Like so many others on our list, Diana and Charles were a Scorpio/Cancer pairing, and that's where the real trouble began. As things with Charles deteriorated, Diana herself reportedly reached out to an astrologer to figure out what was going on. "[Charles] was a very different person from Diana," said astrologer Debbie Frank, who consulted with Diana on the matter, per Town and Country. Cancer and Scorpio can make a good match, but it was quite problematic that Charles had a moon in Taurus and Diana had an Aquarius moon. "[Charles' moon] is very stubborn. It's very fixed. It's very unchanging," Frank explained. "Whereas Diana had a moon in Aquarius, which is very people-oriented–someone who wants to move with the times. They were really very different."

You know how this story ends: Diana and Charles split in the dramatic, tabloid-worthy way that only two overly emotional water signs could. Diana went on to become a fashion icon, and Charles found a more compatible Cancer in his now-wife, longtime love Camilla.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez

We've talked a lot about couples that were too different to work, so now let's talk about one that was probably too similar: Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez. From the jump, A-Rod and J.Lo had a ton in common. They both love Miami, are used to life in the spotlight, and are native New Yorkers, giving them plenty to talk about. Most importantly, though, they're both Leos. "I understand him in a way that I don't think anyone else could, and he understands me in a way that no one else could ever," Lopez gushed in an interview with Vanity Fair. Therein lies the problem. According to experts, from an astrological standpoint, Lopez and Rodriguez were just too alike to make it work long-term.

Per InStyle, the most important thing in a Leo/Leo relationship is honesty, and that's where J.Lo and A.Rod fell short. According to a source who spoke to People shortly after the couple called off their engagement, Lopez felt she couldn't completely "trust" Rodriguez anymore. Though the source was adamant that infidelity wasn't a problem, the couple was plagued by reports of Rodriguez's phone calls with Madison Lecroy for months leading up to the split.

Luckily for J.Lo, she bounced back with another Leo: her ex, Ben Affleck. "A queen needs a king!" astrologer Courtney Perkins told InStyle. "The only person who can take on a dramatic Leo is an even more dramatic Leo."

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom

It is common knowledge that Khloe Kardashian has never been lucky in love. "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" began with the revelation that Khloe had met her match in NBA player Lamar Odom. The Cancer/Scorpio pair announced their engagement in 2009 — a mere month after their first date. Sadly, though, the relationship didn't last. In 2013, Odom was caught boasting about cheating on Khloe, per TMZ.

The Kardashian/Jenners and fans around the world were devastated on Khloe's behalf. According to astrological experts, though, if you know a thing or two about the stars, you wouldn't be surprised at all that the relationship ended the way it did.

Scorpio and Cancer are both water signs, meaning they are both comfortable expressing and exploring their emotions. Though they put up a tough exterior, when Cancer and Scorpio meet, they let down their walls and share a nearly spiritual bond, per Elite Daily. That bond is reportedly so strong that once it's broken, it's over. According to experts, as soon as Odom cheated, thanks to their watery connection, there was little to no chance that Khloe would ever take him back. A Cancer (that's Khloe) has trouble moving on once they've been hurt, and as soon as a relationship turns toxic or troubled, a Scorpio (Odom) gets jealous and suspicious. In the end, the breakup wasn't just written in the stars — it was also for the best.

Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande

When we think of whirlwind Hollywood romances, Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande's short-lived engagement is pretty high on the list. The duo met when Grande hosted "SNL" back in 2018. Within weeks, Davidson had dumped Cazzie David via text and was soon spotted all over New York City making out with Grande and posing for the paps. They quickly got engaged — an engagement which lasted all of five months, per Insider. So, why didn't it work? You guessed it, another Scorpio/Cancer match.

"Cancer and Scorpio can be an amazing match because it's so passionate," astrologer Courtney Perkins told InStyle. "They're extremely intuitive and tend to thrive on assured commitment." Case in point: it took mere weeks of dating for Davidson to decide to pop the question. "Two water signs together guarantee a deep, emotional bond, but also sometimes drown when things get too intense without a foundation to fall back on."

Evidently, the root of Grande and Davidson's issues lay in the fact that they got way too serious way too quickly. Leaning into the passion that defined their relationship meant that they zoomed past some of the red flags that accompany Scorpio/Cancer pairings. "Cancer can be clingy and temperamental," Perkins explained, adding that the eight tattoos Davidson accrued of Grande during their short romance is indicative of Scorpio's problematic approach to love. "Scorpio is prone to bouts of jealousy and possessiveness," she said. "I think it's safe to say they had a draining few months."

Bill and Melinda Gates

They aren't quite Kim and Kanye, but the general public was shocked when Bill and Melinda Gates announced their divorce in 2021. It was a surprise to everyone, that is, except astrologers. Melinda was born on August 15, making her a Leo, whereas Bill was born on October 28, making him a Scorpio. These two signs are polar opposites. Leo is fire, and Scorpio is water. Sure, opposites attract, but according to astrologer Francesca Oddie, who spoke to Express about the split, the stars were perfectly aligned for Bill and Melinda to end their marriage exactly when they did.

"Bill Gates is a Scorpio, and he's five degrees Scorpio, which is really interesting because we just had that big Full Moon in Scorpio," Oddie explained. "It was a Full Moon conjunct Uranus when we expected surprises, endings, relationship patterns, so it's really interesting that this Full Moon was on his Sun, and his marriage is ending." Transits happening around the time of the divorce made it especially likely that something major would change in Bill's life, she added.

Of course, things weren't helped by the revelation that Bill cheated on Melinda and had been investigated by his own company for his dalliances with an employee, per The Washington Post. That would be a lot for any spouse to swallow, but especially for Melinda, as her Leo sun makes her very proud and therefore very easily embarrassed.
