The True Meaning Behind 'Blast Off' By Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars & Anderson.Paak)

When Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak decided to team up as the super-smooth duo Silk Sonic, they ended up making musical magic together. Mars himself spoke about putting together their first album, "An Evening With Silk Sonic," writing for Apple Music, "We just wanted it to feel special," Mars penned. "Instead of trying to get too cute with the concept, it's like, what's more special than Anderson .Paak behind a drum set singing a song and me having his back when it's my turn, you know? And the band moving in the same direction? It was just like a musician's dream."

That dream led to songs like the retro love-focused "Leave the Door Open" and "Skate," which rolls with the romance, not to mention "After Last Night," a song that brings industry icon, Bootsy Collins, into the mix along with Thundercat. And then there's "Blast Off." While it surely won't surprise you to find out that the song is absolutely out of this world, it also happens to take the magic that Silk Sonic makes and the dream that they experienced while working together to another level. In fact, the tune happens to be downright trippy for a very good reason.

Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak are flying high on Blast Off

"Clouds are blowin', don't know where we're goin' / But we're levitatin' up in this room," Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak tell listeners in the first verse of "Blast Off," via Genius. In the unmistakably slick way that is already the signature sound of Silk Sonic, the two singers continue by adding, "All these colors just like rainbows in summer / Got us smilin' like our dreams just came true (Yeah)."

Unsurprisingly mentioning dreams just like Mars did while discussing their work together, it may seem like these two are simply reflecting on their music. That might seem to be backed up in the second verse when Mars keeps crooning while saying, "As we're flyin', stars are multiplyin' / Wе're up so high, we'd be fools to look down (Don't look down)." As the lyrics move on, the star notes that "Shapеs [are] turn[ing] paisley," which he's thinks it's "so amazin'." Indulging in that feeling, he admits that the "Destination [is] pure sensation startin' right now..."

While the pair are obviously feeling more than just a little bit fine, both Mars and .Paak reveal what it is that's truly causing their good vibes.

It's more than just music making Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak feel good

In Silk Sonic's "Blast Off," Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak are all about the funky vibe and good feelings. That's why, in the chorus, they have a suggestion, singing, per Genius, "Oh, let's tiptoe to a magical place / Blast off and kiss the moon tonight / We'll watch the world go crazy from outer space / Blast off into the sky." Depending on how you look at it, that could come across as romantic, hopeful, and (as has already been mentioned) totally dreamy.

However, there's one lyric that reveals what's causing Mars and .Paak to feel so good. In the pre-chorus, Mars tells everyone, "I took a little somethin' to get here, yeah, yeah." While that could be a totally innocent reference to, well, er, perhaps taking a spaceship to get into outer space, it's more likely that he's talking about drugs. That's apparently confirmed when he offers to share what he has, adding, "I got a little more if you're ready, we can have it all."

Mars then goes on in the bridge to describe what their state sparks, saying that "Into the sky," they're going to "Dance all night on Saturn's ring." He even invites others — "If you got some friends that you wanna bring, then come on" — because as he sings, "It's time to take this party up and beyond." It sounds like they definitely want to go (and get?) higher!
