The True Meaning Behind Get Along Better By Drake Ft Ty Dolla $Ign

Drake created quite a stir when he released his sixth studio album, "Certified Lover Boy," on September 3. Thanks to the fact that he happens to be one of the top rappers in the industry — which is reason enough to be interested in what he's up to — fans were also thrilled by the buzz-worthy songs he put out, like "No Friends In The Industry", which targets those in the music business, as well as "You Only Live Twice" featuring Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. Granted, that wasn't the only collaboration on the album. Ty Dolla $ign can be heard on "Get Along Better."

The second time these two have teamed up officially, the pair can also be heard together on Drake's "After Dark" while Ty Dolla $ign lent his voice to "Jaded" (which is uncredited but definitely still noteworthy). As for "Get Along Better," in the song, the two get soulful and honest. However, they're not talking to or about each other. Instead, it turns out that they're talking about a very personal situation that surely didn't go as planned.

In fact, things ended up taking a seriously iffy turn and while the lyrics could be fictional, they might also be referring to a certain someone — or rather, two specific people who might have had something to say about what went on between themselves and the star.

Drake opens up about a past relationship that ended badly

When Drake and Ty Dolla $ign got together to collaborate on "Get Along Better," the song ended up seeing the two get very real, very fast. "Hold me closer in these / Trying times, supposed to be mine / Baby / I need some help just like anyone else / Hold me closer in these / Trying times, open your eyes / Baby," the two sing in the first verse, according to Genius. While that simply makes it seem like whoever is behind the lyrics needs to lean on the person they're with when things get tough, there's much more going on here.

"You said you felt something for me (Talk to 'em) / I don't know when / Based on the signals you send / Based on the way you apologized," the duo continues as the verse goes on. Making it clear that the relationship wasn't going so well at one point, the lyrics note that even though she went to him to address whatever had happened between them, she "had the nеrve to defend" the "mistakes that [she] made at the end." Adding a little more honest context, it was apparently the fact that she felt he "was too invested," which is why she was "forced ... to go and pretend."

While that could have been how the story ended, when this relationship fizzled out, another started that may have been way too close for comfort.

Drake admits he moved on, even though it was 'wrong'

"Trust me, this ain't 'bout revenge," Drake and Ty Dolla $ign start off in the chorus of their song, "Get Along Better," according to Genius. Although that's surely all you need to know to realize that something potentially bad happened after the relationship that's being discussed ended, it also might be obvious that it was the person singing who did something iffy. That's seemingly confirmed when the chorus continues, "But now I get along better with your friend."

That's right, back at the end of the first verse, there's talk of the fact that "someone that's close to you reached out to me just to see if we had made amends." It turns out that whoever is behind the story in the lyrics — we have to assume it's Drake because of a reason that we'll get to in a moment — got together with their ex's friend, even though "it's wrong, I know."

So, who is Drake referring to? Well, we can't be totally sure, however, he did date both "Blood, Sweat, and Heels" star Melyssa Ford and Season 3 "America's Next Top Model" contestant Toccara Jones around the same time. The good friends opened up about what went down in March 2020 on "I'm Here For The Food," even naming Drake as the man they were both involved with. However, the ladies share such a strong bond, that they claimed no man — not even Drake — could come between them.
