Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters' long-time drummer, has died at age 50. The rock band announced the news on Friday, March 25, hours before the group was set to play in Colombia.

"The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins," read the band's announcement on Instagram. "His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time." The cause of Hawkins' death has not yet been determined.

Currently, the band is in the midst of a global tour. After their set in Colombia, the band was scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza Brazil on March 27, per CNN. But now, fans and band members like Dave Grohl are looking at how the show must go on by remembering the infamous drummer and his time with the band.

Inside Taylor Hawkins history with the Foo Fighters

Back in 1994, the Foo Fighters were formed by Dave Grohl, who had previously been the drummer for Nirvana. Grohl would become the frontman and guitarist for the Foo Fighters.

Three years into the band's formation, Taylor Hawkins joined the band as the drummer after previously being the drummer for Alanis Morissette's band, per CNN. Since then, the band and the relationship between Grohl and Hawkins was nothing but perfect, with Grohl declaring that Hawkins was his "spirit animal" and "best friend" during an interview with 95.5 KLOS.

"When you have a drummer like Taylor Hawkins in your band, I don't necessarily miss being the drummer because I have the greatest drummer in the world," Grohl told Anderson Cooper in a 2014 episode of "60 Minutes." "Taylor is a much more technically minded drummer than I am." But when Cooper then sat down with Hawkins, he was quick to also compliment Grohl, saying that Grohl never made finding his place within the band hard. But Grohl and Hawkins' relationship spanned more than just being bandmates — they were best friends.

Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins had a close friendship

It's not hard to tell that behind their tough exteriors, sarcastic jokes, and heavy expletives, there was nothing but love between Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.

In an interview with "60 Minutes: Australia," Grohl said he and Hawkins were always simpatico in both their music and their friendship. So, when asked if their friendship was genuine, it didn't take long for either to make a joke, showcasing their real relationship. "No we're just f****** great actors," Grohl said with Hawkins agreeing next to him. "This is the best role I've ever played: Taylor's friend," Grohl added.

But, while their friendship was chock full of jokes and laughs, they also had deep respect and love for one another. In an interview with 95.5 KLOS, Grohl opened up about his admiration for his best friend, someone everyone's now mourning. "Our musical relationship, the foundation of that is our friendship, and that's why when we jump up on stage and play, we're so connected because we're like best friends, and it's great."
