Much has been shared online about Hilary Swank's surprise pregnancy announcement at 52, from excited reactions to discussions about whether she's a bit too old to be having babies. The Oscar-winning actor, who welcomed twins Aya and Ohm with her husband Philip Schneider at the age of 48, previously got candid about her decision to put off motherhood to focus on her career. "There were a lot of things that kept that from happening, and so I can really take time to be with them," Swank explained to People in October 2026. "I know it's so different for everyone, but for me, if I had had a kid in my 20s or my 30s, I think I'd be a much different parent than I am now." While surprising, it's not unheard of for women to have children later in life.

In fact, the "Million Dollar Baby" star is hardly the first celebrity to experience motherhood in her 50s. Janet Jackson caught fans by surprise with the news that she was expecting a baby just shy of turning 50. In 2017, she gave birth to her son, Eissa, with former husband Wissam Al Mana. Despite everything the singer has achieved, being a mom is Jackson's proudest accomplishment. "The most important thing I've done, the biggest thing I've done, is become a mother, and it's had a beautiful impact on my life," she gushed in a September 2024 chat with The Guardian. Perhaps her only regret was not having kids sooner. "I wish I had two more babies!" she told ET in May 2023. But, "I'm just thankful God gave me Eissa. I'm very fortunate."

Brigitte Nielsen had her daughter at 54

Brigitte Nielsen knew that having another kid past her childbearing years was going to be a long shot, but that didn't stop her from taking her chances anyway. In 2018, at the age of 54, she finally fell pregnant and went on to welcome a baby girl named Frida with her husband, Mattia Dessi, after years of trying to conceive through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Recalling her challenging journey to becoming a mother-of-five, Neilsen confessed to People in November 2023 that, early on, her doctors warned her not to get her hopes up as her chances of conceiving were extremely low, "So when it finally happened, it was just amazing. And then there was fear, because I was such high-risk, being 54."

Like Hilary Swank, Nielsen was also shamed for choosing to have a baby so late in life. But it didn't change how she felt about her pregnancy. Before welcoming her daughter, the actor and model was already a mom to four adult children from past relationships — including her youngest son, Raoul, who was born a full 23 years before Frida. "You know how kids say grandmothers are the best? I feel like I have that mindset and emotion," Nielsen reasoned, in defense of her divisive decision. "I have the patience and that extra bit of love to give now, and I think it's because I'm a grandmother's age." She also felt better equipped for motherhood this time around, pointing out, "When I was a younger mom, I was often juggling being single, being on a plane, on a movie set. Now Frida comes first."

Diane Keaton decided to adopt in her 50s

Despite never getting married, Diane Keaton was a proud mother to daughter Dexter and son Duke (pictured above with the actor in 2017), whom Keaton adopted when she was in her 50s. For a long time, the "Annie Hall" star thought about starting her own family, but didn't act on that desire until a series of personal setbacks prompted her to seriously rethink her future. "A lot of things happened in my life that made me finally decide to adopt. One was, my father was ill. And he died," Keaton mused in a February 2004 interview with Lesley Stahl (via CBS News). "I also broke up from a relationship," she added, presumably referring to her on-and-off romance with fellow actor Al Pacino. "And I also had to take a long, hard look about what I was going to do with the rest of my life. So, all those factors."

Having raised Dexter and Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001 respectively, all by herself, Keaton never sugarcoated her experience with motherhood, describing it as "the most humbling experience in [my] life." This was part of what made it so special. "It's not easy. It's not," Keaton stressed to The Guardian in May 2014. "But I love them." Before starting a family, the Oscar winner acknowledged she could be a little self-absorbed, but that all changed once she had Dexter and Duke. "[It] changed my life and made it so much more meaningful," the beloved actor, who sadly passed away in 2025 at 79, told The Independent in July 2015. "It's given me a purpose other than myself, which is really nice."

Hoda Kotb didn't become a mom until she was in her 50s

Hoda Kotb always envisioned herself having children someday, but her journey to motherhood was anything but easy. Though she did eventually get married (sadly, though, it didn't last), the TV personality didn't fulfill her dream of becoming a mom until much later in life, when she was well into her 50s. The former "Today" host was dealt a devastating blow when Kotb learned that she might not be able to conceive naturally following her breast cancer diagnosis in her 40s. "I just sobbed," Kotb recalled to Good Housekeeping in March 2022 (via People). "I thought, 'Well, that's that, isn't it?"

But she still longed for motherhood, explaining to People in May 2017, "Finally I said to myself one day, 'Why can't I? Why not me?' I had this ache in me that I couldn't push away anymore." That very same year, at the age of  52, she welcomed her first child, daughter Haley Joy, with Kotb's then-fiancé Joel Schiffman, via adoption. The couple's youngest daughter, Hope Catherine, followed, again via adoption, two years later, when she was 54. Sadly, she and Schiffman called off their engagement but have continued to amicably co-parent their kids in the subsequent years.

Though she wouldn't change a thing about her journey, Kotb admitted to feeling some discomfort whenever people referred to her as an "older mom." "I kind of get an ouch, even though it's true," she confessed to host Jenna Bush Hager on her "Open Book with Jenna" podcast, in September 2025. But Kotb has learned to embrace it, conceding, "I am kind of sitting in the fact that I come with wisdom now."

Madonna adopted her twin daughters in her 50s

Madonna is a doting mother of six children; Lourdes, Rocco, David, and Mercy, plus twins Estere and Stella, whom she adopted despite the fact the pop superstar was inching towards her 60s. In an August 2026 Instagram post, the "Holiday" hitmaker sweetly reminisced about feeling a "deep connection" with her daughters after meeting them at an orphanage during a trip to Malawi in 2015. Two years later, she returned to formally adopt the twins, making Estere and Stella part of her growing family. "It's inexplicable," Madonna enthused to People in September 2017. "It's like saying, 'Why do you fall in love with the people you fall in love with?' [...] You feel their soul, you feel touched by them — that's it." Thankfully, her other children were fully supportive. Naturally, Mercy and David, whom the iconic pop star also adopted from Malawi, were the most excited to meet their new siblings.

"There might have been [a feeling of], 'Oh, we have to share you with more people' — not jealousy, but an adjustment," Madonna said. But Estere and Stella fit right in: "It's like they were always here. It didn't take long for them to get acclimated." Still, it's hard to imagine being a mom of six at 68 (as of 2026) is easy, even for someone as privileged and influential as Madonna. While speaking to Vanity Fair in Jauary 2023, the "Vogue" hitmaker got candid about her struggles with motherhood, confirming that she's still figuring it out as she goes. "Because, whoever you are, having children and raising them is a work of art. And no one gives you a manual," Madonna pointed out (via Page Six), adding, "You have to learn from mistakes. [...] And it is exhausting because there is never rest."

Naomi Campbell finally became a mom at 50

When Naomi Campbell announced that she was officially a mother, in a surprise Instagram post in May 2021, sources close to the English supermodel revealed that she was fulfilling a dream she'd been holding on to for many, many years. "She's wanted a baby for a long time, more than 10 years. And anyone who's surprised Naomi is having a baby on her own, her own way, and on her own timetable doesn't know Naomi Campbell," an insider disclosed to People at the time, adding, "Hasn't she redefined everything she's ever touched?" The fashion icon was 50 when she confirmed that she'd welcomed a baby girl in her adorable post, which showed a pic of Campbell cradling her daughter's tiny feet. Perhaps making up for lost time, she welcomed another child, a baby boy, three years later, when the legendary fashionista was 53, also via surrogacy.

However, Campbell has long been vocal about her desire to be a mother, sharing with the Evening Standard magazine, in May 2017, when she was in her 40s, "I think about having children all the time." Back then, the supermodel was in no rush. She also confirmed during a November 2018 interview with Vogue Arabia that she's always been drawn to children. "I love kids and always will," Campbell gushed (via The Guardian), noting that being around them brought her so much joy. As such, it was never a question of if, but when. "I always knew that one day I would be a mother," she told British Vogue in February 2022. And despite waiting a little longer to take that leap, she couldn't be happier with her decision, enthusing, "It's the best thing I've ever done."
