Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have enjoyed a successful marriage for over two decades, having tied the knot back in 2002. The couple waited to grow their family, welcoming Charlotte Grace Prinze in 2009 and Rocky James Prinze in 2012, but since then, they've devoted most of their time and energy to their little ones. In fact, they even stepped away from acting to focus on raising their kids.

In an effort to give them as normal a childhood as possible, Gellar and Prinze Jr. agreed to keep Charlotte and Rocky away from the limelight, and they've rarely been seen in public. In fact, even when Charlotte accused her mom of hypocrisy, she could not sway her. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, the actor recalled that her 13-year-old daughter had asked why she couldn't pursue acting when Gellar herself had been a child star. Her response was simple: "Yes, I was, but I was not the child of two famous parents."

Now that Charlotte Grace is in her late teens, she's still largely out of the spotlight, but the handful of posts she's shared on Instagram (just 15 since joining in 2024) reveal she's growing up fast — and increasingly resembling her famous mom in more ways than one.

Charlotte Grace Prinze wasn't raised with rigid gender stereotypes

Sarah Michelle Gellar has gotten the opportunity to be both a girl and boy mom, but as she told Momtastic in 2015, she didn't really see a difference, nor did she have a preference. The outlet asked the actor what it was like to welcome a son after raising a daughter for three years, and she quickly made it clear that the Prinze household isn't one with gender stereotypes. "[M]y daughter was always interested in both 'girl' and 'boy' things," said Gellar, revealing her inclusive parenting style. "She was like the princess that wanted to build stuff." Case in point: Charlotte Prinze asked for a Black and Decker tool set for her third birthday and got it. In the years that followed, Charlotte continued exploring a wide array of interests, trying her hand at dance but also learning jiujitsu at just 5 years old.

Indeed, the importance of equality is a lesson that Gellar never stopped instilling in her children. In 2022, when Charlotte was 12, her mom appeared in a Pride Month campaign and, as she told People, she had long made it a point to teach her kids about inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights. "[T]hey've always understood since they were little that some people have two dads, some people have two moms," she shared, noting how she's also encouraged them to be true to themselves. "[I] tell my kids that it's okay to take time to figure out who you are and what you want."

She's long been 'obsessed' with her younger brother

Charlotte Grace Prinze was 3 years old when Rocky James Prinze was born, but rather than feeling like a jealous toddler, she embraced him immediately. "My kids are obsessed with each other," Sarah Michelle Gellar told Momtastic in 2015. To showcase just how close her kids were, she shared an anecdote from that very morning in which Charlotte decided to spend her free time before school playing with her baby bro. "[Rocky] was like, 'Yeah! Mommy, you no come!'" Gellar recalled. "They just wanted to do their own thing together just the two of them."

That strong bond should come as no surprise, given how close the entire Prinze family is. After all, Gellar stepped away from acting so she could fully focus on her family. "They are only this little for a very short window," she explained to Yahoo Beauty in 2016. "I didn't want to miss any bit of it." She shared a similar sentiment with Parade in 2019, telling the mag that despite all of the amazing things she'd gotten to do thanks to her fame, "all that pales in comparison to bedtime" with Charlotte and Rocky. In fact, she's even credited her kids with helping her marriage to Freddie Prinze Jr. last over two decades. "You've created these beings and you're responsible for them," she mused during a 2022 chat with "Today." "[I]f you take that as seriously as we both do, it bonds you in a different way."

Charlotte Grace Prinze learned to cook early on

The Prinze family is a tight-knit one, and they enjoy myriad activities together, including cooking. Speaking with Yahoo Beauty in 2016, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared how the quality time she spends with her kids in the kitchen is some of her favorite. "It's one of those times when you put down the phone and you really connect," she enthused. "[G]reat conversations come from it." However, while both kiddos enjoyed cooking, it was Charlotte Grace Prinze who really took to it. As Freddie Prinze Jr. told People in 2019, his then-10-year-old daughter loved taking part in Thanksgiving dinner prep. "She makes a side dish, at least one, every year," he enthused. "She really has a joy for it."

In addition to cooking, Gellar also made an effort to introduce her kids to food at a more basic level to help develop healthy eating habits that would last a lifetime. "[G]rocery shopping with them can be such a great learning experience," she explained, noting how a then-7-year-old Charlotte and her 4-year-old brother often accompanied her to the grocery store or farmers market. "Pick out what you are going to eat together, look at it ... discuss where it comes from," she encouraged.

It seems Gellar passed down her passion for food successfully because it also translated to the kids' screen time. "Everything they watch seems to be all food-related," she revealed. "They love 'Cupcake Wars,' 'Chopped,' and 'Chopped Jr.'"

Her upbringing was very non-Hollywood

Hollywood may have brought Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. together, but the couple tried to give Charlotte Grace Prinze and Rocky James Prinze as normal a childhood as possible. For example, their faces were always deliberately obscured in their parents' social media posts, and they rarely made public appearances. Indeed, their day-to-day lives were pretty average and included experiences that most kids share. Opening up to Momtastic about Charlotte starting kindergarten in 2015, she revealed, "[S]he takes the bus." Other everyday experiences included spending time with classmates outside of school hours, even if Gellar did struggle with her daughter's burgeoning independence. "She had her first sleepover the other day. It almost did me in," the actor admitted. "I was up the whole night."

It seems letting go didn't get much easier with time, as Gellar shared in a 2022 interview with Romper. Charlotte, who was 12 back then, wanted to go to sleepaway camp for the whole summer, but her mother wasn't on board. "There's no eight-week summer camp," Gellar told Charlotte, explaining, "I get a limited window with you and you're going to be here." Ultimately, they found a compromise and allowed Charlotte to spend two weeks away from home.

Charlotte Grace Prinze was raised to be super independent

Sarah Michelle Gellar struggled with her daughter growing up too fast and had no qualms admitting it. Speaking with Momtastic in 2015, she shared how difficult it was for her to send Charlotte Grace Prinze off to kindergarten, revealing, "I definitely had a little bit of empty-nest syndrome." However, she was quick to highlight that the then-6-year-old felt no such apprehension on her part. "I'm having a harder time than she is," she told the outlet. "She's the one that's saying to me, 'Mommy, it's OK. It's just a bus to school. I'll be fine.'"

Despite her stress, that's exactly the attitude Gellar wanted to see because she'd long encouraged her daughter's independent side. "[A]s a parent, our most important job is to give our kids the skills that they need to be able to go out in the world and make decisions for themselves," Gellar explained, adding that she pushed Charlotte to develop her confidence "by letting her make her own mistakes and letting her learn from them."

Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. also lead by example. In a 2015 interview with E! News, Prinze Jr. revealed how he and his wife split their duties evenly to show Charlotte and Rocky Prinze the importance of mastering all aspects of daily life. "I think that that's how you have to raise children today," he mused. "[Y]ou want them to be independent and want them to see in our society that there is no difference between men and women."

At 13, Charlotte Grace Prinze still wasn't allowed on social media

Throughout Charlotte Grace Prinze's childhood, both her mom and dad shared photos of her online, but her face was always obscured by an emoji to protect her privacy. What's more, she herself wasn't permitted to use social media until she was well into her teenage years. Back in 2021, when Charlotte was 12, she did bring up the subject, but it was quickly shut down. "My daughter is definitely curious, but we've explained that these are our rules," Gellar told Us Weekly, noting that neither Charlotte nor Rocky Prinze were allowed to have their own accounts.

The following year, Gellar was again asked about her kids' lack of online presence, and she told "Today" she still felt they were too young. Luckily, a then-13-year-old Charlotte wasn't really fighting her mom about it. "[S]he also understands why I hold steadfast to my rules until the time is right and I feel that she's ready," the actor said. However, she was also realistic about the pervasiveness of social platforms, noting, "If you keep social media from them entirely, they're going to find a way to sneak it." That's why, as Gellar told Yahoo Life in 2022, "They're allowed to look sometimes when it's our phones."

Charlotte Grace Prinze doesn't automatically love all of her mom's work

While we don't know if Sarah Michelle Gellar would ever act with husband Freddie Prinze Jr. again, they may not need to because they've already amassed quite the archive of work. Many of their projects remain classics to this day, but that doesn't automatically make them hits in their kids' eyes. Speaking with BuzzFeed in 2019, Gellar recalled asking a 10-year-old Charlotte Prinze if she wanted to see the first few minutes of "I Know What You Did Last Summer." "She's like, 'No, Harry Potter's on," Gellar laughed. Luckily, she was much kinder when it came to some of her mother's other projects. The family binged "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, and both Charlotte and Rocky Prinze enjoyed it. "I will tell you my daughter is definitely a pro Angel," Gellar shared with HollywoodLife.

Similarly, Charlotte enjoyed her mom's 2023 Paramount+ series, "Wolf Pack." "She loves it," Gellar told Extra, noting she was particularly interested in the show's young male leads, Armani Jackson and Tyler Lawrence Gray. "[T]his is the type of show she would watch, whether I was on it or not," the actor mused. "I think the fact that I'm on it is irrelevant to her." However, there was one flick Gellar was adamant that Charlotte wouldn't be watching anytime soon: "Cruel Intentions." "I'm not sure anyone needs to see their mother in that movie," Gellar told HollywoodLife.

A 17-year-old Charlotte Grace Prinze was her mom's bestie and twin

As a mother, Sarah Michelle Gellar has committed to instilling her beliefs and work ethic in her children. "Discipline and accountability are very important to both me and my husband," she told People in 2026. That's why, from a young age, both Charlotte Grace Prinze and her brother were held to a high standard. "My daughter was a dancer ... And when she decided it wasn't for her, I told her, 'Okay, but you have to finish,'" Gellar recalled. "You have to see that out. That's important."

In addition to picking up her strong character and independence, Charlotte was also drawn to her mom's profession and began acting herself when she was just 6 years old. However, the similarities didn't end there, also extending to her physical appearance. Although Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have largely kept their children away from the spotlight, Charlotte has occasionally joined her mother at Hollywood events, like the premiere of 2022's "Do Revenge." Indeed, Gellar's daughter made a head-turning appearance at the screening, and the then-12-year-old looked just like her famous mom.

Since then, the duo has continued to grow ever closer and more alike. Celebrating Charlotte's 17th birthday on Instagram in 2026, Gellar called Charlotte her best friend and praised her, saying, "[Y]ou are the person that brings out the best in me." As one cheeky comment pointed out, the resemblance was uncanny, but not just to Gellar. "You look like if Freddy Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar had a daughter," they quipped.

Will Charlotte Grace Prinze's career follow her famous parents'?

Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't care what careers her children choose, as long as they give it their all. "I just want my kids to be disciplined at whatever it is they do," she told People in 2026. That said, there is one path she would prefer they not follow: acting. Even so, Charlotte couldn't be discouraged and, in 2016, the then-6-year-old signed up for kids' musical theater and was cast as cub Simba in "The Lion King." "[N]o matter how hard we have tried (and believe me we have tried) to convince our daughter to find any hobby but performing, she has shown a great love (and talent) for being on the stage," Gellar wrote on Instagram.

That passion didn't fade over time, but neither did Gellar's commitment to keeping her daughter out of the spotlight. "[W]e have rules in place," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. "[S]he can't be in front of a camera until she graduates high school," Gellar said, despite her daughter's protests. It's something the former child actor refused to budge on, even when Charlotte accompanied her to work on "Do Revenge" and "Wolf Pack," and the crew offered to give her daughter a cameo. "I'll never stop her from being on a set ... But she's just not going on camera while she's living under our roof," Gellar maintained.
