Monica Geller and Chandler Bing's wedding on "Friends" made fans of the show emotional, and it turns out there were a ton of feels for Matthew Perry's family as well. As his sister Mia Perry Bowick shared in the Netflix documentary about the late star, the storyline came at a very difficult time in their lives.

"The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding" parts one and two aired in 2001, and the episodes were a celebration of the friends-turned-lovers' relationship. However, at the same time the episodes were filmed, Perry was struggling with addiction, and in Part II of "The One About Matthew Perry," the actor's sister shared that the family had been incredibly worried about him. Perry Bowick recalled, "Both sides of the family came to the filming to watch them get married. It was a really big deal because we're all worried about him; we don't know what's going to happen in the future." Perry Bowick also shared that Perry had been in rehab at the time the episode aired, which is something Perry himself revealed in his memoir "Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing." In that, Perry shared that he'd gone straight from filming the wedding to rehab (via The New York Times).

In "The One About Matthew Perry," Perry Bowick explained that one of the things that made the wedding so heartbreaking was that the family knew Perry would love to find love and get married in real life. "To try to navigate relationships while also battling this crippling addiction is, I mean, I would say near-impossible. So I think the unspoken truth that we all were sitting with in some way or another was, 'Is this his wedding?'" she recalled. Sadly, Perry never did marry, and his sister went on to say that she had bittersweet feelings about the wedding scene.

Matthew Perry's sister saw real love in Monica and Chandler's wedding scene

While it's sad that Matthew Perry's family never got to see him get married for real, Mia Perry Bowick said in "The One About Matthew Perry" that parts of the Bing wedding felt real to her. "I was on set, and I remember watching Monica walk down the aisle, and when Matthew said his vows to her, the emotion in his eyes and everything was so real," she shared.

Perry Bowick also spoke about how close her brother had been with Courteney Cox, which only made the ceremony feel even more special. "Him and Courteney had such a lovely relationship and years working through this thing that there was so clearly actual love there. Platonic love, but love there, and it's a happy memory mixed with ... some sadness," she said.

As some may know, all of Perry's "Friends" co-stars were very supportive of him as he dealt with his addiction, and back in 2022, he told People, "The way the cast of 'Friends' helped me was they were understanding, and they were patient." He went on to compare them to penguins, explaining, "In nature, when one is sick or when one is very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up and walk around until that penguin can walk on its own. And that's kinda what the 'Friends' cast did for me." He also said of the impact "Friends" had on him, "Just the creative experience of being on 'Friends' probably saved my life." Perry's TV wedding might not have been a real ceremony, but in a way, it was the real deal. We can completely understand his sister's sentiments, and if ever there was a time to rewatch the wedding episode, this would be it.
