Plenty of Hollywood exes have managed to keep things friendly post-split, but Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello don't fit into that "Modern Family" category, so to speak. These former lovebirds have been pretty hostile towards one another since finalizing their divorce, in fact.
Vergara and Manganiello announced their breakup in a 2023 statement to Page Six, sharing, "We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives." Sure, they weren't walking down the road and holding hands a la Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom, but it certainly seemed friendly enough. Not long after the announcement, someone close to Vergara also told People of the split, "There is no drama." Vergara even reiterated that herself on "CBS Sunday Morning," sharing, "I have to say, the press was very respectful and very nice, and I thought that they were going to invent more things ... I was surprised." Around the same time, Vergara also explained to El Pais that the reason for the split was because Manganiello wanted to have children, and she didn't. "I'm ready to be a grandmother, not a mother," she said. Again, nothing brutal — but Manganiello didn't perceive it that way.
In a 2024 interview with Men's Journal, Manganiello addressed Vergara's comments, and said he'd always told her that while he wanted kids, he'd also be fine if that wasn't in the cards for them. "I swore to her that I would never leave if it didn't work out. And it didn't," he said. Manganiello also said he'd been made to look as though he'd given his ex an ultimatum. "That's never who I was," he said. Unfortunately, that was just the start of their beef.
Joe Manganiello called Sofia Vergara out in his memoir
Sofia Vergara brushed off Joe Manganiello's Men's Journal interview for the most part, telling Variety, "I've read a lot of things that I've said that I'm like, 'Huh?' What am I gonna do, call him? I don't know if he even said that." But, around a year later, she made another comment her ex would perceive as a dig, this time telling "Jenna & Friends" that one of the things that was a non-negotiable for her love life going forward was someone with a similar net worth. "Because if not, it's a nightmare, then they end up resenting you," she said (via YouTube).
Evidently, that was too far for Manganiello, and he said as much in his memoir, "Bloodlines." Regarding the baby comments, he once again denied their split had anything to do with starting a family, explaining that they'd decided against trying because of an autoimmune illness from which he was suffering. As for that "Jenna & Friends" comment, Manganiello said that "was a low blow knowing how much money I made when we first met versus everything I'd lost while she watched me battle for my life for seven years" (via Entertainment Weekly).
What followed was Vergara sharing an Instagram Story her son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, posted, which said, "Remember kids, when dealing with a narcissist, it doesn't matter how much you do for them. They will resent you for it and nothing will ever be enough and they'll always somehow try to paint you as the bad guy" (via Page Six). Manganiello told "CBS Mornings" he simply wanted to paint a full picture of his experience with an autoimmune disease and had no desire for social media back and forth. Only time will tell if these exes can become friends (or, at the very least, friendly).
