Kamala Harris Breaks Her Silence About Mike Pence's Fly At The Debate

California Sen. Kamala Harris means business. If there was one takeaway from the 2020 vice presidential debate, it was that Harris is not someone who lets people interrupt her. In fact, Harris' "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking" became an instant quote from the night. Her career as a prosecutor in California left her uniquely prepared to spar with Vice President Mike Pence over issues like taxes and the Supreme Court.

If there was another star of the night, it was the fly that also sparred with the vice president by resting on his head for about two minutes while he denied the existence of systemic racism in the United States. The fly became the most memorable moment of the night, with Joe Biden's campaign selling fly swatters by the time the debate was over. Jim Carrey returned to Saturday Night Live to portray Biden and the fly in one of the show's signature debate sketches.

While it seemed like everyone in the world had something to say about the bug, there was one voice that was notably absent — that of Kamala Harris.

Kamala Harris cracked up when asked about the fly

At the end of an October 2020 interview, MSNBC personality Rachel Maddow asked vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris the question everyone has been dying to know: Did she notice the fly on Vice President Mike Pence's head while she was on the stage with him?

Harris seemingly tried to keep it professional, nodding her response through tight lips. However, both the host and the senator cracked up, and Maddow followed up by asking Harris if she had any impulse to shoo the fly away. Harris gave a diplomatic answer, albeit through barely stifled laughter, saying, "I think that it's important that we kind of find a way, all of us, to move on." Harris encouraged everyone to "fly away from this subject on to something else."

Despite the professional answer, Harris' giddiness betrayed her and both women were clearly amused by the situation. To be fair, the situation was pretty funny, especially considering Pence reportedly had no idea it had happened until his kids teased him about it after the debate.
