Doug Emhoff's Daughter's Inauguration Day Jacket Has People Talking

The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States became not only a significant day for the political future of the nation, but a day where many sartorial choices were celebrated. Doug Emhoff is the high-powered attorney husband of Vice President Kamala Harris. He has two children, Cole Emhoff and Ella Emhoff, from a previous marriage. After Emhoff and Harris married in 2014, the kids formed a close relationship with their stepmother and started referring to her as "Momola," per the New York Post.

Harris does not have any biological children, but often brought her stepchildren out on the campaign trail. Ella — who is a textile design student at Parsons in New York City, per Town & Country — caught the attention of onlookers for her fashion-forward outfits. She gained a large following on her Instagram page where she showed off her bright, colorful knitted pieces along with her unique fashion sense.

Leading up to the inauguration, Ella was interviewed by Garage and was asked if she would design her own outfit for the event. "I want to, but ... my style and my practice are so different," she told the publication, adding, "but I think I might have to just make an exception because for such a momentous occasion, I think it does require a pretty momentous outfit."

Leading up to Inauguration Day, Ella Emhoff had toyed with the idea of creating something herself to wear for the event, but, ultimately, she decided to seek the help of another designer. In an interview with Vogue, which came out immediately following the ceremony, the burgeoning fashionista spoke about her collaboration with designer Batsheva Hay.

The two women had met online after a friend suggested to Hay that she check out Ella's fantastic Instagram account, which is littered with her vibrant knitwear pieces. After connecting on social media, the two decided to collaborate on a dress for the Vice President's stepdaughter. In preparation for designing the outfit, Ella told Vogue she envisioned an ensemble with "little girl" vibes. "I was going for something girlier, to embrace my feminine side," she told the publication. "How many times do you prepare yourself to attend an inauguration?"

Hay was more than thrilled to help Ella with her look, especially since it allowed her to experiment with tradition. "Women in politics often have these feelings of having to suppress their style or their individuality to fit into these boxy suits....," she explained to the outlet. "I don't mean that you have to rebel and stick up your middle finger to the notion of dressing in a way that's dignified, but for me, it was really fun to make a dress that fit the bill but was still unique."
