The True Meaning Behind 'Lost In The Citadel' By Lil Nas X

Fans can't get enough of Lil Nas X's music. That's why they've been delving into the meaning behind songs like "Am I Dreaming" with Miley Cryus and "Old Town Road" with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus. That's not to mention other playlist-worthy tunes like "Industry Baby" and "Sun Goes Down."

While Lil Nas X has earned the attention he's received for what he does both in the studio and on stage, that's not all that's piqued the public's interest when it comes to this particular celebrity. Just as many people are interested in his personal situation, and by that, we mean Lil Nas X's dating life. Fortunately for them, he happens to let his personal (and romantic) experiences inspire a fair share of his songs.

Lil Nas X was recently dating Yai Ariza, one of his dancers, per Out. But the star has also faced at least one romance that didn't turn into a happily-ever-after, though he did turn it into sweet music. At least, that's what "Lost In The Citadel" seems to be telling us with its incredibly touching lyrics.

One relationship wasn't so heavenly for Lil Nas X

Found on Lil Nas X's scene-storming "Montero" album, "Lost In The Citadel" reveals what really went on with a certain someone that the star once felt very strongly and differently about — or at least, he felt differently about their situation. "I rеmember when I mеt you / Thought the universe sent you / Thought you were someone I could vent to / So I hit your line, what you getting into?" Lil Nas X sings in the pre-chorus, via Genius, telling listeners (and that certain someone) that he was hopeful when the two first met. In fact, he was willing and wanting to open up to that person. In the first verse, he even adds, "My God, you're an angel / I only see you in your halo / I was hopin' we could stay close." But he then explains, "But we no longer sing the same notes."

Going on in the second verse to again note that their relationship wasn't meant to last, he sings, "Why I thought it was forever? / I only see you maybe never / Why I thought we'd be together? / When you treat it like whatever?"

Although Lil Nas X seems to now know that they're not meant to be together, he's also willing to acknowledge that it's not always easy to walk away.

He admits that it's sometimes hard to let go

"Tell me, are you feeling down? / Are you happy, do your dreams still seem inbound? / Tell me, are we finished now? / 'Cause every time you leave you find a way to come back around," Lil Nas X admits at both the beginning and the end of "Lost In The Citadel," via Genius, seemingly letting the placement of the exact same lines emphasis the fact that he's been stuck in a pattern with the person that he's singing about (and to). Indeed, he's not hiding the fact that he finds it difficult to completely end this romance.

In fact, in the chorus, Lil Nas X tells that certain someone, "I need time to get up and get off the floor / I need time to realize that I can't be yours / I need time to give up just like before / I love it how you know I'd only come right back for more."

Sometimes, admitting that you need to let go is easier than actually walking away, and Lil Nas X seems to know that well.
