Hayden Panettiere's Cause Of Death Uncovers Heartbreaking Details About Her Tragic Passing

Just over a month after Hayden Panettiere's heartbreaking passing, the Greenville County Coroner's Office has officially announced the beloved actor's cause of death. Sadly, according to their investigation, Panettiere died of an accidental overdose. In a statement shared with the Associated Press, the Greenville County coroner revealed that a mixture of several different substances was discovered in the "Heroes" star's system after she died. Some of those included medications for depression and anxiety, but fentanyl was also present. 

Their statement went on to note that the overdose was the sole suspected cause of Panettiere's passing, which had previously been expressed by the Greenville police department as well. They confirmed in a statement to Variety, "The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances." It's worth noting that the investigation has not yet been closed. As such, the Panettiere family has declined to speak on the coroner's findings at the time of writing. As a representative reasoned to AP simply, "The case is complex." 

Sure enough, as CNN previously reported, authorities are looking into the possibility of the former child star being given counterfeit drugs that looked like genuine medication. Panettiere's family opted not to comment on that either, with their representative stating at the time, "While we are all eager to find closure and better understand the circumstances surrounding her passing, we must remain patient and allow the investigative process to unfold." 

One particularly heartbreaking aspect of Hayden Panettiere's death is that in her final months, she attended rehab. In fact, it's believed the beloved actor left the facility in question only a few weeks before her untimely death. Further details about Panettiere's stay have not been divulged as of yet. Another sad detail in the coroner's report is that the "Scream 4" star was in Greenville for a happy occasion. Panettiere's dad told investigators that she'd gone there to celebrate what would have been her 37th birthday. Of course, the former child star passed away a few days before that could happen, her birthday being August 21 and date of death August 16. Making matters even more devastating, Panettiere's father also revealed that she had plans to see her daughter Kaya Klitschko soon after her trip to Greenville. 

Although he didn't expressly say so, there's a chance it would have been part of the birthday celebrations, too. Panettiere shared Kaya with ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko, who moved back to Ukraine amid the war with Russia. While Panettiere previously clarified that Kaya was not in Ukraine, it's possible that had since changed, as her father also informed the investigator looking into her death that the actor's plans to see Kaya were indeed in the Eastern European country. Unfortunately, until such time as the investigation into her death concludes, many questions will remain. Our hearts go out to her loved ones, and we hope they are able to find some sense of closure during an unimaginably difficult time.
