Peter And Madison Announce Split Just Days After 'Bachelor' Finale

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Bachelor finale and the drama that's followed.

The Bachelor finale may seem like it happened ages ago due to the fact that the drama just keeps on going, but if you haven't seen how Peter Weber's season of the show ended, beware because there are some seriously wild spoilers ahead. On the other hand, if you've already gobbled up every moment of the reality TV action (or don't care about spoilers because you just can't wait to hear the dirt), then read on because OMG this romantic roller coaster just keeps on going.

A quick recap: When one of Peter's final contestants, Madison Prewett, left the show early because she felt like she couldn't pursue a relationship with the Bachelor after he'd been intimate with one of the other women, he ended up proposing to another lady who had been vying for his heart, Hannah Ann Sluss. But it wasn't long before (shade-throwing?) Hannah Ann and Peter ended things. Then, during the finale, he revealed that he was again pursuing a relationship with Madison.

While the entire situation drew strong reactions from fans, celebrities, former Bachelorette Hannah Brown, and even Peter's family (more on that later), the pilot and the woman he ended up with seemed like they were determined to make it work. However, in another twist (that may or may not be shocking) Peter and Madison announced on March 13, 2020, that they've ended their relationship.

Peter Weber broke the break-up news

Just days after The Bachelor finale, which saw Peter Weber and Madison Prewett reunite in front of the cameras to reveal that they were back together, he took to Instagram to announce their split. After "acknowledging the incredible group of women" that showed up for his season and claiming that he "learned so many lessons" from them, he continued by breaking the news. "Madi and I have mutually decided to not pursue our relationship any further," he wrote alongside a photo of himself. "Believe me this was not easy for either of us to be ok with, but after a lot of honest conversations, we have agreed that this is what makes most sense for the two of us."

Before sending a message to Hannah Ann Sluss in which Peter explained that he "accept[s] full responsibility" for the mistakes he made during their time together, he first ended his thoughts about Madison by adding, "The love and respect I have for Madi will continue to endure." Apparently, she feels the same way.

Madison Prewett's announcement was surprisingly positive

When it came to where she stood with Peter Weber and what she was thinking about their relationship, Madison Prewett was pretty upfront during the entire season of The Bachelor. That's why it was no surprise that she also took to Instagram to post her own message about the split. "So incredibly thankful for this amazing journey I've had the honor of being a part of," Madison wrote. Along with sharing a shot of herself and Peter during The Bachelor's finale, she continued, "I have grown so much and am stronger than I was going in. I have learned the importance of acceptance, forgiveness, and grace."

Madison then explained that even though she and Peter are going their "separate way[s]," she "will always love and respect him." She even went so far as to call him "an amazing guy" who she's "thankful" for, saying she'll "always be [his] biggest fan." While Madison is a fan of Peter, the pilot's family members are probably fans of the fact that this particular relationship has ended.

Peter Weber's family will be... happy?

Peter Weber's tightknit family is surely supporting him through any heartache that he's experienced following his split from Madison Prewett, but that doesn't mean that they're necessarily upset that the relationship is over. In fact, they were very vocal about the fact that they didn't approve of the couple to the point where it even made host Chris Harrison feel "terrible."

Peter's mom, Barb, who faced criticism after the shocking finale due to the fact that she shared her, er, true feelings about the (seemingly mismatched) couple while also claiming that Peter — and, in turn, the relationship — would have to fail before he succeeds. Ouch. As for Peter's dad, Peter Weber Sr. fully admitted that he hated the situation and felt like there were already too many obstacles that would prevent any kind of happily-ever-after. Even Peter's brother, Jack, confronted the Bachelor about the fact that the pilot's social (and, yes, sexual) lifestyle wasn't compatible with the religious lifestyle that Madison leads.

While it's clear that Peter's family had clear-cut (and valid?) views on his relationship with Madison, they certainly weren't the only ones. Viewers of the show also had a fair share to say along the way and now that the couple has broken up, they aren't being shy about sharing their reactions.

Fans have strong opinions about the outcome of Peter's season of 'The Bachelor'

The Bachelor franchise hasn't had the greatest record when it comes to matching up couples who stay together. Yes, there are some success stories like Bachelor in Paradise's Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert as well as Carly Waddell and Evan Bass. But there's also the fact that Arie Luyendyk Jr. broke up with his fiancé, Becca Kufrin, to be with runner-up Lauren Burnham, Hannah Brown dumped Jed Wyatt after finding out that there was another woman in the picture, and Colton Underwood didn't actually end up engaged to Cassie Randolph. Now, Peter Weber has broken up Madison Prewett and fans were quick to share their reactions to the news.

"Not surprised," one Instagram user wrote on Peter's post about the break-up. "Madi stood no chance against your mother. I think you need to find your person on your own... and not allow your family to have such a large say in the matter."

Others were pointing fingers. While one person claimed that Peter "should [have] stood up for Maddy and told [his] mom to stay in her lane," another social media user felt like "Madi should have never signed up for this show! ... If you're that strong in your beliefs why would you sign up in a show with a Man that...dates 25 other women[?] ... [T]his was not the right journey for her!"

Let's just hope that both Peter and Madison eventually find a road to lasting romance with someone who truly suits them.
