Erika Kirk's Latest Instagram Post Feels Like A Subtle Jab At Usha Vance
On April 1, 2026, Erika Kirk used her Instagram Stories to share a throwback of her late husband, Charlie Kirk, the prominent Donald Trump ally who was shot dead at 31 in September 2025. Showing off their support for the president, Erika and Charlie hugged while donning Trump's signature red Make America Great Again hat. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Well, the issue is that she shared the picture just two days after second lady Usha Vance admitted she didn't own a MAGA hat.
In a March 30 interview with NBC News, Usha, who is pregnant with her and Vice President JD Vance's fourth child, played coy when anchor Kate Snow asked her about it. "I don't really own any hats. I think I have a Disneyland hat," she joked, adding that she's simply "not a hat lady." It was an awkward exchange that had the anchor swiftly changing the subject. Given how uncomfortable Usha seemed, we just had to wonder whether Erika wanted to send her a message with her MAGA hat picture.
Erika hasn't exactly been hiding her admiration for Usha's husband, JD. As many will recall, Usha and JD's marriage was on everyone's lips after the Erika photo that blew up the internet in October 2025. The two went viral after their rather intimate hug onstage during a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi, sending social media ablaze with affair rumors. Perhaps Erika is jealous of Usha, or perhaps she has political reasons to throw shade at the second lady.
Was Erika Kirk questioning Usha Vance's loyalty to the MAGA movement?
It doesn't take a lot of scrolling to find examples of Usha Vance wearing hats on Instagram. She wore a khaki hat during the Marine Corps 250th anniversary demonstration at Camp Pendleton in October 2025. The previous month, she rocked a blue hat during a volunteering event for the Special Olympics with her family. Those are just recent examples found on her own socials.
Maybe Erika Kirk's MAGA hat picture was a shady attempt to question Usha's loyalty to the movement associated with President Donald Trump. Some social media users have pondered similar questions. "Well, JD Vance was a never-Trumper before deciding it was politically expedient to become a Trumper so it's not hard to believe she hasn't been entirely converted," a Facebook user noted in an Occupy Democrats post that featured Usha in hats.
Indeed, Usha supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, while JD Vance told NPR, "I might have to hold my nose and vote for Hillary Clinton." JD has been open about his subsequent political awakening, and Charlie Kirk's widow seemingly believes his change of heart. After all, Erika and JD have become super close in their MAGAness. Usha, on the other hand, has taken a more diplomatic tone when it comes to the administration she's now a part of. In fact, she revealed in the NBC News interview that she doesn't always agree with her husband. "We have totally different backgrounds. We have different starting points for thinking about all sorts of questions," she said.
