Strange Things About Cody Simpson And Miley Cyrus

Most of us are just beginning to process Miley Cyrus' split from Liam Hemsworth. The pair had been in an on-and-off relationship for nearly a decade, but hung up the towel in August 2019 — less than a year after tying the knot. Cue: our dismal hopes about love existing in Hollywood part 1. After that, the music star embarked on a whip-fast, month-long romance with Brody Jenner's ex Kaitlynn Carter. After a trip to Italy and some light cohabitation, this short-lived couple also called it quits. Cue: our dismal hopes about love existing in Hollywood part 2. Then came Cody Simpson, the dreamy Australian singer that might just change our minds.

Cyrus and Simpson have been dancing around tabloid headlines ever since they were spotted sharing a kiss over breakfast in Los Angeles on Oct. 3, 2019. With their onslaught of social media PDA, it seems like these two are moving really, really fast ... but strangely enough, they actually aren't. They may already appear to be in it for the long haul, but there's a lot more to this couple than most of us realize. Here are some strange things about the Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus' long-lasting bond.

Miley Cyrus thought all men were 'evil' before dating Cody Simpson

Miley Cyrus somehow shaded both Liam Hemsworth and Kaitlynn Carter during an Instagram Live session with Cody Simpson, when she made some pretty unexpected claims about her sexuality. But let's back up a bit. In a 2015 interview with Elle, the former Disney starlet came out as both pansexual and gender fluid. She later told Vanity Fair that her marriage to Hemsworth was "redefining" what it looks like for a "queer person" to be in a "hetero relationship."

But just a few weeks into shacking up with Simpson, Cyrus expressed a very controversial opinion about the reason why she gravitated towards romantic relationships with women in the first place. In short: she thought men were "evil" and believes Simpson is the only good one she's ever met. "Don't give up. You don't have to be gay," Cyrus told her fans (via E! News). She added, "I always thought I had to be gay because I just thought, like, all guys were evil, but it's not true. There are good people out there that just happen to have d**ks. I've only ever met one ... and he's on this Live."

The singer-actress' comments, of course, angered the LGBTQ+ community. Cyrus later took to Twitter to clarify that she believes "you don't choose your sexuality" and was merely talking about "sucky guys." Honestly, it makes us wonder what Hemsworth could have possibly done to deserve such shade.

They got matching tattoos after two weeks together

Some might say getting a tattoo with someone you've only been dating for a couple weeks is really, really risky (lest us forget Johnny Depp's "Winona Forever" situation). In Cyrus' case, it's just Miley being Miley. Once you've got enough ink that reminds you of people who've scorned you, what's another?

According to Page Six, the "7 Things" hitmaker got inked with her Australian beau just two weeks into their budding relationship. Cyrus got a heart and dagger with the words "Rock 'N' Roll Heart," while Simpson got a skull and crossbones with a scythe. Okay, so they're not exactly matching, but they do clearly go together.

Cyrus is already a few tattoos ahead of the tiny Vegemite jar she got zapped to commemorate Hemsworth (which we suppose could now represent Simpson, as he's also Australian and you know Americans don't eat Vegemite). Page Six reports that she debuted a breakup tattoo during her 2019 MTV VMAs performance that had the Pixies lyrics: "My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free." Cyrus also got a tattoo to celebrate her headline-making Italy trip with Kaitlynn Carter during their month-long fling, and covered up the avocado tat on her arm with a rose, among others.

Cody Simpson has already met Miley Cyrus' parents

For most of us, bringing our significant other around our parents for the first time is absolutely nerve-wracking, but Miley Cyrus seems to have made a habit of introducing her partners to her mom almost immediately. As they say, mama knows best, and there's no point in wasting your time with someone who doesn't get along with the fam.

According to TMZ, Cyrus and Cody Simpson met up with Miley's mom Tish at a tiny, Los Angeles breakfast cafe less than two weeks after they were caught smooching over acai bowls. Of course, Simpson has been a friend of the Cyrus family for a long time. Since the pair has known each other for years, he's probably already met Tish — but the idea of being a couple is a whole new ballpark. It's like a total reintroduction, but he didn't seem to be sweating it.

As mentioned, this isn't the first time Cyrus has brought a love interest around her mother in the early stages of a relationship. TMZ reports that Kaitlynn Carter was spotted with Miley and Tish Cyrus in WeHo just a few days after photos of the divorcée duo locking lips in Italy started circling around the tabloids in mid-August 2019.

They secretly kissed years ago

Miley Cyrus' romance with Cody Simpson might seem like a total whirlwind (especially because we've come to expect that from the singer-actress), but they were actually vaguely involved a few years earlier. In truth, they had already secretly kissed long before any of us knew they were an item.

In an Instagram Live session captured by a fan, Cyrus and Simpson revealed that their first kiss was four or five years prior to getting together in the fall of 2019. The former Hannah Montana star couldn't exactly remember when or where it took place, but she thought maybe it was in a "dirty a** nightclub." Meanwhile, Simpson was certain it happened in 2016 at the Los Angeles club 1 Oak, but they both ended up admitting it was probably at her house.

Based on Cosmopolitan's timeline, this places the couple's first kiss sometime after Cyrus split from Liam Hemsworth during her rebellious Bangerz era and likely after she broke up with Patrick Schwarzenegger in 2015. It also might have happened at 1 Oak, even though they couldn't recall. Cyrus and Simpson were known to frequent the celeb hotspot and got into an Uber accident heading to the club in September 2015, according to TMZ. Perhaps their memories were a little bit shaken by the minor fender bender.

Miley Cyrus was never comfortable with being a wife

In July 2019, Miley Cyrus graced the cover of Elle and owned up to some truths about her marriage. As it turns out, the singer was never really comfortable in the role of wife — at least in the traditional sense. "I still am very sexually attracted to women," she said. "People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still f**king good, and I know that. I made a partner decision ... I definitely don't fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don't even like that word."

Previously, we got a couple hints that Cyrus maybe wasn't as into the idea of being locked down in holy matrimony as Hemsworth (beyond her song "Can't Be Tamed"). In 2016, she told Ellen DeGeneres that she didn't like her engagement ring, but wore it because Hemsworth loved her. Her free-spirited sentiment seemed to bleed into her later work, too. Cyrus revealed the lyrics to her song, "Never Be Me," in her 2019 Elle cover story, which literally admits, "If you're looking for faithful, that'll never be me. If you're looking for stable, that'll never be me."

Regardless, it doesn't seem like Cody Simpson is contemplating marriage any time soon. On Oct. 11, 2019, he told Us Weekly that it was "too early" to tell if Cyrus was "the one." You think?

Did they already move in together?

Miley Cyrus may or may not be checking off every box for a whirlwind Hollywood romance. Her Australian singer-songwriter boyfriend all but outright told fans that they'd already moved in together less than two weeks after they were first caught kissing. What could possibly go wrong?

According to an Instagram Story captured by Elle, Cody Simpson posted a photo of himself with the words "move in day" in mid-October 2019. Though no one actually confirmed that the photo was taken from Cyrus' house, it certainly seems like the couple spends all of their waking — and sleeping — hours together (at least if you're judging by their constant social media posts). It's also pretty typical for the "We Can't Stop" singer.

In early September 2019, People reported that Kaitlynn Carter had moved in with Cyrus before their month-long relationship fizzled out. Her suitcases out, Simpson's suitcases in. Cyrus' home is starting to seem a bit like a baggage claim conveyor belt, but it's not as wild as we might think. According to a statement from Simpson's manager, the couple's "friendship is long-standing and deeper than people realize."

Miley Cyrus was Cody Simpson's childhood crush

Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson share a four-year age gap, which led the singer-actress to proudly joke about being a "cougar" during their joint Instagram Live on Oct. 21, 2019. What we didn't know is that The Voice judge actually made Simpson's childhood dreams come true. In a 2012 interview with Fuse, the Masked Singer winner owned up to having a little crush on the "Malibu" singer.

"Miley Cyrus has always been my childhood celebrity crush," he admitted. "I knew all the words to her songs, I'm not gonna lie. I'm not ashamed about it at all. I was a big Miley Cyrus fan, and I think she will be forever the most dateable Disney star." At the time of the interview, Simpson was around 15 years old, and Hannah Montana had aired its last episode a year prior. Fast forward seven years and the Aussie singer is calling Cyrus "baby" in his Instagram Stories. It just goes to show you that sometimes the long game is absolutely worth it.

They found each other again after sobriety

Everyone knows Miley Cyrus used to have a passion for partying, and the Disney alum is well-aware of her reputation, which started taking shape around the infamous salvia incident of 2010. In a 2019 tweet, she admitted that her "biggest song to date" was about "dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom." God bless the messy Bangerz era Miley, the brave soul who twerked on Robin Thicke in a flesh-colored bodysuit. She was a national treasure with an absurdly long tongue, but that Miley can't come to the phone right now because she's dead

Today, the Miley that couldn't stop has stopped. In an October 2019 Instagram Live (via Hollywood Life), the singer admitted that she's "four months sober" and feels the best she's ever felt. This sober lifestyle is reportedly part of what brought her back to Cody Simpson. According to a source cited by the website, "Partying isn't a part of her life anymore, and Cody seems to be right in sync with her on that. Back in the old days, when they used to hang out, they'd be watching the sun come up together after a long night of partying. Now they're getting up together to do sunrise yoga." Simpson confirmed the same sentiment to People, saying, "[We] found each other again in a space where we're both not partying, working real hard, and it just keeps things healthy and it's good."

Cyrus and Simpson's little sisters are close friends

Cyrus and Simpson's lives were already connected before they decided to enter a romantic relationship. According to E! News, "their families have known each other for years," and it was always vaguely a matter of timing. The stars were frequently in different parts of the world and often dating other people. People reports that Simpson's list includes Gigi Hadid, Ali Lohan and possibly Kylie Jenner. He even told Entertainment Tonight that the former Disney star was becoming "a great mate" in 2014.

The following year, the Cyrus-Simpson family connection was more or less set in stone when both of the stars' little sisters — Noah Cyrus and Alli Simpson — appeared in an ad campaign for Mudd. Per E! News, Noah and Alli "became fast friends" partly because they were both stars-in-the-making with "successful older siblings" in the music biz. As of 2017, the two besties were still ultra close, as Alli told Billboard, "We always related on that front, and Miley and Cody are good friends, as well, so it was sort of a small world connection for us, which was awesome."

Clearly, Cyrus and Simpson's families are already intertwined, so a relationship may have seemed like a natural next step (even if it came in hot like a wrecking ball).

Cody Simpson has always been into older women

Cody Simpson has self-admittedly always been into older women. In a 2014 interview with People, the Australian singer revealed, "I'm a big fan when a girl is smarter than you. That's why I've been with older girls, 'cause I like intelligence." At the time, Simpson was 17 years old and had recently broken up with then-19-year-old Gigi Hadid.

Though Miley Cyrus and Simpson's four-year age gap doesn't really mean much in adulthood, there's still a pretty big difference between 22 and 26 years old. Think about it: if they weren't former child stars, Simpson would probably just be graduating college, while Cyrus would probably already be established in her career. This is actually sort of how it played out in real life: the former Disney star served as a mentor as the young Aussie singer navigated a career in the music industry.

While speaking with GQ in 2015, Simpson praised Cyrus for guiding him into adulthood — and no one would know more than the artist who went through such great lengths to distance herself from Hannah Montana that she probably sprained her tongue in the process. "Miley is one of my best friends and she helps with some of that transitional stuff –- trying to escape your childhood," he said. "She's super open-minded and I'm working on becoming more like that." Their relationship is pretty adorable when you put it that way.

Did Cyrus force Simpson to release a love song he wrote about her?

Cyrus didn't just help Simpson make the jump from child star to adult celebrity. Once they started dating, the Disney alum influenced his music career in a major way when she more or less forced him to release the song he had written about her.

According to Cosmopolitan, Cyrus finally admitted that Simpson was her boyfriend in an Instagram Story while she was in the hospital with tonsillitis on Oct. 9, 2019. He had written love song for her while she was recovering, and reportedly "arrived with roses and his guitar in hand" at her hospital bedside. There ain't no medicine like music, and his song apparently did the trick, as Cyrus gushed, "Suddenly I am feeling much better." Honestly, where can we get a boyfriend who sings to us in an Australian accent when we're sick?

After Simpson played Cyrus the song, she apparently liked it enough to encourage him to release it. Simpson later told reporters (via People), "I wrote her a song this week that she's pretty much forcing me to put out. She was like, 'If you don't put this **t out, I'm putting it out on your behalf for you. I'm getting your Spotify login and doing this s**t myself.'" Who doesn't love a supportive queen? Simpson later released "Golden Thing" on YouTube, and now we're crying.

Miley Cyrus has never 'dated' as an adult

Most of us have a tendency to date the same kind of people over and over again, but this relationship is actually really different for both Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson (barring the fact that Simpson is, in fact, Australian like her former beau). The "Slide Away" singer, who linked up with Simpson just two months after separating from her husband, had been with Liam Hemsworth for most of her adult life. In other words, she really never had to experience the world of dating (which anyone who's ever been on Tinder would argue is a huge blessing) and urged her fans to "get used to me dating" after her acai bowl kiss with Simpson hit headlines in early October 2019.

"This 'dating' thing is new to me too. I've never been an 'adult' / grown a** woman experiencing this," Cyrus later tweeted out in a lengthy text-post. She added, "I was in a committed relationship for almost All my teens and early 20s; with the exception of a few breaks, which usually in those times I was working my a** off with not much R&R ... and 'meeting/trusting' people in my position is really tuff."

Simpson is also experiencing a relationship first: dating one of this friends. He told People that all of his prior relationships have been immediate romance, adding, "It's a different experience having been friends with somebody before and it developing naturally into something more."
