What happened between Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett?
Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett never officially confirmed they were dating, but did hint at a possible romance on social media. Per Us Weekly, the apparent former couple were first linked in June 2020 after they were seen together at a Los Angeles Black Lives Matter protest.
In October 2020, they did nothing to dispel the dating rumors when they took to TikTok to show off their matching Halloween costumes. In videos that are still available on their accounts as of March 18, 2021, the two showed off their Sharkboy and Lavagirl costumes. Bassett captioned his, "dream a dream u little bleep #sharkboyandlavagirl @sabrinacarpenter," while Carpenter wrote, "official audition tape for #sharkboyandlavagirl 2 @joshuatbassett." The videos have been viewed millions of times, and as reported by Just Jared, sparked a frenzy among friends that they were dating. However, neither publicly confirmed if they were anything more than just friends.
In January 2021, Bassett took to Instagram Stories to congratulate Carpenter on the release of her single "Skin." He wrote, per Us Weekly, "Been stuck in my head since I heard it. Congratulations @sabrinacarpenter on 'Skin,' the new label, & all that's to come."
Sabrina Carpenter's reported romance with Joshua Bassett hit the headlines thanks to Olivia Rodrigo
Despite some speculation, Sabrina Carpenter's apparent relationship with Joshua Bassett mainly stayed under the radar until his High School Musical: The Musical — The Series co-star Olivia Rodrigo dropped her viral hit "Drivers License" in January 2021. Per Us Weekly, the breakup song's lyrics had fans speculating she was singing about a feud with Carpenter over her supposed relationship with Bassett. Rodrigo appeared to allude to dating him before Carpenter and voiced her upset over him moving on.
Fans speculated that Rodrigo and Bassett dated in early 2020 and Bassett then began dating Carpenter in June 2020, using his July 2020 song "Anyone Else" as apparent proof. Per Broadway World, Bassett confirmed the song was about falling in love with a friend who was dating someone else, which many assumed was Carpenter. A week after Rodrigo released "Drivers License," Bassett added fuel to the fire by releasing "Lie, Lie, Lie," which appeared to be a response to the viral hit. He wrote in an Instagram Story (via Capital FM) that it was written after he discovered he'd been lied to by a friend and suggested he'd been thrown "under the bus" to benefit someone else.
Carpenter appeared to tell her side of the story in her song "Skin." Per Us Weekly, she suggested she and another woman could have been "friends" and sings, "Don't drive yourself insane," which appeared to be a nod to "Drivers License."
Sabrina Carpenter and Bradley Steven Perry made things Instagram official
Back in 2015, a few years before the "Drivers License" drama, Sabrina Carpenter and Bradley Steven Perry didn't hide their romance. According to Seventeen, they went Instagram official in May 2015 when Perry shared a photo of the two together and wrote in the caption, "We're a very mature couple (ft. Winnie the Poohs honey pot)." The snap appears to have been deleted and things seemingly went sour for the former couple after they split in August 2015.
Seventeen reported that their split was hinted at on social media with Perry favoriting some shady tweets about jealousy. One included a meme that read, "Guys don't get jealous because we don't trust you. Guys get jealous because we know exactly what the other guy is trying to do." He also shared a screenshot to Twitter showing he was listening to Taylor Swift's breakup song "Back To December," after which Twitter users noticed Carpenter's dad had unfollowed him on Twitter and Instagram, which pretty much confirmed their split.
Who else has Sabrina Carpenter dated?
Sabrina Carpenter was also romantically linked to her Tall Girl co-star Griffin Gluck in October 2019. The duo appeared to confirm they were an item when Gluck posted a snap to Instagram that showed them in the ultimate couple's costume as they recreated Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake's iconic all-denim ensembles from the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. "Britney and justin but make it spooky (before the pouring rain)," he captioned it.
In January 2020, Gluck was spotted in a series of photos Carpenter posted to Instagram from her night at the Golden Globes, including one very couple-y photo that showed them smiling and looking into one another's eyes while all dressed up. It's thought the former couple split sometime before her reported romance with Joshua Bassett, suggesting her relationship with Gluck may have been the one he sang about in "Anything Else."
Carpenter was also rumored to have dated her Girl Meets World co-star Corey Fogelmanis, but she shut down speculation their romance was anything other than platonic in an August 2019 Instagram upload. She shared a photo of herself sitting in front of him with their arms wrapped around each other as she acknowledged his 20th birthday. While the snap definitely looked very cozy, she shut down the dating talk by writing in the caption her relationship with Fogelmanis was "the sweetest most platonic relationship in my life."
Sabrina Carpenter had been keeping Barry Keoghan a secret
Going off of rumors alone, Sabrina Carpenter and actor Barry Keoghan have been unofficially a couple since 2023. The duo did have to make it official when Keoghan was in Carpenter's music video for her hit "Please Please Please," released in summer of 2024. However, it seems the couple had been swirling around each other for months leading up to their public debut. Having allegedly first met at Paris Fashion Week in September of 2023, Carpenter and Keoghan started a whirlwind romance that has left fans with a sense of on-again-off-again whiplash.
Keoghan publicly split from his ex, Alyson Kierans, with who he shares a son, back in July 2023, and it was around this time that he started appearing on Carpenter's social media feed. However, whenever any interviewer would ask either Carpenter or Keoghan to divulge who they were seeing, both avoided the question. There were rumors the couple broke up in August of 2024, with Carpenter giving an interview to The Guardian in which she dodged even mentioning Keoghan. When asked what it was like to work with him on "Please Please Please," Carpenter said it was "one of the best experiences I've ever had. I'm very honored and I got to work with such a great actor!"
The breakup rumors seem to have been squashed by November 2024, when Carpenter received multiple Grammy nominations. On the "The Jess Cagle Show," Keoghan said, "I don't know anyone who works as hard [as Sabrina]. I'm in awe of her, watching her work and...the standards that she sets, you know, especially being on that, that music video." It seems Keoghan is still keen to keep her in his orbit.
